Title: DNS-323 - 1.08 Ongoing Issue List
Post by: D-Link Multimedia on March 16, 2010, 11:59:09 AM
So to keep things simple for both Customers and D-Link I think there needs to be a simple post of the current issues listed by customers. We happen to have a popular forum for the NAS category and with that comes many duplicate posts on issues and excessive topics created pushing other issues out of clear view. So with that I have gone through some of the top posts and created a small spread of the issues that I see with 1.08.

If there is anything I have missed that was not listed please post that issue with as much information on replicating it including your environment and usage and it will be added to the list. Also if you have already created a topic for your issue that is not listed here, please post a link to that topic to be included here.

After reported I will remove your post once it is listed in this thread to keep the spam down. Feel free to talk about your issues in the threads listed.

Please note: Although I have listed these issues here, D-Link has not confirmed them all yet. As issues are confirmed this post will be updated and the issue will be addressed.

After a hard-drive failed in a Raid 1, replacing the failed drive and formatting it did not re-configure the raid correctly. It appears that sometimes the unit does not update the 'magic' HDD number in the flash and is still looking for an OLD number. There needs to be a better checking system for this before formatting.

There is no update at this time. Also only ISSUES will be listed here. USB and external hd's is not part of the units functionality and as such is not considered an issue.

This is now the second time I have had a drive fail on the supported list (500GB Maxtor STM3500320AS)
and dropping in a new unit fails to mirror.

Granted my DNS-323 is my oldest NAS. I also have a Thecus N2200, and a Thucus N4100Pro Raid 1/5/10 5 Drive unit.  I have had drive failures on the 2 drive Thecus N2200 using the same drives, and they raid right up.

I have to question if If Dlink is still supporting this unit?  I had also tried to drop a pair of new
Seagate 7200.12 1TB in there but no luck. Seems the drive list only goes up to .11 drives since it is
dated back in 2007!

I suppose maybe the Dlink DNS-323 is ready for e-cycle and time to upgrade?
There is no point in running Raid 1 if auto-sync is enabled on Raid 1 and it always fails!
I  have tried the same Maxtor drive, and I have tried a comparable 500GB Seagate drive on
the "verified list" as well....

Not sure raid 1 recovery ever actually worked at this point. :(

I have an issue after upgrading to 1.08 with NFS, the addon simply doesn't work at all. My ESX server is unable to connect to the NFS server addon running on the DNS-323 at all.

I had this working with funplug4 (sort of). ESX saw the NFS datastore and was able to connect to it. I also verified that the ESX server was able to write to the volume by creating some test folders. However, I had a problem with the server not being able to see anything on the NAS. I could create folders an directories, but was unable to see or browse through them after making them. If I connect using CIFS/Samba, I see the folders there.

I thought I would circumvent the issue by installing 1.08 firmware (was running 1.07) with the addon support of NFS. Reset to all factory defaults (setting up raid again was a complete nightmare because it kept telling me the disks were installed out of order - had to format them individually and was lucky I had no data on it), got raid backup, installed NFS addon, pressed the start button next to the addon entry and now nothing. ESX will not even connect to the NFS server. I have it cofigured witht he same IP as before. Has anyone else seen this problem with NFS addon and 1.08?

Ok, just tried mounting from my virtual fedora box to see if I could get a more verbose error to troubleshoot, here's the results:
[root@fedorabox]# mount.nfs 192.168.4.15:/mnt/HD_a2/Volume_1
/home/[username]/nasbox/ -w
/usr/sbin/start-statd: line 8: /sbin/rpc.statd: Permission denied
/usr/sbin/start-statd: line 8: /sbin/rpc.statd: Success
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified
**Below is the attempt with the option to keep locks local**
[root@fedorabox]# mount.nfs 192.168.4.15:/mnt/HD_a2/Volume_1
/home/[username]/nasbox/ -w -o nolock
mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting
192.168.4.15:/mnt/HD_a2/Volume_1

As you can see from the command prompt, I'm performing these actions with root super user. It certainly would appear as though the NFS server is not running on the NAS or the directory I'm trying to mound needs to be permissioned. Looks like I will have to reinstall funplug and try chmod on the dir to see if that works.

