DL / UL speed problems with 605L
« on: August 03, 2014, 12:49:50 PM »

Hi,

as the topic states I'm having connection speed problems with my 605L.

I connect to the internet with a cable modem, and behind the modem is my 605L. The modem is bridged, so double natting isn't the problem.

If I connect directly to the cable modem, I'll usually get dl speeds around 50-60Mbps. Trough the 605L the speed goes down to less than 5Mbps (using the same cable). What is even more curious, is that if I connect wirelessly to the 605L I'll get dl speed in the range on 20-30Mbps.

I'm running firmware version 1.12,  Fri 20 Apr 2012.

Can anyone help?

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router and CP, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off TrueGigaBit Routing under Setup/Internet/Manual for those routers that have this feature for testing.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. For the DGL-5500, review this for Streamboost information and settings: Furry's DGL-5500 Review
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
  • Turn on DNS Relay  under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI to test.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. The DST setting is only needed in the NA region. Tools/Time.

reset your router's settings to factory default

what I discovered today in relation to this topic I made a while back: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=59539.0 - yes it keeps you settings, but ..

when I connected the LAN cable from my ISP directly into my PC's NIC I would get 100mbps in ISP's speed test; connected trough the router (PPoE) I would get roughly 50mbps

I did a factory reset and everything is working OK, so far

Resetting to Factory defaults will clear any changes users have made to the routers configuration.

If your going to do any factory reset, save the current routers configuration to file first before doing the reset.  ;D

Thank you for your answers.

I did a factory reset before I wrote my message here - but it didn't help. I now upgraded the firmware from 1.12 to 1.14, and somehow it helped a bit. Wired connection is now a bit faster (about 10Mbps), but wireless is still way more faster (about 35Mbps).

If I connect my desktop directly to the bridging cable modem using the same cabling I get speeds exceeding 60Mbps.

did you do a factory rest after the FW update to 1.14??

I factory reseted the router now. Now I'm getting equal dl/ul speed with wireless and wired connections. But still my speeds are way lower (about 25Mbps) when I use the router, than they would be if I'm wired directly to the cable modem (about 60 Mbps).

FurryNutz: I'm sorry if I haven't given you enough information. I though I had described my system in enough detail. What else do you need to know?

In case you are referring to the questions in you first post, then:

I'm located in northern Europe.
I have tested both wired and wireless connections to the router.
I have factory reseted the device both before and after the firmware update.
The router was not working properly before the update (please see my previous posts).

My cable modem is Cisco EPC3825, running the latest Cisco provided firmware. The cable modem is running in bridged mode.

My Dlink get its IP via DHCP from my ISP.

I have checked the cabling.

If the router has not worked at all and continues to exhibit this issue. One problem is that your ISP modem maybe supporting 1000Mb speeds on the WAN port. This model router, even though it's compatible, only supports 100Mb on the WAN port. You maybe introducing a bottleneck between your client devices and the ISP modem. I would recommend getting into a DIR series router that supports 1000Mb on the WAN port so you can ensure that you getting good speeds from the ISP services, thru the ISP modem, router and to your clients. GB WAN port supporting routers starts with DIR-636L and up. ALL 8 Series routers support GB WAN ports.

The Cisco modem supports 10M/100M/1000M. Even though the 605L only supports 100M I cannot understand how it would bottleneck the 60Mbps speeds down to 25Mbps.

Is any Traffic Shaping and or QoS enabled? Try disabled?

Unit could be faulty too.  :-\

I'm not 100%, but I don't think the 605L even supports QoS (except in a way trough the "Traffic Control".

I'm starting to think this router might be flawed - it isn't excatly new anymore.

If Traffic Shaping has been disabled, try disabling SPI (firewall) as well and test.

Only thing I can think of would be to test this router at a different location like a friend or families place to see if the problem follows. Then you'd know.

Well, to be honest, it's a low budget router so it may not have some of the other features seen on other series routers. Ya it should be working and should work well for your ISP speed spec.

Overall IMO, you have a good ISP service and modem with supporting 1000Mb connections. I occasionally test out 100Mb routers just for testing and problem solving, however this is short term. I prefer to primarily run all 1000mb connections from ISP end to Client end as much as possible. I don't see a need to have a bottleneck in the mix. Just me though.

Traffic shaping is disabled, as well as SPI.

The low-budget part is why I bought the router in the first place ;) I worked back then where I needed it though.

Thank you for you help!

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.
