DWA-192: Awful connection to network
« on: July 31, 2018, 06:08:14 AM »

I have a DWA-192 that I got earlier this year. I've been trying to use it to connect to my router, which is a Netgear N150 WNR v3 router, on a Surfboard SB6121 modem. The router/modem setup is totally fine and other devices connect fine.

However, it mostly refuses to connect - I can see the network, and type in the password, but then it either says it can't connect or it barely connects. If it connects, it gets horrible reception - 80-100 ms ping, and often having spikes in connectivity. I have a Linksys USB adapter that gets significantly better performance than this.

I've tried installing multiple drivers, including the ones from the box and the two most recent, but all have failed to improve things. I have Windows 10 home, and it did work decently well when I was at my old place, with a different router.

Is there any fix to this?  Are there tests I can run to try and figure things out?

A quick Google serach showed me that the Netgear router has troubles connecting or is working at low speed. It is an old router, by the way.
I think you must search for the solution at the router, especially while you had no trouble with another router. Try f.i. to update to the latest firmware there.

For the DWA-192 you definitely need the latest driver version, which the best compatible and stable. First uninstall the old river and then the newest.

For the N150 firmware, you can look here (if that's your router, otherwise specify the exact type from the sticker) :
https://www.netgear.com/support/product/WNR1000v3.aspx#Firmware%20Version%201.0.2.72%20(North%20America)

Remember to connect your router wired when updating firmware. Older Netgear routers are known to brick when updated wirelessly.

Success.

Does the DWA work with other wifi routers? This adapter would work better with a newer generation router.
