Routing IP Address on my Network
« on: January 02, 2015, 04:00:00 PM »

Perhaps I am expecting too much from my router but to my thinking, this should be possible.

I have an Xbox 360 wired to my router, lets call it IP address 192.168.0.150.  I also have a WII connecting to my network via Wireless connection, call it IP 192.168.0.175.  I want to leave IP 175 as is (for Netflix purposes) but I would like to have the Xbox access the Internet via a VPN service.  My understanding is that I should be able to assign IP 150 to either route or port forward (forgive my ignorance if these are incorrect) to a IP Blocking service such as Un-Block-Us or similar service.  Is this possible or am I making this hole procedure harder than it need be.

I am thinking by doing this through the router I can centralize the settings and leave the individual machines alone.  Also if I can do this, should the need arise in the future, I can isolate another machine on my network (ie. My son's computer which I want to control internet access...time, websites visited, etc)

Any comments?  Thanks.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Id set up a reservation on router for both consoles using the current IP addresses.

You could use Virtual Server to set up a VPN service. You'll need to refer to the VPN services for help and information on what ports are needed.

I am using a DIR-816L Hardware Version B1 Firmware 2.05.  My location is Eastern Ontario and am accessing the Internet via Rogers Cable Internet.  My modem is the Rogers Wi-Fi Modem (set in Bridge Mode only...I don't want to give Rogers that much control over my network) Speeds clock in at 37 meg down and 5 meg up.

DHCP Reservations is how I locked down the network on my old Dlink router.  Changed DHCP Range to .185 to .199, one space for each device accessing the network and then assigned a reservation to each so each machine would have the effect of a static IP even though still set to dynamic. Only machines I allow on the network can access it; even if they manage to get password, no room at the inn.  (I have yet to set this up on this router as I only picked it up a couple of weeks ago)

I believe the VPN service is how I need to proceed but have not been able to see how to isolate the specific IP address for my machine.  I assume that at that point, I will need to set a new gateway and DNS but have yet to come across where to enter these in the Dlink user interface.

D-Link routers mostly work as VPN pass thrus so not much VPN configuration is needed on the router for peer to peer VPN. Most of of the configuration maybe only needed at the end points, i.e. consoles.

Thanks,  I will give this a try.  I went looking again for more specific instructions on the console setup.  The original instructions I looked up appeared to skip a step (they only said to change the Primary and Secondary DNS but left out the part about choosing a DHCP outside the range of my router range settings).  This is most likely why I was having trouble.  Have to wait for the little guy to go to bed before I can try any further changes  :P

Ok, yes you can use static IPs on the devices too. I'd probably try that first and see how it goes.

Let us know what you find out. Good Luck.