Your mount command is incorrect. You should not be mounting /mnt/HD_a2/Volume_1, it should simply be /mnt/HD_a2/. You are communicating over NFS, there is no reason to include the SMB name.

Also if you are using ESX make sure no rootsquash is enabled.

Unfortunately, I get the same results when I try to mount without the smb name:

[root@fedorabox]# mount.nfs 192.168.4.15:/mnt/HD_a2 /home/[username]/nasbox/ -w -o nolock
mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.4.15:/mnt/HD_a2/

I also tried without the local lock and tried read only.

Can you post a screenshot of your NFS settings page.

I've adjusted the host to contain the entire network block of addresses vs. the individual ESXi server which is 192.168.4.9. I've also created the vmfsnas folder instead of mounting the default directory /mnt/HD_a2 (that didn't work either when we tried it earlier). I've also rebooted the NAS box and the ESX server in that order.

I did find other people that got it to work here:

I will move my post there as it seems more appropriate and we can get better feed back from others using smiliar setup.

Dear moderators, I have a new issue we can add to the list (the problem should be relatively easy to reproduce). I installed NFS add (see posts above) and after toiling with ESX to connect, I decided to remove and re-install the addon. After doing that, the addon fails to start. Here's what I did to produce (as well as try to troubleshoot) the issue:

1) Removed the NFS addon (I don't remember if I stopped the addon first or if I just hit the delete button)
2) Reinstalled NFS addon and attempted to start it (failed to start)
3) Rebooted the encloser and tried to start again (failed to start)
4) Removing the addon, rebooted the enclosure, re-installed and rebooted again, then tried to restart the addon (failed to start).
5) Removed the addon, rebooted the enclosure, re-installed and attempted to start (still failed).
6) Upgraded to firmware version 1.09 and repeated these steps and it didn't seem to make a difference

Another user seems to have the issue here:

I was able to get past this issue by resetting the device back to factory defaults and reconfiguring it. NFS addon is running now.

I have just upgraded from FW 1.07 to FW 1.08. Now nothing can connect to my DNS-323, unless I manually go into the web interface, change the network link speed and save the changes. This happens every time I start the NAS. I have one Windows 7 PC, one Windows XPSP3 PC and a network media player. None of these devices can connect to the DNS-323 until I change the NAS link speed. Even if I just change the speed from auto, to 1Bit, apply and then go back to auto and save, the network can connect to the NAS again. I am not using jumbo frames. As all of my devices have this problem and it did not happen with FW1.07 it must be the new firmware.

Before I updated the FW I backed everything up. Formatted the two disks as EXT3 RAID 1 and then restored everything. I really don't want to go through the whole process and roll back to FW1.07 unless that's the only way to get the connections working again.

TIA

Neil

I am still running firmware 1.04 RevB and have the same problem, when I reboot the DNS I have to goto the web configuration : advanced : network access and re-save one share before I can access the DNS via SMB again. I do have a post about it here somewhere but a solution was never given.

I have two 500GB drives in a Raid 1 configuration. I have been noticing soft errors and the manual rebuild option is not available. When I try Scan Disk, it fails to do the scan disk and then reports my drives have 0kB free, and 0kB used. I am trying a restore to factory settings to see if that resolves the issues.

I still have the problem of not being able to scan the hard drives or perform a manual rebuild. I am using the firmware version 1.08. And once I restored to factory defaults even the UPnP scan locked up the server. I couldn't even use the power switch to restart. I had to physically unplug the power cord and plug it back in. I need the Mac fix in 1.08, but this is a ridiculous number of faults.

Please Help.
Thanks, Cliff.

