Consistent USB device problems
« on: November 23, 2020, 07:58:49 AM »

I just got this router to replace the one that Spectrum provides. This is mainly because we're switching to Frontier for a faster connection; we had no problems with Spectrum but I'd like to have a faster connection for less per month.

Shockingly, the Spectrum router was solid in performance - good coverage in the house and the attached USB drive was shared easily on the network and accessed by Plex with no problems whatsoever. So color me surprised that the DIR-2680's USB device is performing much, much worse than it did on Spectrum.

It's not the speed of reading & writing that's the problem, and it's not wifi dropping in & out (the signal is strong & consistent, I've been monitoring it for an hour now). It seems that the USB device just disappears & reappears regularly. Here's what 5 minutes of downloading torrents looks like.

If this is how the actual router performs, it's awful. Is it a hardware problem? Or a firmware issue?

I just checked and I have firmware version 1.0 from 2018-10-03 and it claims that this is the latest version. It seems a bit old for 'latest version.' Also, when I first tried to go to the firmware settings page I got a 'router not found' error. There is something up with this router and I'm not going to be able to keep it if the problem can't be resolved. Any help would be appreciated.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

I would update to this version here:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=74701.0

Factory reset and setup from scratch to see if this helps.

How long have you had the router for?

I'm in the US and the via the router's web interface updated to 1.04.

Now the problem is worse - my internet overall drops out, I was watching Skillshare vids and they stalled every couple of minutes. The hard drive is doing the same thing as before. When it's fast, it's super fast but the dropouts are rendering it useless (I couldn't use Plex last night because of the hard drive issue). The one desktop we have is on ethernet and has no problems but we have 10 devices on wifi.

I've had the router since Wednesday. I'm reasonably experienced - the router I had previously to Spectrum's was a Netgear R7000 whose firmware I replaced with Advanced Tomato. So far, the Spectrum router has been the most stable router I've ever used.

I was excited about the 2680 after reading reviews that noted it's file transfer speeds but in practice, it's just not reliable.
