Windows XP crashes when renaming a folder.
« on: September 11, 2009, 07:33:44 AM »

When a drive is mapped to the DNS-323 with admin rights and a new folder is created or an attempt to rename a folder is in progress it causes Windows XP to crash.

Detailed info:
Windows XP Service Pack 3
All updates have been installed.

Could there be a conflict with a driver?

Firstly - it doesn't happen on my system, which, like yours, is XP SP3 (XP Pro by the way, you don't specify) with all the updates.

What do you mean when you say Windows crashes?  Blue screen? Reboot?

Have you tried this creating new folders/renaming folders on a share on another Windows system?

It's doubtful that it would be a driver - there is no drivers specific to the DNS-323 - it does go through your network stack so it will use the network card driver, etc., but if that were the cause then I would expect crashes in the test I suggested above.

Even though the DNS-323 is running linux, Windows does not really know that it is not talking to another windows system, because of the SAMBA daemon running on the DNS-323 - it's not completely transparent, but most of the issues are known and repeatable and I believe relate to permissions and attributes.

Thanks for the input.

It is only happening on 1 pc.
This has happened before, but Windows updates took care of it.

Now all Windows updates are installed and I still receive the blue screen of death.

The system is running Windows XP Professional with SP3
The PC that is crashing is on a different IP segment than the DNS-323
My next test is to place the PC on the same segment as the DNS-323.
I can't imagine that it would make much of a difference.

Define "ip segment" - if you refer to logical network - you'd have to have a router in between the two for them to communicate, and I agree that should not cause Windows to bluescreen.  Are you able to see the text of the bluescreen?  What does it say?  There have been a couple of Windows patches giving problems recently, but as far as I know these were all Vista or Vista-64 related.
