DGL 4500 Keeps Rebooting
« on: July 20, 2010, 06:13:35 PM »

My router keeps on rebooting, I really don't know why, I have been using this firmware since it's release date, but last week it started with the problems.
I have acquired a new laptop, a Sony Vaio Z, which has 802.11n, and I have been using it.
I have normal torrent usage and it seems that my router only reboots when torrent is running, don't know why!
I have also acquired a new wireless phone that works on the 2.4Ghz spectrum, but idk if that is what is causing the problem.
In the moment, I have the connected the PS3, a NAS and my home server connected with the cable. Maybe 3 or 4 laptops on wireless.
My settings are as follows:

Wireless LAN

 Wireless Radio :  Enabled

802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b

Channel Width : 40MHz

Channel : 4

Secondary Channel : 8

WISH : Active

Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Configured

Guest Wi-Fi Protected Setup : Enabled/Not Configured
SSID List
   Security Mode
   WPA/WPA2 - Personal

Any ideas/solutions to my problem?
Thankfully,

I presume that your are using v1.22NA fw?

How about using G and N only? Are there any devices that are using B mode? If not I would limit the modes to just those that can use the highest modes possible.

Do you use WISH?

If your not using WiFi protested setup or have any devices that have this option you can disable that.
How about disable SHORT GI in Advanced WiFi?

Let us know.

turn off the logging for a couple of days...  It is the only thing that was causing my system to reboot.

"Short GI
Using a short (400ns) guard interval can increase throughput. However, it can also increase error rate in some installations, due to increased sensitivity to radio-frequency reflections. Select the option that works best for your installation."

It basically increases the amount of time the antenna monitors the wireless signal after the signal "ends". Helps when there is wireless noise or echo.

my router is doing the exact same thing. We recently moved and previously I was on Charter now I am on Comcast. I am also heavily depending on Wi-Fi where at my previous house this was not the case. I am going to eventually wire this place but at the moment that is not an option.

This router has now reset itself about 10 times in the last 15 minutes.

at the previous location I can't recall the router ever rebooting unless there was a problem with the service.

Running version 1.22NA firmware.

all logging is turned off.

Short GI is off

WISH is disabled.

I have two new Samsung smart TV's that won't work unless I move to 5GHz band. If I do that nothing else works.

Very frustrating.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz or single mode N on 5Ghz? Does it reboot while using 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhzor 40Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

will hit you up with that information as soon as possible Furry. I will for the time being get you the hardware version and any other pertinent information that I can quickly access.

Anything else may take me a couple of days as we just moved and I have to get my fairly large saltwater aquarium moved on saturday and that is going to be one difficult job.

Please continue to check back as I will definitely be getting the info posted as this is driving me crazy. This has been such a good trouble free router up until I moved and hooked it up onto comcast.

I can tell you this. Everything on my network uses a static IP. I wrote down all items we commonly use and assigned them a static IP. Only friends coming over with their phones, tablets etc will be given a DHCP based number. I have had issues with every router I have ever used when it comes to DHCP so I prefer static addresses which always seem to work for me.

Have fun moving the aquarium.  ::)

When you say static IP, do you mean inputting addresses on each device or using the router to reserve the IP addresses for devices? I prefer to let the router handle the IP addressing and reservations as thats what it's designed to do. However if static on the devices is working for you then thats fine too.

I think the router might be rebooting due to wireless problems. One test you can try, turn OFF the wireless radio for a while and see if you notice the router reboot. Turn on Logging and clear it and then let it run. This will help narrow down where the issue might be. I could be a wired connection too however if you didn't notice this before until you moved, then I still feel it's wireless and environment related.

Keep us posted.

Yeah broken coral and stressed fish are in my immediate future.  :)

I think so as well (about wireless being the culprit). As I said before I really didn't rely on wireless at my old house. The house was wired and I only used wireless to connect my iPhone and my wifes iPad and our Wii.

so every now and again wireless would get hit and everything else was wired. Never any issues.

Funny thing is I found this thread so I went back in and made sure Short GI and WISH were disabled. Everything was steady as can be. Until last night when the router rebooted every two minutes over the course of about 30 minutes.

Is it possible that the service itself (Comcast) is causing the issue.

I will also add I can detect probably about 15 other wireless networks where at my old house mine was the only one I picked up.

Whew. What a headache.
