Well Im still debating if Im getting it for me, or for my dad. I will probably buy it for me first, test it out, configure it, play with it, etc, and then give it to him but with remote access incase I need to check anything.

Your dad do any gaming? I really wouldn't recommend this router for just the average home user that does email, surf and moderate video streaming. Seems like a waste of features that would not be used.  :-\

Looks great, if its base of their Bigfoot Killer series, should be awesome.

But, my DGL-4500 is running like a champ still, not sure if its worth blowing money just for the sake "mine is bigger than yours"

Would not get much use from the wireless improvements, since all my important stuff is wired now (DLNA clients, ps3, & xbox360).

But their QOS from Bigfoot technology is top notch, especially for lag and ping times.

Supposed to be good. Been told, "it's a beautiful thing!"

Glad your 4500 is running well. They are still great routers, even though mine is bigger than yours. Hehe.  ;D

Enjoy.

ok, can you somehow arrange to get one of these sent out to Tim Higgins at Smallnetbuilder, I would love to see his take on this puppy.

I read some of the details, and it is very interesting concept to set certain bandwidth speed limits per device, not sure if there is anything else like it in the consumer space (at least I have never seen it).

the way QOS is handled by priority on DGL-4500 is great, but i think is taking bandwidth sharing to the next level. No need to let netflix client take all the bandwidth.

Thats in the hands of DLink and the PM there I don't have any say on what goes on regarding that. If anything I want one first.  ::) LOL

I presume at some point DLink might sent some out for review and or reviewers will acquire them by some means.

Actually its weird..I don't think he has reviewed any of Dlink's cylinder type routers. I think his last review was of the DIR-857 if I am not mistaken. Its too bad, I'm a huge fan of his work too. Opening up a router and look at it parts can tell you so much about build quality you just can't get from feature lists and performance reviews. Imagine buying a car without even popping open the hood.

I read that review, and it seems lately d-links routing performance and functions are superior to the competition, but their wireless speeds/range are lacking. D-Link is usually the only ones that implement the better chipsets, like Ubicom/Bigfoot Killer series. For me that is more important, but alot of the ****py cnet reviews tend to focus just on the wireless aspect.

But I will be honest, Asus has really stepped it up lately and might be my next router if DGL-5500 does not turn out that great. Each company is releasing too many products (with many subsequent revisions), instead of taking the apple approach, of making one solid product, and giving it dedicated care throughout its product lifetime.

Maybe they will finally update their default QoS rules? I think they still have CounterStrike on there. Not to say there is anything bad about CS, but its not exactly a cutting edge game. Heh.
