Fan never Stop at 87°F / 31°C
« on: October 13, 2009, 09:55:07 PM »

Hello,

recently bought a DNS-323 With two Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TO  (Ref provided in status page : WD15EADS-00P8B0).

The issue is that the fan never spin down.
I tried the fanctl from the fun_plug doesn't fix it
Tried to reformat==> doesn't fix it
Tried to reflash in 1.07 ==> doesn't fix it
Try to flash in 1.08beta5 ==> doesn't fix it
Try to install again the funplug ffp without fanctrl ==> no change.

The temperature is :
  + on web console : System Temperature:       87°F / 31°C
  + using command line :  temperature g 0  ==> <temperaturertc>: get temperature = 87
  + using fun_plug : dns323-temp 31 C  87 F

All post seams to let believe that fan should be off at such a temperature.

And fan command :
/ # fanspeed g
0
/ # dns323-fan v
program_speed=7021
actual_speed=0
status=2
/ # dns323-fan s 1935
1935 0 2
/ # dns323-fan v
program_speed=1935
actual_speed=0
status=2
======
But to be honest no matter what i do the noise remains the same, and fan is on, meaning i seams not to have any control on the fan.

If you have any idea i'll be interested, has this is really noisy and anoying.
thanks
y.

What did you set the fan options at?  I found that Auto off/low/high didn't work properly for me, but Auto low/high runs fine.  The fan is still running, but it's very slow and quiet.  I'm running 1.08 beta5.

There was another post that mentioned setting the fan to one of the options, then setting it again to the desired option would get it working properly, you might try that.

A the moment i'm auto/off/low High, also saw and tried already the proposal in other post to change and switch and reboot....
Wasn't successful.

The strangest bit is that for a reason i can't know, the fan has just stopped.
Only element being :
  ° move the NAS from back of computer to the router ( but i tried it in the past and was still running)
  ° did download the the funplug packages on the disk + update + install of smartmon
  ° runned the smarctl command but just to get values not to change anything.

And then fan sudently stopped.
Makes a week i have been investigating, so so far i'm not gona try additionnal steps/combinaison and configuration.
Just  describing what happen in case of any use or help to others

Hi there,

I'm having the same problem. Running FW 1.08b5 and latest funplug.

Past couple of days my fan doesnt change rpm. just at highest. tried suggestions like laying off the off/low/high setting and instead using the low/high setting. to no avail.

When i go to status tab and read my log well.. I guess there is something strange and might be the culprit.

It states that i need to check the fan because it can't start. Like i stated the fan is running at highest rpm but the nas doesnt detect a running fan..

any ideas? i tried flashing back to 1.07 factory defaults and shutting down the NAS instead of just restarting it. now back to 1.08b5 again... damn thing won't spin down. temps are steady between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius

I'd have to believe that in your case, you have a hardware issue.  Clearly, either the fan tach isn't sending the pulses, or the fan controller isn't receiving them.

Hmm finally unsure that issue is really fixed.

I have in the log the following line :
   fan can't rotate, check it please.

If i blow on the fan it turning so it's not physically blocked

Anyone have ever seen this message

Sounds like a similar issue as the previous poster, broken hardware.

When I purchased my DNS-323 and brought it online, the fan didn't run at all.  Using firmware v.1.07, there was nothing in the documentation to tell me if the fan might be temperature controlled or if it should run constantly.  I called D-Link tech support (yeah, I know) and was told I definitely had a hardware problem, that the fan should be running.  I asked about a possible temperature controller, and was told no, the fan should be running.  I swapped for a new box.  The new box did the same thing.  I called again, was told the same thing, got a third box, and the fan ran!  I got too busy to pay attention for a good while, but the fan isn't running now.

So I have questions:

Is the box supposed to have a temp. variable fan as default, and is there any way to change it using only the 1.07 firmware (no fun_plug)?

And is D-Link tech support really so bad that they would have you keep sending boxes back because they don't know how the machine operates?

Thank you!

I have an older unit that I've had for some time.  The fan appears to be temperature controlled, when I access it heavily for some time, the fan does kick in gear.

The new firmware also has settings for the fan, some folks have had issues with the Auto (off,low,high) setting and I currently use the Auto (low,high) setting on mine.

Are you saying that FW 1.07 has user controlled settings?  If so, any idea where?

No, I'm saying that they exist in 1.08b5, that's the first place I used them.

Tools, Power Management, Fan Control.  Pick the mode from the drop down menu.

Make sure you click on save settings after making the changes.

Always a good idea if you want them to be effective.  ;)

Sorry for the slow response - busy week!

Before upgrading to FW 1.08* I'm going to play with how the box works under 1.07.  That is, I'm going to experiment with some temperature swings and also try a real workout of the hard drives.  I'd like to know if the 1.07 really did have automatic fan control even if it wasn't user controllable.

This will take me some time because I have so little to spare for these things.  I'll post back here with the results.

Thank you!
