Restricting my brothers internet abuse
« on: July 31, 2010, 09:04:14 AM »

Hello!

The question I have for you today is if there is any way in the DIR-655 router where it would be possible to restrict my brothers torrentabuse to a somewhat acceptable level.

I own a broadband that is possible at pulling 650Kbs down and 70KBS up. 5000/500 internet or so.

The problem here is that my brother is a huge fan of torrent and at all times if hes not downloading at max, hes atleast uploading at max speed at all times times and slowing the internet down making it worthless for all kinds of videogames on PS3 and computers.

What I would like to do is restrict his ability to download and upload.

Myself im connected using an ethernet cable, with windows XP. Hes using the wireless network with windows7. In our house we also have another laptop and a PS3 that use our wireless internet, and it would be best if those units stay left out of the restriction :)

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks.

EDIT: To be more clear, Im not only looking to slow down his torrent use, but all kinds of traffic really. Since hes not really any good with computers he does often without even noticing it reserve all of the internet for himself for days without even knowing so himself, so a general restriction would be the best.

Yes it can use the Qos scheduler and give the computers no dhcp ades but an dhcp reservation in the router.

Then in the QOAs set tgheir priority at 255, and yours at 1 now you got better throuhput then theirs.
Or an  other posibillity is to set the upload and download speed limitation in the torrent program.
That are the only options, Dlink has no limitar in their frirmware to set the limiattion for upload and download speed.

Alien's YES is actually a NO  ;)

You cannot limit bandwidth useage with the Dlink routers, only regulate priority of connected IP's is somewhat (QoS).

You have a couple of choices:
- get a router which allows for bandwidth throttling (Vigor) or a DD WRT/Tomato custom firmware capable router (not sure if DD WRT has this though)
- set bandwidth restriction on the client (Netlimiter)