They were RAID 1 drives. That was my backup, my main file storage, everything. Anyone have any suggestions. I have sent in a request to Customer Support. I can't figure out what happened. It must be a permissions issue that was caused when it was restarted with factory defaults. That's all I can think of. I tried pulling the drives out and putting them in a USB enclosure - they show up as 526 MB drives now with a single "backup" folder with nothing in it.

I just ran GParted on one of the drives. It seems that the DNS must have created another partition. There is one partition identified with 500 GB with 16 MB used, and one with 187 GB used. Very weird as I didn't think it was possible to have multiple partitions using the entire drive. Hopefully their Technical Support can guide me through setting this up. Since it shows up as a separate partition I'll try to mount that partition separately to see if that works. Then I can copy the files to another drive. We'll see what happens....

RAID 1 is a second copy. It is data mirroring. I do understand the differences between the RAID levels. It is specifically meant to cover physical hardware damages to one of the drives. It improves the reliability of the storage system by over 2 magnitudes. I do realize that if one deletes stuff from the drive - it gets deleted from both - but that is not the issue here.

You obviously don't really understand what RAID-1 is and is not.

By that you mean what? What is RAID 1 then if it is not data mirroring? Possibly you could provide references when you wish to help people.

RAID 1

RAID 1 mirrors the contents of the disks, making a form of 1:1 ratio real time mirroring. The contents of each disk in the array are identical to that of every other disk in the array. A RAID 1 array requires a minimum of two drives.

gunrunnerjohn,

I am very appreciative of you compiling a list for v1.08 firmware, so as to prioritize issues, so as to get them fixed.  (I have worked as a firmware engineer for many years, doing both servo, & controller code for HDD's, & ODD's, so totally get it!).

Please add to the list the bug which crept in after 1.06 which prevents anonymous and protected shares on the same NAS from working, i.e. "Accounts problem", post  http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10463.0

I really need this to work, so as to make things easy for my grandkids to use the NAS, to copy pictures in/out.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

By that you mean what? What is RAID 1 then if it is not data mirroring? Possibly you could provide references when you wish to help people.
The ONLY thing that RAID-1 protects you from is hardware failure of a disk drive!  Think about it.

1. If you delete a file/folder from the NAS, both copies are gone.
2. If you have a virus or malware trash the disk, both copies are gone.
3. If you have a controller failure, both copies are gone unless you have identical hardware to connect your drives.

RAID of any level is NOT backup.  It's primary purpose is to provide greater data availability in the event of a drive failure, that's it.  I'm not sure why this concept is so difficult to grasp.

Its not hard to understand - I stated that in my post. It improves the "hardware reliability". I also stated that it will not stop deletions, but that is not what occurred. By the way, you can use snapshots to create backups, all that you need to make sure is that your reliability is high enough. Hence, RAID 1. But if the controller kills both drives it is called a double fault - very few reliability applications take in to consideration multiple fault scenarios as they are considered very unlikely. Yes they do happen.

The issue, that I am finding out, is that the DNS-323 created a new file system when it should not have. It was not a virus or other issue that I have. I didn't know that it created a new file system until I went in with GParted with the drives in an USB enclosure.

The original problem was that the Beta bug regarding the Scan Disk is still there. It will not complete. Without it functioning, you can't perform the a file system check for soft or hard errors.

When I restarted I had no visibility at what happened other than my folders disappeared. It wasn't until I took the drives out and have put them into a USB enclosure to debug them that I found the second file system created. It created a second file system on the same physical drive using the same space - 500 GB. However, it realized that the 500 GB was used and so it has set the used space to 0 KB and the free space to 0 MB. In other words, when it restarted it saw the RAID 1 configuration, however, it seems it did not find the starting blocks for the existing filesystem. That in itself is another bug.

I have also found that I could not use the Manual Rebuild as it was greyed out. I don't know if  this is a known bug or not.

In any case there was no indication from the Status page that the drives were degraded in any way.

As a final bug, the Fan Control in Auto (Low, High, Off) mode does not seem to function properly as it stays off and the temperature increases to 45C - before I switched the Fan Control to Auto (Low, High).

