Author Topic: Router blocking university sites (despite access control being turned off)  (Read 5747 times)

Hey guys.

So I can't seem to access ANY site related to my university (www.concordia.ca) anymore from my home network. I know for a fact that it's not a problem with their sites, as I can access them just fine if I use my phone network and from my laptop when I'm at the campus. It's also not an issue with my ISP (videotron, even talked to a tech today who assured me it was a router problem), when I eliminated my connection from the DIR 655 and tried to connect to the internet directly from the ISP modem, everything worked just fine that way.

I've tried to visit www.concordia.ca or any of its' sister sites from my desktop, my laptop, my iTouch, even my ps3, I've also tried cross-browsing to no avail. I've checked the router page, apparently my Hardware Version is B1 and my Firmware Version is 2.00NA. Access Control is unchecked and there are no sites at all listed under Website Filter. I've also tried resetting using the reset-hole and also by pulling off the power chord. Also did a factory-reset from the router page, the problem persists despite all of that.

Every other site works just fine, it's just my university site that refuses to load up. I've browsed the last 7-8 pages of this forum, this doesn't seem to be a common problem based on that little sample. So what gives exactly? I used to be able to visit those sites just fine prior to few days ago.

Factory reset the router?
What browser are you using? Try a different browser like Opera or FF? Same thing?

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
If DSL and using PPPoE option on the router, ensure that the ALWAYS ON option is selected, and not the On Demand option.

Some things to try:
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Thanks for posting FurryNutz.

If by factory reset you mean tools>system>restore factory defaults, I did try that as I mentioned on my post.

I've tried firefox, chrome, internet explorer and of course Safari on Itouch. Yes, same thing unfortunately.

As for the ISP modem, it is a Motorolla Surfboard Cable Modem (SB6120)
http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Cable-Modems-and-Gateways/SURFboard-Cable-Modem-SB6120-US-EN

I believe that is a stand alone modem? I'm not sure, you could probably tell me better.

I have had that modem operating with my dir-655 for about a year and a half now, I've virtually had zero problem ever since I set everything up. Even right now, everything works flawlessly except for me being unable to access my university affiliated sites. Which is kind of a big issue considering I need to access it fairly regularly to keep up to date on my academics.

Advanced dns service is turned off (unchecked).
DNS Relay is turned on (checked).
Most of my devices seem to already have reserved ip addresses under setup/networking. I'm only not seeing the ps3 on there, surely that's not what's causing this issue? I'll add it to the list regardless.
Do you mean the obtain ip address that can be found at Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections > right click > Internet protocol version 4/and/or/6? If so they're all checked on obtain it automatically.
I'm not sure how to set the firewall to what you suggested, but I've tried turning it off completely, no luck. And like I've said, I can access the sites no problem if use my modem directly to connect to internet, even if firewalls/anti-virus protection are turned on. It's just when the dir 655 is used this problem rises.

Here's what it says if I try it on Chrome:

Quote
This webpage is not available
Google Chrome could not load the webpage because myconcordia.ca took too long to respond. The website may be down, or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.
Here are some suggestions:
Reload this webpage later.
Check your Internet connection. Restart any router, modem, or other network devices you may be using.
Add Google Chrome as a permitted program in your firewall's or antivirus software's settings. If it is already a permitted program, try deleting it from the list of permitted programs and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server, adjust your proxy settings: Go to the wrench menu > Options > Under the Hood > Change proxy settings... > LAN Settings and deselect the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" checkbox.

^And yes I did try chrome's suggestion too to no avail.

Any other ideas guys?

Update FW and follow the FW Update Sticky.

I'm afraid I just made it bad to worse.

So I followed the FW update sticky like you told me to and updated the firmware to 2.03 B. Since then all I've been getting is an orange power light (which blinks occasionally if I try to reset the modem). I can't access the router page (192.168.0.1).

I then tried to follow the other sticky thread labelled "FYI: DIR-655 RevB NA Firmware Recovery and Tips". But after browsing to the bin file, selecting it and clicking on send, I get the error "Incorrect hardware ID Image, please check". Screenshots (zoom in with ctrl+)

Is my device bricked? I get nothing beside the orange light.

You get any blue light when you're wired to the router?

You mean the 4 dsl/lan cable lights? Yeah I get the blue light if I wire it to the computer or modem. But isn't that irrelevant considering the power light stays orange no matter what?

I also got a DIR 645 today for the time being. Will probably end up returning it if there's no fix for my 655.
Any comparison threads between these two? Would the 645 be a good upgrade?

Might have been a bad unit from the get go. See you on the 645 forum.

Disconnect the power from the dir655.  Wait few minutes and reconnect the power back.  While reconnect the power back, press and hold the reset button at the back of the router dir-655 for few minutes to reset the router.  Good luck!
