Latest firmware + SMB vs AFP
« on: July 31, 2011, 03:55:21 AM »

Hi all,

I have been reading tons of pages on this forum before posting, but I am still confused about something.
I have one 323 unit which I haven't used for ages due to the very poor performance and problems I had with iPhoto libraries and other types of files, and have been planning for a while to sell that unit on ebay since I wasn't using it.

But I recently decided to keep it and try to "fix" any problems I still have, so I can use the TimeCapsule for backups only (I am on Mac).

So as first step I just upgraded, right now, to the latest firmware I can find on the D-Link website (http://www.dlink.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c=TechSupport_C&childpagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLTechProduct&cid=1197319419183&p=1197318962293&packedargs=QuickLinksParentID%3D1197319419183%26locale%3D1195806691854%26packedargs%3Df9ffeaf4e83ab6d0166b8cc93b23ebbc3d83540f46ceb58f26706558f9479c4ec3df1411a95e2d40b8161bf516969212f4b253493c501653965d4b39148b4c34&pagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLWrapper).

The latest version listed there, which I have installed, is the 1.08.

However, in several discussions on these forums I have read about 1.09 and even 1.10 (although beta, I think) versions of the firmware. Where can I find them? Why aren't they listed on the D-Link website?
Would any of these later releases have any advantages over the 1.08 which I have installed?

My main priority is to improve the performance of the drive and eliminate some weird issues with some types of files, such as the iPhoto libraries. As said I am on Mac, so another thing that I was wondering and about which I am still confused even after reading several discussions, is: for Mac users, which is best between SMB and AFP?

I haven't used any ff_plug or whatever it is called yet, but I will try if it can bring improvements to my unit.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Version 1.10 beta (which I haven't tried yet) can be found here:
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns323/Beta/Firmware/

Version 1.09 (which I have installed on two of my DNS-323's) can be found here:
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns323/Firmware/dns323_fw_109.zip

Sorry, I can't help with your SMB/AFP question.

Scott,

thank you. I upgraded the firmware etc but after a few attempts to solve some issues, I got into a new problem...