In summary, 1.08 still seems to have a number of the bugs that were identified in the Beta build. I was under the impression that they were to be fixed prior to the release.

If you reset to factory defaults and manually reconfigure, it seems to fix the fan fault.  I had the same issue, that's what got it working properly again.

I don't trust the scandisk either.

I actually went from RAID-1 with my DNS-323 and DNS-321 to a single disk.  I'd rather have the two independent backups than a single RAID array.  I also went from EXT2 to EXT3 for added filesystem reliability.

The only RAID NAS I have is my Synology DS209, it's the primary network storage, the two D-Link NAS boxes are the backups for that.

Yes, now that they support ext3, I too will be going that way once I finish rebuilding. Given this latest issue, I am leaning toward either standard or jbod as well and then seeing if I can put snapshots on the opposite drive of just the stuff I need to keep.

gunrunnnerjohn, do you know if we can run an e2fsck on the DNS-323 remotely - i.e. from a Linux connected computer?

Thanks, Cliff.

Well, JBOD is not a good choice, if you lose either drive, you will almost surely lose all the data.  I'd go with separate volumes if you're going to keep both disks in the box.

I don't think there is any way to remotely access the internal drive to that level, at least I don't know of it.  That's one of the reasons I went for EXT3, it's a more robust filesystem, I figured it might be a bit better data protection.  The real way I plan on saving the data is simply by having several copies on different physical NAS boxes.  My primary NAS is backed up to a secondary one, then it is later backed up to the the 3rd level one.  I have three generations of the data, copied at different times, this should be reasonable protection.  I also have some older Ximeta NDAS drives that I do ad-hoc backups to at least once a month, other than that, they're off-line.

Just because I'm paranoid about my data, that doesn't mean they're not out to get me. :D

An update from DLink on when this will be fixed would be nice.

3. If you have a controller failure, both copies are gone unless you have identical hardware to connect your drives.

This is true only for hardware raid controller, DNS-323 use linux software raid, so you only need a linux box to recover your data.

True, but then most of the folks here don't have one of those either. :)

Of course, with a Windows EXT2/3 driver, you can also connect to Windows and recover data.  In any case, with proper backups, you wouldn't need to try to recover that data. ;)
Title: Fan power save settings revert to slow/fast after reboot
Post by: OlegMZ on May 18, 2010, 08:56:54 PM
I believe I'm not the first one to report this.
If I setup  powersave settings for Fan to Off/Slow/Fast everything works fine until next reboot. After reboot NAS config page still shows Off/Slow/Fast, but actually works as Slow/Fast and the fan never stops. Pushing Save Settings button on this page fixes the issue BTW (probably applying declared setting).
Special thanks for log message "Fan cannot stop. Please check the fan." Still wandering what exactly user is supposed to check in this case. Some ghost who is keeping rotating fan?  :)

When trying to access Bittorrent list, the message intermittently appears

Torrents are listed, but unable to add torrents.  (The Add button does nothing when adding from file)

Hello

I have just purchased a new DNS-323 (C1), upgraded to fw 1.08 and reset to factory defaults. I seem to have stepped into a couple of problems:

* Looks like NFS has this bug from the beta code:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5582.0

When NFS is running and a client has it mounted, eventually the DNS-323 hangs. Although it replies to pings, the web server is no longer accessible. The power button also stops working, the only way to power it down is disconnecting the cable :(
didn't measure the time, but it takes perhaps about 1h to hang.

Having the NFS daemon up and running but keeping the share unmounted in the client when not needed, seems to be fine by now, but I didn't test it thoroughly.

* Second problem:
When first formatting a drive (it was a 1.4TB 7200.11 Seagate Barracuda), the DNS-323 hung at 70% like in the former case. Checking the drive in my PC with SeaTools, I saw that it had bad sectors, so I replaced it. The point is: it really should return an error instead of just hang!

Thanks!

