Manual hangups DSL PPPoE
« on: January 07, 2015, 04:33:50 PM »

I just purchased the DIR-605L version B1 FW 2.04UI. My internet is AT&T's DSL service, I have tried connecting to both a Westell C90 and NetgearDM111PSP both in bridge mode. I have tried manual configuration and auto-detect. PPPoE. Located in the US (North Carolina)

Dynamic IP
I used the correct username/password associated with the account.
Always on
I tried both the ISPs DNS and googles DNS
default MTU

After setup and reboot of the router I get the basic screen which says internet disconnected. Green world light is on. I go back into advance retype the password and reboot, then in the Status tab, it shows my ISP issued an IP and subnet mask. Then I try to access a web page. I get no response from the web page and the router disconnects clearing the IP and subnet mask.

Logs indicate a Manual Hangup Disconnect PPPoE line.

I know the username password is correct as I have tried connecting with my DIR-655 and have no issues connecting under the same conditions. I do not have a cordless phone so there should be no conflict there.

Link>Welcome!

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

u]Router and Wired Configurations[/u]
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
  • Turn on DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
  • Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

PC Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.
Be sure to log into the Admin account on the router.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

What model is the DIR-655 and what FW version is currently loaded?

Wired, but if the router is manually hanging up I don't think that should matter.

Factory resets have been performed a couple times while trying to get it to work. symptoms continue.

I don't think I should need to set IP reserved IP addresses for equipment connecting unless the device can't handle DHCP then its an inferior router.

I will check Unicasting. I have already tried different DNS servers.

The DIR-655 is version B with 2.07. I had tried to upgrade the FW to 2.11 a few times, but every time I did, connectivity instability would ensue. So I would have to roll back to 2.07.

I bought the 605L to test the cloud features and to give me something spare to troubleshoot with also since the 655 has the instability issues with the latest FW I thought I might test the waters with something different.

Well the 655 is far superior than the 605L accept for the cloud feature. I do have the DIR-655 Rev B and haven't seen any issues with v2.11. v2.07 has a problem with Shareport If I remember right.

You could post over on the 655 forum and we could trouble shoot the 655 if you want too. I prefer the 655 over the 605L. There is a beta build for the 655 that you could try. We would need to know a bit more information though...please post there.

As for the 605L, if the 655 is working and the 605L isn't using similar ISP setup configurations and it's disconnecting on it's own, I can only presume that the 605L maybe faulty. One think you could try is to reload FW load manually using the following:

I'll try reload the FW manually on the 605L, but I suspect I will be taking it back as a faulty product.
