Only operates in G mode
« on: June 10, 2013, 12:24:39 PM »

So I just got my new 605L and set it up.

FW version is 1.12.
My connection is cable (30mbps down, 20mbps up), and I'm using a static IP protocol (wifi + DHCP behind the router).
The config was pretty much the default one until it started behaving oddly.

It only operates in G mode. Which is slow. My download speed is around 1.6MB/s when it should be twice as fast as it were on my old router a few days ago.
My laptop's WLAN card can operate in N mode and reach higher speeds. Yes, I'm sure about that, I've used it with a TP-Link router until it broke a few days ago, and it operated properly.

A few details:
- My wireless mode under Advanced Wireless Settings is 802.11Mixed(n/g/b)
- The "band width:" option was set to 20MHz. I changed it to 20MHz/40MHz(Auto). Not sure what this is. Didn't help.
- My QoS is turned on (used to be turned off, this is not the issue, it used to behave the same way).
- No DNS services are turned on.
- My correct MTU size appears to be 1472 so I set it to that.
- WPA2 Personal/TKIP. I need TKIP because I've setup another dd-wrt router to connect to this one.

There is a firmware update available. Should I install it?
Also, I am a programmer so feel free to go technical.

Link>Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • Try turning off Short GI, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Ensure your client side wifi adapter drivers are up to date if drivers are used. Ensure that the adapter properties and configuration for the adapter are set up for Automatic or N mode WiFi enabled. I have seen some adapters that support N mode however in the adapters configuration itself, its not enabled by default from the Mfr. Please refer the Mfr support web sites for this information if needed.

Hi, thanks for the quick, although template response.

- I'm in Bulgaria.
- Yes, a factory reset has been performed.

- The default SSID is changed. You obviously haven't looked at my screenshot.
- No cordless house phones
- Yes, a few other WiFi routers are around but this is not the issue. And no, I'm not connecting by accident to a different router.
- Not sure what WMM

I've answered your other questions in my first post. You might find my screenshot helpful as well.
I tried your suggestions, and I'm getting the same result.

Please try some of the other suggestions and answer some of the questions presented. The more details you give the better we can provide feed back and help. The screen shot only has minimal information that is of no use here.
WMM Enable is QoS for WiFi. It maybe that this feature is not available or an option on this model router.

You have the latest FW version for this model router. If any of the suggestions fail to work for you or and yo can ensure that your devices are supporting of N modes, testing of other N mode devices and the configuration of the devices are working and they fail to connect at N modes on this router, then you'll need to phone contact your regional D-Link support office and get this router into RMA.

Good Luck.

I don't have a "WMM Enable" option.
Edit: found it in my wireless card settings (not on my router). I enabled it. No change.
Edit 2: Found Short GI on my wireless card settings as well. I did what you suggested for the WMM Enable and Short GI options. No change.

Here's what I have now:

Should I try updating my firmware? This is not supposed to fix it but I don't know...

I see your WiFi security is set for TPIK only. N mode does not support TPIK and requires AES. Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