New FW version released 6/16/2010, v1.09.

I just bought this box and was having problems moving my iTunes library to
this drive.  Complaining about insufficient space even though its 1TB each
and unlimited access (no Quotas).  Realized I was running FW 1.01 and
found the lastest FW v1.09.  Installed it and resolved my problem.  Was also
having problem that would not stay connected.  With new FW, seems to
stay connected.

How about an option to inhibit the ability of the DNS-323 (and DNS-321 for that matter) from assuming the role of the master browser?  Since they seem to be somewhat pig-headed about it and don't participate in the standard master browser election, you usually end up with at least two master browsers.  This is not desirable and leads to issues with workgroup networking.

This is as simple as a check mark on the GUI to insert a single line in the smb.conf file to disable that Linux feature.  This doesn't seem to be that big a request...

I hate to have to hack the box to fix this simple issue...

I didn't see this issue mentioned on this thread so I'd like to get it added to the ongoing list since I'm affected by it.

The issue is described in this thread:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10317.0

Basically, when performing an incremental backup, empty folders are created on the backup volume with a single letter as the file folder name. No data is copied over.

Found another bug with the current 1.09 fw version. If I upload a file using FTP, the device timezone is ignored when setting the uploaded file's timestamps. I have the timezone set at GMT-4. If a file was originally created at 18:00 the files will have a creation time of 22:00 when copied to the DNS-323.
I could only make it work with one program (SyncBackSE). Using filezilla, no timestamps are preserved and the creation time is set to the device's current time (it doesn't ignore the timezone but it doesn't preserve the original timestamps either).
It thought it could be a problem with SyncBack so I set up a FreeNAS virtual machine as a test and it copied all files without issues.

There are no bugfixes in 1.0.9, only the feature for online backups was added.
Have you tried to mount NFS using UDP instead of TCP in the client? Now I have it this way, with automount and it seems more stable to me. But perhaps it is the auto(dis)mount.

Thanks for your answer. is this an official firmware ? because i only see version 1.08 on the website.

my client is mostly an mediaplayer(xtreamer) that i can't configure myself with tcp/udp.
the player works fine with other nfs shares and i sometimes see that the nfs addon on the dns-323 isn't loaded probably so i have to stop and start the daemon for it to work again.

i think i'll have to wait for a newer firmware or try to get an option for nfs on my player.

Post by: crimson on July 31, 2010, 04:32:39 AM
After some testing and playing i see that the fault is on the DNS-323 and not my player.

After booting the NAS NFS seems to active but after a little while the daemon seems to work not properly.
i can make a connection on tcp 2049 but i can't get a list of nfs shares from it.

after stopping and starting the add-on twice(one time a failure with starting) i can list the shares again but when i try to connect one time with my mediaplayer NFS on the DNS-323 seems to crash or something like that because again i can't get a list of the nfs shares.

again stopped/started the add-on and i can get a list of nfs shares.

my mediaplayer works perfectly with my neighbour nas through nfs, never having any problems.

Hope that NFS is fixed in a newer firmware because it's pretty unusable for me right know.

This has nothing to do with the DNS-323, it is a Windows "feature", at least in earlier versions. I have managed to create and copy directories and files starting with a period on the DNS-323 and copy them too so not sure why you're unable to.

You mention Linux home directories - so are you trying to do this from Linux or Windows?
I'm a little confused as to how you are creating the problem.

I'm on firmware version 1.08 - just as a quick test on Windows7 I've opened up one of the folders on my NAS - right click - new text document. Named it ".test.txt". No problems.

If I try to do that with a directory- Windows says "You must type a filename" - this is a Windows "feature". If I do it through the cmd interface, it works (i.e. mkdir \\nas\volume_1\.jamie).

Just to report that the issues I had after the upgrade of firmware to 1.08, specially the loss of access  to the DNS thru the mapped drives after the restart, got resolved by factory restore.

Data was all there after the factory restore. I just had to re-create the users and connect them to the specific folders.

