rougter give me a different ip that it is supposed to

A few days ago I was trying to send an e-mail. When I tried to send I got an error saying that it was unable to detect the server (I was using a program like outlook express). I figured I just had to forward some ports and it would work. At the time I didn't have time to find out what port it used and then forward it so I hooked my computer up directly to the modem. After sending the e-mail I hooked my router back up and when trying to log into http://192.168.0.1 I got a Network Timeout error. I then went to check what the routers ip it was 70.67.248.1 and wen I try to connect to that I get a Failed to Connect error. My internet works find I just need to forward some ports so my applications run properly.

Hey Evan,

Well if your computer continues to get a public IP address (70.x.x.x) then let's look at a few things. As you may or may not know, you should be getting a 192.168.0.x IP address from the router (be default).

Firstly, make sure the modem is connected to the WAN port and not one of the others. The modem would pass the public IP through if is wasn't in the correct port on the router.

Secondly, I've had this issue on a couple of occasions and the fix was different for them both if I remember correctly. You can set a static IP on your NIC if you're still getting the 70.x.x.x number to: 192.168.0.90 with a default gateway of 192.168.0.1. You should be able to login to the router page when you do. If not, a reset on the router is most likely required (Hold the reset button for 10 seconds using a paper clip/pin/etc). After the reset, the router should automatically issue your computer a 192.168.0.x number. Of course, remember to remove the static IP if you wish to verify the DHCP server in the router is properly sending your computer a private IP automatically.

yes if I set up a static IP with my routers IP I can connect to the routers page, but my internet doesn't work.

Here is what my network looks like without a static IP.
I am unable to connect to the router if I put 70.67.248.1 in the address bar.

If you're able to login to the configuraton page after setting an IP; great. What does the WAN IP address say under the WAN section? If it's all 0's then you must clone the MAC address (Setup Tab, Internet link on the left, Manual configure button). After you clone the MAC address, power cycle the modem and router. You also need to set a static DNS server as well on your MAC. You can use 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1. You should be able to access the internet after these steps.

That's normal dude. That IP address is the public IP address shaw is giving you. It has no configuration page.

Although, your router is not performing as it should. Setting the static IP/DNS information is only a fix. Have you tried resetting the router yet? The router should be giving your MAC the 192.x.x.x number without having a static IP on it.

It just REALLY looks like the modem is plugged in a LAN port...
