Title: DIR-868L OpenDNS not working
Post by: derno on April 17, 2014, 03:16:45 PM
I have a pretty vanilla setup and just can't get OpenDNS to work.  Here is what I have tried thus far...

I have seen several posts referring to OpenDNS issues on other devices and followed many of the steps (resetting and removing MyDlink registration, setting configs one at a time, etc) but none have worked.

I have searched the Comcast forums and the only posts with this issue were resolved by silly changes like a different ethernet cable... which I find to be useless (although I changed the cables just for kicks  :) )

I am still working with OpenDNS to test several scenarios, but it appears more and more to be an issue with the 868L, so I decided to post for help here since I want to use their web filtering on all devices in the house.

I just replaced an old WBR-1310 with the 868L (which, BTW was a HUGE upgrade in performance, stopped dropping of iDevices and other issues!!).  I had configured my primary and secondary DNS to use OpenDNS on the WBR-1310 with no issues, functioning for over 9 months.  When I do the same on the 868L... nothing happens.

I have been able to manually configure the LAN connection on my desktop to use OpenDNS primary and secondary and all is well - on that computer; but obviously not for others as the router would do.

I am in Atlanta and use Comcast, and I think the manual test above as well as the fact that the previous WBR-1310 worked fine eliminate them as the source of the issue.

Would love any other thoughts on what to try.

Also, I see lots of references to "parental controls" for the 868L, but I don't see any menu item for it at all... just all the advanced options to painstakingly and manually configure... which is what OpenDNS does so well already.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

Is there a problem with using Chrome to manage the router? (curious about your red text)

Here are the answers:

ISP Stuff

Configs to try - as I said earlier, I am pretty vanilla from the default, so I didn't change much outside the initial wizard...

THAT FINALLY SEEMS TO HAVE DONE IT!!!!

For those reading this in the future... Disabling DNSRelay (which was on by default) seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks so much for your help!! I will see if I can re-enable the MyDlink service again, and then I get to setup my 2nd 868L in bridge mode... so you may see me in another post if I have issues there  ;)

Awesome, glad it working.

Ya, Chrome isn't recommended for doing any FW updates.

Ya, I've got a buddy with 2 868Ls, one in bridge mode. Works great.

Enjoy.  ;)