All back to normal now! Thanks to all.

Well, after checking a bit, here are some problems:

1) Don't run scandisk. It causes access problems also in 1.08, and you have to restore to factory and set up the users and access manually all over again.

2) Quota settings are not working - it's always "unlimited" despite of putting quota limits to the users.

I don't have problems running Scandisk. Once it's finished you need to restart the DNS-323 because the drives are unmounted before they are checked. Also running funplug services such as SSH need to be stopped otherwise it will fail immediately. Presumably because the drive can't be unmounted.

But I have seen that IE allways seems to try to load a button image (btn-browse.png) when this happens, as can be seen in the bottom bar on the attached picture (status bar of IE).
Can this "button image" bee corrupt or what can be the problem? How can i fix it.

The problem happens both on Win 7 x64 and Win XP 32-bit.

When the problem appears nothing works in WebUI, I can not log out, go to settings...nothing
After I kill the window I can not log in att all to the DNS-323 via WebUI, so I have to hard restart it.

After I restart the DNS-323 by pressing the hardware button for 3seconds, all my torrents restarts from 0%

Does anyone have any ideas?
My 1Tb disk starts to get full, about 40Gb left, but I guess this should not induce the problem, unless it is some kind of unused cache.

Can only think of FW issue, BT addon issue or corrupt files in hidden dirs for NAS BT addon ?

I'd like to add to the bug list in version 1.08/1.09.  I was sucessfully using a Lexmark printer under 1.07 with my DNS-323 - it showed up in System Status under the USB devices section - in fact, I was using it attached to a powered hub, and THAT showed up too.  Now, under version 1.09, the USB devices say NONE.   Will doing a factory-defaults reset help here?

Thanks!

If you didn't do a factory default reset when you upgraded firmware, that would be my first step.  Also, don't restore a saved configuration, you have to start from scratch when you upgrade the firmware.  Your data is obviously not affected, but the configuration of the NAS is.

Thanks Gunrunner,

I knew I should have done that, as I think I'll have to reset some users and permissions too.   Oh well.  I'm currently copying 1TB of data BACK to the NAS, and it's gonna take a while, so I'll do the factory-reset tomorrow or Saturday and report back.  I've upgraded from two 1TB disks in RAID 1 to two 2TB hard drives in RAID 1, so upgrading the firmware was primarily to support these new disks.   I guess with all the extra features added since 1.06 or 1.07, a reset / reconfiguration makes the most sense,  but I wanted to make sure the drives were formatted, recognzied, and acessible first.

Just a side note about restoring the data - I placed one of the old drives in a E-SATA enclosure and used a program called EXT2 IFS For Windows to read the data, and do a standard Windows file copy back to the new VOLUME_1.

Hope it's okay to post >> http://www.fs-driver.org/index.html  (http://www.fs-driver.org/index.html) << not mine, but it helped me.  YMMV.

I have an alternate EXT2/EXT3 driver that runs for me under Windows 7 to read Linux disks.

I think you'll have better luck after the factory reset.

Shouldn't this be an ongoing issues in 1.09 now?

Anyway here's the issue...

If the DNS-323 is set to report the public ip address when using passive ftp, it reports the ip address that was entered when the ftp server was setup, rather than the public ip address at the time of the request.

If you enter the current public ip address when setting up the ftp server everything works, but if you have a dynamic public ip address, and that address changes, then you need to be aware of the change and  manually change the setting in the ftp server setup or passive ftp will not work.

This should be an easy fix.

1.Tried disabling Avira Antivir - samme issue (it did not halt on the browsebtn.png but it halted and did not show the torrents and i could not get to the log in page after that, as in last post)
2. Tried on another PC with win XP32 bit in IE (wired LAN) - same issue
3. Tried on win 7x64 with 32 bit IE browser (Wired+Wireless LAN) - same issue
4. Tried on win 7x64 with 64 bit IE browser browser (Wired+Wireless LAN) - same issue

Solved the problem.
Each time the above problem happened, I could not log in.
Hence i Could not restart the NAS from the web page.
Hence i made a "3-5 sec button push" on the NAS to shut it down.

