Weak Signal

Hardware Version B1
Firmware Version 2.00 (Fri 22 Mar 2013)

[Purchased in Thailand but I live in Australia - if this is significant?]

I've followed other threads and tips and tried the defaults plus the majority of other changes to the settings.

Never get above 2/4 bars of signal. If I go Right next to the antenna (12 down to 6 inches) I get 4/4 bars.

My ISP is TPG and it is an ADSL2+ connection. Currently it comes in thorough a phone line, into a Dynalink RTA1025W Router. That router gives me 4/4 bars through the whole (small) apartment except 3/4 at the extremities (say balcony).

[The idea of the D-Link was to give me N WiFi to compatible devices and to allow devices such as my Nintendo 3DS onto the network as that causes the Dynalink to crash].

* I have successfully connected to the web over the D-Link Router (and connected my laptop, phone, tablet and Nintendo to the web) by leaving my Dynalink as it is and or with the Dynalink set to Bridging mode. I can make it work but the signal is weak. So weak in fact that The D-Link near useless to me.

* I've tried disabling WiFi on the Dynalink and checking/editing channel settings to see if there is interference/conflict. No idea if any neighbours have cordless phones but I don't.

Set-up is straight from the book. Phone-line > Dynalink RTA1025W > Ethernet from ETH1 to INTERNET socket of the D-Link > Ethernet from ETH1 to Laptop (Ubuntu).

Nothing yet has made a difference.

Ideas please :)

Wireless Configurations

  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

hello and thanks for helping.

As said I had read over and tried several things before but I have just gone through all of these thing you suggest once again. making the settings, saving, restarting and testing.
 
I've tried getting as far away as possible from any interference and gone through the entire "router as an AP" thing too.
 
So far no joy. the only time I get a strong signal is right next to (6-12 inches) the router.
 
As I've tried all settings I suspect interference but am struggling to find what or ways to avoid/isolate.
 
There are roughly 20 WiFi modems in range of me but only 3 with a remotely good signal: a neighbour, showing 2 bars, my D-Link showing little to nothing and my original Dynalink showing 4/4 bars.
 
I plan to test again soon and have my Dynalink fully off to see whether that is swamping the D-Link.

I've sat in as isolated a place as possible with only the router, myself and a tablet PC. I've been through every setting I can find, one by one. I've even tried different security and also no security.

basically same situation: weak signal unless I'm right up close to the D-Link. even just over 1 foot away the signal drops to 3/4.

turning my Dynalink completely off made no difference and when I turned it back on it showed 4/4 bars signal while the D-Link showed 2/4 bars. note that the Dynalink was several meters away (downstairs) and the D-Link right next to me.

puzzled! :-)

is it possible that the Thai power plug (or router) is underpowered by the Australian supply?


plug rated:100-240v 50/60hz 0.2a
output 5v 1a


should be good on Australian power supply?


just trying to rule out everything.

The D-Link router is now sitting, powered off, and gathering dust.

This is a pity. I had high hopes and now it's useless to me as I just can't get a decent signal no matter what I try.

Any ideas?

Did you read thru the Managing Signal Congestion, try lowering the power output of the 605L...

Check the specs of the power supply with the user manual or specs on the regional web site. If you bought in the same region, it should be ok.

Hello,

Yes, sure did. Dropping the signal power produced an even lower signal.

I tried lowering the power of my working router too but that did not aid the weal D-Link.

I'll recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and get additional help and possible RMA your 605L.

I recommend that phone for more immediate help and information. Emails sometimes won't produce the desired results.
