Is the DIR-605L a decent upgrade from the DRI-601?
« on: March 14, 2014, 06:21:14 PM »

Recently the wireless signal from my 601 has failed to broadcast.  I did a hard reset and can't find any reason why this is happening, so I am having to assume the hardware is failing after 3 or so years of use.  I nearly bought the same model again, but then I saw the DIR-605L was only a few dollars more.  So what say you, is the DIR-605L @ $27.00 a worthy upgrade over the DIR-601 @ $23.00?

I should probably note that the router is being used as an access point for general computer stuff, Netflix/Youtube, and a little online gaming.  I had no problems with the 601 when it worked, so if the 605L is at least as good as that then I think I'd be okay.

Whats your price range for a new router? You might consider a DIR-636L or a DIR 826L...any future proofing or need for 5ghz?

Thanks for the reply,

I don't think I'd want to spend more than ~$40 on it.  I realize that probably isn't a whole lot but considering I was happy with what I had and it's now only $23 I guess I am not seeing much of a need to upgrade beyond what the 605L offers at a similar price, so long as the 605L is as good and hopefully worth the extra few dollars.

I'm not sure the 5Ghz signal would be needed in my set up.  I've never had issues with interference (could always change, sure, but I'm not worried about it).  I've read that dual antennas on a 2.4Ghz router can match if not often surpass the speed performance of 5Ghz, which I believe the 605L has, but even if this were not the case everything that would require higher speeds like the media players and gaming systems are hard wired anyway.

With my current set up I have a DIR-655 hooked into the modem, then coming off of that I have three DIR-601 routers.  Two in the house and one in an adjacent building.  The one in the adjacent building is the one failing to broadcast signal.  So the DIR-605L would need to play nice with the two 601s and the main 655.

Then the 605L should work for your needs then...
