Slow Wireless on DGL-4500
« on: January 07, 2011, 10:36:49 AM »

I just received a new DGL-4500 router.  I was replacing an older DIR-655 router that I was having issues with as well.

On the new router, the Ethernet ports work fine with my Comcast cable service.  I basically get the same speed connected directly to the modem or through the Ethernet port on the DGL-4500 router (~20MB down, 3MB up testing using www.speedtest.net).  When I try to connect through the Wireless with my Lennova T-410 laptop, I get a very slow wireless speed to the point that the Internet is unusable.  If I reset the router, I get a fast speed for about a minute and then the wireless gets very slow.  I have to continually reset the router.

I have read the forums and tried different things to potentially fix it but nothing seems to work.  I have set the router to Wireless N only.  All the devices I have that connect to it are Wireless N devices.  All of them get very slow speeds.  I have the following devices connected through Wireless: HP Desktop 600XT, HP C309N printer, 2 iPhone 4, 2 iPads, and 2 DAP-1522 Wireless bridges.  All the other devices that I have that connect (e.g. XBOX360, PS3, Wii, Slingbox) are all connected through the Ethernet ports or the 2 wireless N bridges.

The other settings I changed based on the forums are below:
-Changed Beacon Period to 50 (from default of 100)
-Short GI - deselected this setting (supposedly could help if RF interference problems)
-Changed from WPA2 (TKIP and AES) Cipher to just WPA2 (AES)
-Using 802.11N only mode
-Turned off WISH

I have talked with DLINK technical support, but they are really no help.  They told me to downgrade the firmware from 1.23NA (I had upgrade from 1.21).  I downgraded to 1.22 with no difference.  I have since put it back to 1.23NA. They also said to set it to a specific channel like 9.  I did that instead of the default Auto CHannel Scan.  I have changed that back to the default again.

I am also using the 2.4GHz band.

If you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.  The technical support said it is probably a fault router.  I don't know if it is or not.  I will plan to return it, but I fear I might have the same issues.

Are there any other WiFi routers in the area? Any cordless house phones? Try G mode only at 2.4Ghz? Are the drivers for the supported wireless devices up to date for those that need drivers? How far are you from the router when using WiFi? I would turn OFF ALL wireless devices, then using one device, i.e. laptop, connect and check the speeds for the laptop. You got a lot of WiFi going on there...wondering if something is bogging down the WiFi when there all connected and going. Try one at a time. Let us know.

I started doing a few things you suggested.  I shut off all the devices except my laptop.  As soon as I did that, the wireless speed went back up and has been stable.  I have slowly been turning on 1 device at a time and waiting for a period to see if the network remains stable.  So far so good.  I have the main devices (i.e. laptop, desktop, wireless printer and 1 bridge for wireless multi-function printer).  I will continue to monitor it and see if 1 of the devices causes any issues.

As far as interference, there really aren't any other wireless networks around me.  Additionally I have a DECT6.0 phone system, so it isn't affecting the 2.4GHz space. No other 2.4GHz devices that I am aware of.

Thanks for the suggestion on trying to figure this out.  I will keep you posted.

The Wireless network is still stable as of this morning.  I have all the devices on the network at this point.  The frustration is just not really knowing which device potentially was causing this issue.  Thanks again for the suggestion which definitely helped.  I was ready to send this router back.  It is now really fast.

I think you'll like the router. Just keep an eye on it and see who all is online all that the same time and take notice if you see a slow down. Might have been something that just intermittently clogged the pipes. LOL. At least you know how to stop everything and bring it back up should it happen again.

So I think I figured out the problem.  One of my computers had Vuze running on it.  The upload settings were the originally on the program which causes Vuze to take all of the download and upload bandwidth.  I guess that if you don't throttle the upload settings back, you can't even load webpages.  I found this on another forum that Vuze can slow down wireless networks because of this.  I shut it down and have had no lag on the wireless network fully loaded with all of my devices including the 2 iPads, and 2 iPhones.  I seperately had thought those could be the issue because of all the WIFI issues associated with the apple products.  But it doesn't seem to be them at all.

Thanks again for your help to isoloate the issue.  The router is definitely pretty cool.  I can't wait to run XBOX LIVE.  I had some serious lag issues which is why I switched to this one.

Good to hear man.

Ya, review the sticky for xbox. Even though it's not 100% lag proof, it will help make sure your system is running streamlined as it can be. Lag happens at other places and still effects everyone regardless.

Enjoy.
