Title: DSL 2740R cannot update firmware
Post by: tfw7 on May 28, 2013, 06:38:31 AM
hello there
long story behind why I wish to update firmware - short version is that it was recommended to me as a possible solution to unexplained bandwidth usage.

Anyway, have just spent 4 unsuccessful hours trying to update the firmware. Get error message "failure to update due to ...The uploaded file was not accepted by the router"

Model is DSL 2740R, Firmware Version: UK_1.15 Hardware Version: A1. Was trying to upgrade with version 1.16 from here http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dsl-2740r-wireless-n-adsl2-4-port-modem-router?revision=deu_reva (http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dsl-2740r-wireless-n-adsl2-4-port-modem-router?revision=deu_reva)

have read a few tips on here and elsewhere - did factory reset first, then tried 30-30-30 reset; triued it with DSL cable in/out, firewall and AV connected/disconnected etc etc

any thoughts?

Try this:
FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

If not, I think you'll need to phone contact D-Link support and inquire for help...

Let us know how it goes.

well phoned support....turned out I was trying the wrong file!!  whoops!! feel a tad silly ::)
I thought it was the .bin one but it wasn't, it was the 1.16 one.
But he did also tell me it works much better with the dsl cable out as well, if that is any help to anyone else.

Anyway, good news is I updated the firmware; bad news is is hasn't helped the original problem - my router is still getting masses of bandwidth usage when all devices disconnected. Have spent 3 weeks trying to sort it out with my ISP's help - firmware update was my last resort. I had narrowed it down to router issues as an alternative router connected has no such issues.

Looks like I'm going shopping.........

Sorry it didn't work out for you. I would recommend getting into a MODEM only unit then you can add wireless APs if you need wireless. Easier to manage and offers upgrade ability.

Good luck.
