Questions.
« on: July 03, 2013, 07:42:26 PM »

I now have a 2.5GHz/5GHz (2x2) Broadcom inside of a new desktop computer and I'm looking into upgrading the upstairs router from the DIR-655 to something new.

Based on the reviews from within this forum, I'm impressed with this product.

Based on the reviews at Amazon, I have the following questions:

Is the firmware overly buggy?

What's the range?  I'm in the basement, separated from the router by the floor/ceiling.

What's the 5GHz range, practically speaking?

Does the router really need to be reset (power cycled) daily or does it do its job over the long haul?

IPv6 compatibility?

The Broadcom PCIe adapter inside of my computer connects at 130Mbps on 2.4GHz, which the DIR-655 can handle, but I keep getting a Limited Internet connection in Windows 8 (sometimes in a few minutes, other times up to every half hour).  I have to fully disconnect and reconnect.  I'm tired of doing that.  I believe that the Limited Internet is from all of the congestion on 2.4GHz in this neighborhood - the router sees it all which I have observed upstairs at the router using a WiFi Analyzer app on my Android tablet.  Perhaps the DIR-655 just doesn't handle that connected speed well, I don't know.  Up until this desktop computer, I've always used the DIR-655 at the laptop's 65Mbps which continues to work well.

I'm thinking a better router may help on 2.4GHz.  But mainly I'm interested in using a 5GHz connection between the basement and upstairs which I'm somewhat directly below the upstairs router (somewhat).

In order to resolve the Limited Internet connectivity issue, I've placed the DIR-655 into wireless-g only and the connection on 2.4GHz with the desktop is rock solid.

Thanks you for any honest response because I'm on a tight budget.

Mark.

Been good for me.

What's the range?  I'm in the basement, separated from the router by the floor/ceiling.
Definitely more range with this unit and most of the L series routers I noticed on 5Ghz. Even with the 826L the 5Ghz range is very nice. I watched a movie a while back between the 868L and a DIR-865L in bridge mode connecting in AC mode streaming raw BD files. Only a few bufferings seen however I think that could be attributed to the Boxee possibly connected to the DIR-865L. Definitely handles raw data better than N mode does. I could not watch a raw BD movie on 5Ghz. DVD Files are great on either frequency.

What's the 5GHz range, practically speaking?
I watched a movie between the 868L and 865L and the distance was about 18ft If I remember right.

Does the router really need to be reset (power cycled) daily or does it do its job over the long haul?
Haven't had to power cycle for anything accept for my configuration changes and testing.

IPv6 compatibility?
Hope someone else can chime in on this. I don't use IPv6. Yet. ::)

Adapters are only limited by there design in connections. The 655 can do 300Mb connections however the client side HW has to support it. To get 300Mb connections on WiFi, the router needs to be set for Single Mode N, WPA2/AES Only and Auto 20/40Mhz. My Mac only supports 130Mb on 2.4Ghz. I have to use a different adapter if I want to see 300Mb on 2.4Ghz.

I'm thinking a better router may help on 2.4GHz.  But mainly I'm interested in using a 5GHz connection between the basement and upstairs which I'm somewhat directly below the upstairs router (somewhat).
Need to place any WiFi router centrally as best as possible in any building for best coverage and range. The add on additional WiFi extenders if needed.

In order to resolve the Limited Internet connectivity issue, I've placed the DIR-655 into wireless-g only and the connection on 2.4GHz with the desktop is rock solid.
Over all I'm liking this router all the time. Currently using it until I need to test something else or when the new DGL-5500 comes out.  ;D

Thanks for answering my questions.  I have to wait before buying since my spending budge is such that I already spent all of my surplus cash on this new computer.

I'll keep the 868L in mind as well as considering the coming 5500 when once the reviews of it come out.  The 5500 is to use some interesting bandwidth technology.

Again thanks.

So far D-link has been the best for IPV6 support out of all but the commercial equipment for me. I too am researching 11AC routers, the 2 I really like (one has a 700-Mw amp built in for both bands) don't look like they even have a firewall for IPV6, that is a deal breaker considering most of my surfing is done on IPV6.

I changed internet providers for a while so I did not have IPV6 for several months but I just went back to my old provider and my DIR-827 is GREAT on 5Ghz and IPV6, too bad it just does not do the 11AC.

I wonder if they have a firmware Emulator for the DIR-868L, that would answer the question in 2 seconds about IPV6 support........

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53989.0

I found the link above that answered my question because I could not find an emulator.

It appears that the router has the same support for IPV6 as my DIR-827, which is excellent compared to the rest of the pack.

As far as buggy firmware, most of the negative comments I have ran into about routers with 11AC from several different manufacturers is buggy firmware, sometimes it hurts to be a first adopter! The upside, this router has been out for a while where some of the other competitions is barely past Beta. There is one router that had a Batman theme that supposedly crashes regularly. Nice looking router, if crashing regularly don't matter......

I still can't get past the 700Mw though.........

Wow, he lives.  :o

Well you could say that this is the 2nd gen router too as the DIR-865L was the first to be released. It also is a good router and is very stable.

I recently thought there could be an issue with the 868L and using a DWA-180 however I found out that there is a problem on the USB side of things with my client devices I'm testing with. I finally installed USB 3.0 PC card yesterday and wala, thing works great. I got to check on a few things now.

Glad ur still around sir and thanks for posting.  ::)

I read that USB 3.0 and 2.4Ghz Wifi post below(thanks for posting!!!!), nasty problem, I wonder how that got overlooked by the entire industry! Time to break out my E-SATA cable.

I have USB 3.0 also, that hard drive has NEVER worked right. Now I will give the E-SATA a try. I am still running that 1 watt 2.4Ghz AP with a 18-Db directional antenna, that explains a lot. :'( Maybe I will just get rid of the 1-watt A/P(give it to the kids LOL!).....

Me thinks I will go without the high power WiFi, I really love the USB 3.0 speeds for reading my camera cards and thumb drive backups(USB 3.0 Card reader and 3.0 thumb drives) in a room with -10Dbm of 2.4Ghz Wifi  :o

Time for the radio engineer to CRANK it down.........

It would be interesting if you turned OFF all 2.4Ghz Wifi and re-tested your USB 3.0 drive to see if there is any differences.

Glad ur still around man.  ;)

BTW i got a hold of a DIR-827. Works just as good as my 857.  ;D

I am going to try that, or at least turn the power down this weekend, kids will be at Comic con. I just did a 2.4Ghz power measurement last night.

I needed to access my USB 3.0 backup drive last weekend, 3-4 re-boots just so the OS would find it!

I went with a 512Gb SSD for my main HD and the USB 3.0 HD I turn on to archive, I HATE turning that HD drive on, it takes forever to show up, if it does at all. That makes too much sense.

I purchased a new internal WiFi card for my laptop, I will put that in too. I mostly use 5Ghz for myself at home, it covers a 3K ft 2 story OK but I am hoping this new internal card will make it better. Kids purchased a stupid DS3, 802.11B, REALLY???? For 200 bucks. Otherwise I would just turn 2.4 off.

I love my DIR-827!

Thanks for keeping the place tidy!  ;)

OK, turning the RF off here at home did not effect how well USB 3.0 worked. Ripping out Windoz 8 by the roots and reinstalling Win 7 sure did though. I really did not realize how many things began to malfunction with Windoz 8 until I uninstalled it.

I put Win 8 in fairly early, you would think that "KEY" drivers would be debugged by now. Heck I even have E-mail encryption back working correctly....... ;D

I haven't even bothered installing 8 yet. Probably wont. Seems like it's another Vista experience all over again. I like Windows 7.