Obviously shutting down the NAS hardwarewise is different from doing a "restart from the http-page".

Because after i made restart from the webpage...the torrent pages are displyaing fine again.
Very strange indeed?

Okay, I should have started my own thread here, but I think this is a serious bug in that "traditional" USB is now officially BROKEN on the DNS-323, just like it is/was on the DIR-655 that I own.  Why?  I'll tell ya why... SHAREPORT!

After resetting things, I noticed my previously-recognized LEXMARK printer was STILL NO LONGER being recognized, so I took a chance, installed the shareport add-on and client to one computer, and BINGO, I can print again! The web interface of the DNS-323 STILL says that NO devices are connected, but Shareport sees my Lexmark Z600 series [an older model I know, but there are actually Windows 7 drivers for it], and lets me print to it.  The shareport and drivers actually allow for full bi-directional communication with the printer, so that's actually good - but I had a good thing going earlier too!

I wanted to avoid extra client software on my computers, but if that's what it takes, D-Link....  I'll play the game for now.

Anyone successful using Firmware 1.09 with a Lexmark Z600/z605?  Any other "printers" showing up as NONE in the web interface.  Or, even though the WEBUI says None, things work normally anyway?

 ???

Well, I had to abandon the DNS-323 print server, seems there's a memory leak in the LPD support in Windows 7, so after a couple of days, the spooler was several gigabytes!  I decided that wasn't going to do the trick...

What is your alternate EXT2/EXT3 driver?  Ext2IFS hasn't been working for me since I upgraded my firmware and reformatted.

Ex2FSD http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd/) is the one I use, I had problems with Ext2IFS didn't work for me with Windows 7.

Download fw1.09. Bittorrent "seems" to work okay in that version. Tried it once. But then I found that it started wreaking havoc with my drives throughput dropped down to under 1MB/s and the NAS would become unresponsive. Removed the add-on and all was good again. Go figure. Not bothering with any extras because they just are too buggy for my taste. For me, having this NAS is only a stopgap solution until I get a Synology box in place.

I'm not sure if this is wrt to v 1.08 or 1.09...

I recently switched my drive from WD15EARS (crappy advanced format) to WD2001FASS.

I also upgraded from firmware 1.07 to 1.09 (in order to support EXT3 and 2TB).

It used to be that the right bay was disk 1 and the left bay was disk 2.

Every forum entry I read indicated that it is imperative that you install your drive in bay 1 (the right bay) but after firmware v1.09 the bays are renamed to simply left and right.

If there are no other drives installed and you have just installed a virgin drive in the right bay, it is NOT detected.

I had to shut down and install the drive in the left bay before I was prompted to format it.

BTW, I have found this forum very informative.

Hi,

I have 2 DNS-323 units and for some reason only 1 can been seen under the Network as well as under Device Manager.  It use to show 2 units however something must have happend.  I can still use the unit and it can be found by using Dlink easy search utility however I would like to have the unit appear again under the network and Device Manager.  Can anyone help? if there is a problem with the electric componet can I get the part ordered and fix it myself. The unit is out of warranty and I would really like to fix this.

Which operating system?? Do you mean 'Devices & Printers' rather than Device Manager (because I cannot think that a DNS-323 is ever going to show up in Device Manager)??

On the contrary, it can show up in Device Manager even in Windows 7.

I'm intrigued because I hadn't realised that Device Manager could show networked devices. How does one go about getting them to appear??

I believe I have found a bug when converting from a single drive to a RAID1 pair (as I discussed in my thread at http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=12964.0). I don't know which firmware version this bug appeared, but in my current 1.08 config:

When converting a single drive configuration to a RAID1 pair, the right drive is always formatted, regardless of which drive has data and which drive is new.

This was with 2 identical drives, bought at the same time with serial numbers within close proximity to each other.
