I bought a new modem/router DSL-2740R B1 with firmware EU_1.00
I had a issue: a notebook connected in WIFI LAN was not able to open a share folder of an PC connecetd to WIFI LAN
SO i decided to upgrade firmware using this file DSL-2740R B1 UK 1.02 20130709.bin
After this upgrading an assembled PC win 7 Ultimate + SP1 with network board DLINK DWL-G510 C2 with last firmware (DWL-G510_drv_RevC_v5.20-s0038-20090909) has always issue: sometimes lows the connection to router, sometimes the internet is very slow and often th einternet is not running without yellow triangle icon
I have other several devices conncted and i have not issue with them !!
This PC has never had issue with previous model of router DSL-G624T

Does a wired LAN cable connection from the Windows 7 PC to the modem work?
Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0) and Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0)
- Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers.
- What wireless modes are you using?
- 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
- Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
- Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channel) to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
- What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard), so you might want to try TPIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_Key_Integrity_Protocol) only or Auto TPIK and AES.
- What wireless devices do you have connected?
- Any cordless house phones?
- Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?
-
Many thanks for the support
Now i can't try with a wired connection because the nearest phone plug is not available
SSID is changed and completely different
I tried mixed B,G,N, only G; i can try only N because my PCI card wifi adapter is G
Until now i used only the default channel width 20, i will use 20/40 too
Until now i used channel 6 (default);: i will try 1
Until now i used with WPA-personal with TPIK and WPA2-personal with AES
I have connected to the router several devices (notebook, tablet, smartphone to a max number of 6-8)
Yes i have a cordless phone (not change if it is switched off)
Yes there are (at now) 3 others wifi routers; they are using channels 1 or 11
SO there are not overlapped routers
Please help me
I am not able to understand the reason why :(
You have to remember that:
1. i used until now a DSL-G624T wo a problem !!
2. i have not problem until use the 2740R B1 with firmware EU 1.00
3. I have not problem with ALL THE OTHERS CONNECTED DEVICES
-
Try single mode G on 20/40Mhz, set a manual channel that does not over lap the other modems near by.
Ensure your Windows 7 PC wireless drivers are up to date.
Test the Windows 7 PC wired LAN cable to the back of the modem as a temporary short test to see if that works.
If all this fails, I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and inquire about additional help and information.
-
... and about the wireless security mode ?
If i understood well to achieve the max comatibility i have to set:
SECURITY MODE: WPA-PERSONAL
WPA MODE: WPA ONLY (TPIK) or Auto (WPA or WPA2) (TPIK or AES)
Are you agree ?
And about a downgrade to EU 1.00 firmware ?? What do you think about ?
-
Give this a try and test. Preferred security mode is WPA2 and AES only however some device may not support the AES process.
-
on datasheet of adapter DWL-G510 C2 i read:
Security
- 64/128/152-bit WEP data encryption
- WPA EAP, WPA PSK
-
Ok so for that adapter to work, you'll need to test with WPA only and TPIK only for the best compatibility and support for that adapter.
-
OK
... and about Group Key Update Interval ??
And about a downgrade to EU 1.00 firmware ?? What do you think about ?
-
Should need to change that since the key or password isn't changed.
If you've already updated, I don't know if downgrading will help or of you can do that with out breaking the modem and bricking it.
-
Well
i tried this setting:
802.11 Mode: B/G
Wireless channel: 6 (it is not used by other router in my range)
Channel Width: 20Mhz (there is not 20/40 option for B/G setting of for G only)
Security Mode: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: WPA only (TKIP)
At moment ... it seems to runs well ;)
I hope to have fixed the issue
Otherwise i will come back here :)
Many many thanks
paolo

Glad you got it working.
Come back if needed.
Enjoy.
-
It seems OK :)
As you know i setted to B/G
If i try to set to B/G/N ... i have a doubt
i have this PC with G PCI adapter + 2 notebooks with N wifi adapter + smarthone and laptop (onestly i don't know)
Is the ruoter able to use N and G at some time or it decrease to G for all ??
-
Ya I know that some of the DSL series modems don't offer Mixed G and N modes for some reason. I would do this, if you need N modes, I would shut off the wireless on the DSL modem and install a D-Link model DAP wireless device that can provide you with better modes of operation and support for your devices.
Something from this list of devices in the EU region could work well for you:

-
sometimes the connection is not fluid ???
A web page does not open, i have to wait ...
sometime is very fast and usefull :o
Could be an effect of distance between router and PC ?
There are more or less 5 mt as distance but there is a wall
-
Yes distance can be a factor in the connection between the Modem and router.
5 mt?
-
Yes distance can be a factor in the connection between the Modem and router.
5 mt?
yes more or less ... as the crow flies
-
what is 5 mt? meters?
-
yes meters
-
Also placement is critical as well:

i see ...
a doubt
i have the router on a small table; a wireless phone is plugged to the some plug (with adsl filter of course) but the base is very close to the router (20 cm)
Is this a problem ?
-
Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.
Specially round other 2.4Ghz devices...
-
i try
-
Nothing .. and i have not good news :(
Few minutes ago i had issues (slow surfing) ... uhm ... ::)
I thinked: what best situation to try to switch off the cordless phone ?? :o
Well i did but ... the connection to Internet stopped with a yellow triangole icon >:(
Some disconnection to router ... as before :'(
TRAGEDY i have the some issue of before !!!!
My arms on the ground :-\ :'(
-
Now i am tired
Tomorrow i try to downgrade to EU 1.00
because a thing is sure : with this old firmware i had not problems
Of course all can be (for example tha adapter G510 became out of order ... could be) but i want try
-
Can you test with your Windows PC closer to the modem? Say 2 meters away...
I would do a factory reset, send the FW file using FF or IE, if it goes, do one more factory reset then set up the modem from scratch.
Keep us posted.
-
i will try to test a more closer modem
A note:
the upgrade that i have done was performed wired using this next procedure:
CONNECTED by cable to modem
RESET to default factory the modem
SETted a static IP on oc
SWITCHED OFF Antivirus and firewall on pc
upgrade the modem
reset to defaul factory
set the modem in order to achieve Internet
-
Awesome, good job. ;)
-
Dlink EU has suggested me to delete temporary the password of wifi connection
No good news !
Always the some problem
I have to fix the issue on my network of phone in order to connect the modem/router in a closer postion to PC
Probably i need a day :(
-
Keep us posted.
-
I used a very big cable between the only plug running and the room with PC
In this way i have the router at 2 meters far wo wall or other ostacle
It is running well , wo disconnection, surfing, ALL seems OK :)
The rate is decreased (around 600 kbit/sec less than before) but probably this is cause of big cable (around 25 meters)
YOU HAVE RIGHT: the problem is the distance; the adapter DLINK DWL-G510 is unable to connect the router when it is far
Now i have to fix my internal network in order to connect the router to the phone plug wo using the big cable :)
-
Glad you found it's working with cable and shorter distance. You may want to get into a wireless AP or extender if you can't make the long wires work in place.
Hope you can get it working better for you.
-
I fixed the internal network of phone
Now i have the possibility to plug the modem closer the pc
The PC and others devices are wifi connected
All seems OK
The rate is decreased (ii have a legacy 7 Mbit/sec and the rate is around 4000 kbit/sec; it is less than before when the modem is plugged to the principal plug but more far than now) but probably this is cause of some kind of resistance
-
I would shorten the length maybe.
Ensure the phone line signals are good.
Hope it works better for you now.
