Unable to browse while downloading
« on: April 29, 2016, 01:26:22 AM »

Hello,
My other router died last month (it was a D-Link DIR-600), he ran for 5 years, 24/7.. not having a single problem with him in all that time. RIP buddy :(

Happy with D-link, I went on and got a N300 DIR-605L. However, it has one problem: Whenever I try browsing or using the wifi while the desktop is downloading things, it says Unable to find server, connection unavailable, etc. The only exception I found to this is TeamSpeak, it keeps working even with download in progress.

I have the same internet connection as always: wired, fiber (modem for fiber cable >> utp out of modem >> router >> utp to desktop; and wifi around the house)
This happens when I install a game with it's launcher, or update a game, or download something from steam, or download a torrent.
For the duration of the download I have no internet access on wifi or desktop browsers.
If I connect the desktop directly to the internet there is no such problem.

I lived with it till now, but it's kind of anoying.. What to do while waiting for a download? ...Hmm, I know, browsing! ...Meh.
Settings are factory default, I only set up the internet connection with user and pass.
Is there a way for me to fix this? Thanks

uploading a photo of it's back also, in case it helps

Link>Welcome!

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have? Link> Speed Testing Sites
  • By-pass the main host router and check internet connection by connecting a wired LAN PC directly to the ISP modem to verify connection access and ISP speeds.

If your download is taking most of the bandwidth on the PC then maybe something on the PC that needs to be configured....test this out by directly connecting to the ISP modem with the PC and do the same process, download then check web page access.

Do you have QoS set up any?

Hey,
Firmware Version : 2.06
Hardware Version : B2
Location is Romania

ISP Modem Mfr. & model #? I don't know what those mean. ....It's a Chinese thing called ZTE ZXA10 F625G

Anyway..
I by-passed the main host router and connected the computer directly to the ISP modem, I started downloading Guild Wars 2 + a game from steam + a torrent (all at the same time) and I have no problem accesing webpages with the setup above.
Also did some speed tests like that, results below:
Local  - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5288382288
To UK - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5288377146

No QoS, I use pppoe connection, through the switch then ONT

I'd get into a router that had Gb ports on its switch WAN and LAN. the 605L only supports 100Mb connections and maybe another reason for this problem. Your doing a game download and torrenting and other things, this model router probably is not enough and what your doing is maxing out is bandwidth. I bet if you did  one simple download and then tried to browse a web site, it would work ok.

I would take your money on that bet. The only reason I'm writing here is because, it only takes one simple download to stop the internet on browsers and WiFi. And I never had a problem like that with the old router, witch was even crappier than this one.

And yes, I know one with with Gb ports would be better, so would a big house with a pool and a fast car.... but that is not the reason this is happening.

Guess there is nothing else to do than send it to warranty. Thx anyway

I would get something different. The 605L is a low end router and good for general stuff. If your doing downloads, gaming and streaming, you need something better. DIR-655 series or DIR-8 series routers and up should be looked at.

Good Luck.

IMHO please try to limit your bandwidth allocation for downloads especially for torrents then try to browse again...

BTW whats the bandwidth of your internet connection?

I always had issues uploading files on docsis1.0 that would cause issues with other applications using the net.  Docsis3.0 isn't a lot better with more channels bonded, but still some hiccups with 30 down/6 up.
