So for the longest time, I thought something was wrong with my phone but I'm convinced now that it must be my router as my wife's Blackberry seems to be getting crappy battery life as well at home on our network.  I've got a Samsung Epic 4G and whenever I leave the wifi connected on my phone at home, it seems to never go into sleep so the battery drains overnight doing nothing.  If I turn off wifi and leave it on the 3G network, battery barely drains at all.  Is there something in my router that could be keeping my phone awake when it's connected.  I've tested it on a friends wifi network and my phone sleeps just fine, it's only when I'm connected to my DIR-655.  I'm on the 1.33 firmware at the moment if that helps.

The phone is probably pinging the router or possibly loosing connection. Does the phone go to sleep fully when not in use? I notice that some phone if turned of or in sleep causes a de-authentication log entry on the routers logs.

What wireless modes are you using? Try single mode G to test?
Possible interference from other wifi in the area.

Look at the routers logs for any information.

Interference is definitely a possibility.  There's usually 5 or 6 networks from the neighborhood when I scan on my phone from the living room.  The odd thing is, my network isn't even the strongest.  It actually shows up second on the list.  Maybe whatever neighbor that's pushing out such a strong single (I don't know if he's using repeaters or what) is messing with my connection but I don't really notice any disconnects when I'm actually using it on WiFi unless I go outside or something.  Right now my router is located in the basement as I had to run a direct line from the outside junction box to my DSL router down there because (according to the phone company tech that looked at it) the way they daisy chained the phone jacks in the house was killing my DSL quality.  I'm sure if my router was upstairs I'd get a much stronger signal but it's not a huge house by any means.

I have 2 laptops, a desktop, a printer and Wii all wireless on the network then an XBox360 and another printer hardwired to it.  I'll try some of your suggestions when I get home.  The phone is supposed to sleep when not in use, and does when I leave it on mobile network.  When I have wifi on and connected to my DIR-655 however, it isn't.

I would try this. Set a DHCP reserved (Static) IP address on the router for the devices including the cell phones. This will ensure each has an IP address and when the phone are in range, they will automatically be assigned to that IP address and will never change unless you change it or the cell phone goes to another network or WiFi.

I would investigate getting the DSL phone lines updated if possible. LOL.

The sad thing is, the house is less than 10 years old.  Whoever built it just did a lazy/cheap job of wiring the phone jacks.

I just did a test of my phone on my work's wifi network and it sleeps just fine.  When I use an OS monitor app to look at the network connections on the phone, at home on the DIR-655 it shows a constant trickle of data, mostly received packets.  Thanks a bunch for the tips.  I'll let you know my results once I try them out tonight.

After a bunch of experimenting I'm happy to report it wasn't the router.  It ended up being HP printer monitoring software on one of my computers that was constantly polling devices on my network.  Got rid of their (apparently flawed) printer suite and just added my printer through Windows and the problem went away.

I have this problem with my Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray, as well as many other users on other forums. On a Swedish forum that I read every day a guy after testing static IP and a bunch of other stuff got this answer from Sony Ericsson:

D-Link DIR-655 & 635:
Slå av funktionaliteten "USB SharePort" på routern.
Shut off the "USB SharePort" funktion in the router.

D-Link DIR-615:
Konfigurera en statisk IP på telefonen. Dock är det viktigt att slå av statisk IP när man byter nätverk. Så länge konfigurationen är påslagen så kommer den att användas på alla nätverk som telefonen kopplar upp till.

Belkin:
Ändra DHCP Lease Time på routern till t.ex. 1 vecka.

I've tried to turn SharePort off on my 655 with firmware 1.34WW, but can't seem to find where to turn it off. I had another router for 3 months and on that router the battery drain was very little (1-2% per day), with the 655 it's about 3% per hour.

So does anyone know how I could fix the battery drain?
(I don't have a printer on my network)

I don't think the USB share function on the router is the problem. The battery drain is probably due to the fact that the wireless device is constantly pinging the routers wifi radio. The device is either not acquireing a connection correctly and keeps trying or the device is being put into sleep mode and brought back out of sleep mode and it's trying to connect.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off or ON Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless to test.

You can't turn off shareport.

I've tried with both G/N, other channels and security modes. There are about 15 different wireless networks around me. But this problem also occured when I was living at my parents house where only our wireless network showed up.

Will try the "Short GI"/"Extra Wireless Protection".

The reason for me asking for help here is because as I said earlier there have been many people with Xperia Ray/Arc/Mini, Samsung Galaxy S2 and other cellphones that have this battery drain problem. None of the fixes I've found has worked, so I thought maybe the guys at D-Link forums would know how to solve this problem.

Understand man.
We've seen recently that having numerous other Wifi routers near by is having an impact on Wifi connections and performance. I call it WiFi congestion. Having so many other Wifi near by is causing the wiifi routers to start to constantly re-auto-scan for a new open channel in which more of the channels are already being used up.

However if you noticed this at your parents place with little or not other wifi routers near by. I would presume this is a issue with the phone and not the router.

Any other programs around that are networking programs that could be pinging wireless devices?

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

I've set some of the things as you said (other were allways set in the "correct" way). Just waiting for about 20-30 minutes to get a better reading of the battery drain.

All I have connected to my network is my computer (which is wired), my Sony VAIO (wireless - just turned it on to use inSSIDer) and my Xbox 360 (also wire - turned off at the moment).

Well as I said I set up my router according to your list but it looks like it didn't have any effect at all.

It looks like the phone won't go to deep sleep when it's connected to WiFi. On the other router I tried it went into deep sleep and Wifi was around 2-3% like maps/android system. I'm going to bed now, but will leave WiFi on over the night to see if the setup worked.

Hey everyone, sorry to bring back this old post but I am surprise to have found this post after all this time I have my phone... I am having this excessive drain issue only when I am at home. When I am anywhere else, I get +20hours of usage with my Galaxy S6 but when I am at home, I get 8 or 9 hours before the battery is totally drained.

I see that there was a fix for samsung devices in one of the firmware, I run 1.37na and I am starting to wonder if there is something to do with the 655 rather than my phone ?

Anyone have found something new since the last post ? any updates on what you did to make the battery life better on your phone vs your 655 ?

After reading this post yesterday, I turn off the wifi on my phone and surprise, I have 22h estimated total battery life on top of two hours of talk time...

Android has a screen that shows what has been using battery. Examine that.

There are also battery drain monitoring apps that should help you.
