Has anyone set up their "system" so that what is on the DVR can be uploaded elsewhere periodically as a backup. I mean if a thug came to your business and took off with the HDD then you would be in deep doo doo. So am wondering about a precaution whereby the video is secured offsite. Am looking for a free or low cost solution ie maybe upload to DropBox or some other free or low cost cloud service? How to implement this?

I wouldn't even begin to imagine costs of full recordings.
I do have my cameras set up to upload video files on motion detection. That's at least some guarantee of catching some image.
For local, you could get an iusbport2 for an ftp server. You could hide it pretty much any where you have power.
