Unhappy with Router
« on: August 24, 2012, 05:21:40 AM »

I very unhappy with this router. It gets super hot and then the wifi and internet just dies. I have 1.02  firmware installed. My ISP is Charter 100mbs download and 5mbs upload . I bought it because it said it can run everything you have in your house and it fails badly. 5ghz never works for my 3 Xbox 360's . Why did they make it so you can't stand it up so it can run cooler  D-link need to show some pride and fix the issues with router please !!!! >:( :'( :o

I really think it is hardware issue or a firmware issue for sure because it gets burning hot for no reason.

I got the router running great ! How you ask going to Walmart !?!

I said I need cooling for the router so I went to Walmart looking for a fan. I found a plastic fan that can run on batteries or plug . I modded the fan to just run on a plug. The router stays nice and cool and never reboots. I was not going to eat almost $200 for router that is brand new. I never had problems with heat with my D-Link DGL -4500 router that was in the same spot.

Here are the pictures on how it looks !

Lets get some information from you before we post in the forum Bugs and Requests. We need to determine if your router needs some configuration and troubleshooting first.

BTW, the reason why 360's don't work on 5Ghz is because they don't support 5Ghz. The only way they will connect to 5Ghz is if you are using a external 5Ghz USB or LAN WiFi adapter. Then they should work on 5Ghz. Mine does.

You need to review this for XBL:
Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL.

Lets gather some info and see if we can help you get yoru 857 going better for you. Please answer as best as you can some of the highlighted questions below and give some of the suggestions a try as well. The more information and feedback you can give us, the better we can help you.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone here can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure. We;ve help many people with there routers using this. Works well. I might suggest you give this option a try.

These router do run hotter that older generation routers. This is due to the newer CPUs they are using. This is normal and they work well, there is a heat vent on top that helps dissipate the heat. This is by design. If your absolutely bothered by the heat, find you a small fan to use on it if you really need to.

Any status on this?

This will probably be considered a user configuration issue thats not related to the router.  ::)

Because you started a post and there was a response on that thread that you need to help provide some answers so we can better understand your problems and help provide better feedback and suggestions. If your not willing to answer some of the questions, we can't get an idea of what is going on and help you trouble shoot this. If this is the case then you'll need to contact DLink support directly if your un-willnig to provide answers to the questions presented. Good luck.

What was the fix?

Based on when the "Subject" changed (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50533.msg187294#msg187294) it looks like the proposed fix was an external fan, but that apparently didn't work.

Whats your room and ambient temperatures like?

Do you realize that the CPUs are much different between the 4500 and 857. The 857 does run hotter.

Glad you found a solution.

Thanks ! I think when they release Ver. 2 they need to think about cooling for sure. Since I got the fan it never reboots or gets hot anymore. It's working great !

Never had been using any cooling on mine. I would presume what ever your environment is could be effecting yours.
