Why is the stream not steady?
« on: January 17, 2016, 12:33:08 PM »

Why is it so intermittent? When I have steady activity on something you look at the feed and it's constantly up a few megs then all the way down. Why do I not get a steady stream to say even my hardwired items?

What do you mean by "steady stream"? You didn't give any technical details on your issue.

It would be helpful to know what your ISP model Mfr and model is next time as this plays a critical roll in troubleshooting.
QoS is for the uplink only, not the downlink like everyone assumes.

Good Luck

Ok. I have the same modem, good solid modem. ALL Motorola SB 6 series are good modems. I'm concerned with newer generation modems since Arris bought there cable modem division.  :-\

Yea, seen that about Arris which means I'll use this till it dies or docsis changes. Mainly PC gamer, but do play some on Xbone. I suck at shooters with a controller, not natural to me.

Ok, I play both, mainly first person shooter on XB and rollplay on PC.

I recommend trying the 868 or 866. They have what you seek as far as configuring QoS.

I'm using a Motorola Surfboard SB6121 on Time Warner Cable.

SB6121 is a good modem, but is a older 4x4 D3 model. DOCSIS 3.0 (D3) takes your traffic and devides it over multiple frequencies. Each frequency is a different channel. Like lanes on a highway, the more you have, the more data you can move over it without being effected by traffic. Since the Sb6121 only has 4 channels, if 1 channel gets congested or noisey, 1/4 your bandwidth drops away. New modems have like the Arris/Moto SB6183 and Netgear CM500 have 16 channels, the CM600 has 24 and the brand new SB6190 has 32! If your speeds aren't consistent through the day, and is worst during high use times, then upgrading the modem may help. See here for a full list of TW modems.

Not to say the modem is the problem. Have you done any tracert or pingpaths to the game servers you play on? Many times the game will have support info showing you how. What games do you play?

I presume the user maybe looking else where into other routers. It's unfortunately that the 5500 didn't get good development during it's time frame.  :'(
