DSL AND ADT SYSTEM
« on: August 09, 2011, 07:42:03 AM »

I Have Verizon DSL Connection At 768K Up And 3 MBPS Down
We Also Have ADT System With 5 Cameras That Our Boss Views Remotely.
When He Is Not Connected To The Cameras The Internet Is Very Fast. When He Is Viewing The Strore Remotely, The Speed Drops Drastically Upload Wise In The Store. I Am Trying To Explain This Is Due To The Extremly Slow Upload Speed We Have. The ADT DVR Does Not Have Any IP Conflicts Nor Does Any Other Device. Where We Are Located, We Are Unable To Get Any Faster Speed....Does This Sound Correct??

768K up is kinda slow and probably for remotely viewing video is probably not enough.
Some things to try:
Are you wired or wireless when viewing remote cameras? Wired is preferred.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA2. Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

it's a all wired in, no wireless
and the setup is a westwell 327w verizon dsl modem set in bridge mode
running the dlink 601. where they are located, the fastest line they can get is the 3 down and 768 up but we both no you never get that, and they also have up to 4 computers using the internet at once processing orders and 5 adt cameras with a network dvr, so there speed sucks, im just trying to explain it not misconfiguration and the upload is to blame once outside connects to the store.

Understand.
Is the slow down seen if you only have one PC connected or turned ON and turning off all the others and you remote in to the cameras? It's possible other network traffic could effect it.
Are you viewing all cameras at onces or one at a time?

they are all view at once. when they are being viewed.
verizon says nothing can be done due the distance we are from the box.
the only other option is satelite but that is expensive and slow as well.
there are 4 computers most of the time, it just one person using it, but we also have
a print server and fileshare being accessed.

Ya, really don't think the networked devices will be a major issue unless they're doing heavy traffic as well.

I presume that since your viewing all cameras at the same time and the UP and Down speeds are really not enough for that and everything else. Can you view one at a time or is that not feasible?

It's unfortunate that you can get something faster for an ISP. Any Cable ISPs around?
One thing about DSL it's impacted by distance, the farther away the faster speeds can't be attained.

One thing you could try and help alleviate some in house traffic, get you a network switch, say an 8 port or 16 port, depending on how many wired devices you have. Put all devices that don't need to always access the Internet on the switch, including print servers and file sharing PCs. Put the one PC that needs to view the cameras directly wired to the router. See if this might help some.

One thing is possible, you might need to get a router that has QoS Priority options. I know that most of the Lower end 600 series routers have basic QoS, however you might need a higher model router that has Prioritizing options so you can give some priority to either the camera PC and/or other PCs that need to access the Internet.

I think your really bound by the ISP speeds here.

Keep us posted.

I noticed that the dir 601 does have the Qos engine, if i enabled that at auto uplink, you think that will help a bit on the speed distribution internally wehn the cameras are connected.

Possible however it won't do any prioritizing or if it does, it might be all automatic and not sure how it will handle everything. Give it a try and see how it goes. In other QoS engines, they allow the user to set up priorities. The lower end 600 routers don't.
