Ugh  >:(, I got everything dialed in an set up with DHCP reservations, DMZ for my Ooma, and port forwarding and sure enough, the NTP server is off by 4 minutes.  No matter how many times I reboot, It's always 4 minutes behind.  This results in a loss of connection with any secure site.

Can you enter in custom NTP server addresses? Try time.nist.gov?
One thing you can try, set the time with you PC, then disconnect that WAN cable and all other LAN cables. Just leave the PC connected and see if the time maintains or slowly looses it. Wondering if there is an issue with your router or time queries coming from the modem.

I tried time.nist.gov and got the same result.  I'm still four minutes behind and no secure websites load.  I'll stick with manually setting the time and see how that goes.  Currently I'm 19 seconds fast and secure websites load.  The trouble with manually setting the time is you have to account for roughly 90 seconds between the time you press reboot and the router is back up and running.  If you just copy the computers time settings, the time will still be off by 80-120 seconds and secure websites will refuse to load.  I think the approx. 4 minutes off when using NTP servers is the result of the routers having to reboot plus some lag in coming online and communicating with the NTP server used.

I would contact DLink and ask about this...Really sounds like there is a time problem in FW.
Only other way to help narrow it down would be test another 827 router or different model.  :-\

::)  Sorry FurryNutz, I think the problem was actually with my computer and its synchronization with time.windows.com.  I just went into the clock settings of my Windows 7 computer and synchronized with time.windows.com and surprise, surprise it was four minutes off.

:o I never use that url for time. I always use time.nist.gov or time-b.nist.gov for PCs and devices.

Good that you found the issue.  ;)

Now maybe you can enjoy your 827 now?  ::)

Well, this router has been an epic fail.  If I'm stable for a few days, it's a miracle.  I think I maybe managed two days of stable connectivity this time around.  I don't know what the problem is, since I've synced both my pc and my router with the NTP server ntp1.dlink.com.  I've lost the ability to connect through any kind of secure method.  As long as I'm not directly connected via an ethernet cable to the router, I can use secure methods of transmission.  However, anything linked up directly to the router cannot obtain internet connectivity if it's going through some kind of secure transmission (ie. FTPS, HTTPS, any VPN protocol).

Why do we have someone take a look at your router settings with you and let see if we can figure out whats going on here sir?  ??? I think we need to review the settings and information and see whats going on there. This seems to be the only one here that is having issues and seems like it could be a configuration issue. Let me know if we can plan a remote session with you via teamviewer.

Well, I don't want any settings changed unless I have another problem.  I was following the guide written by AquaManiac http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=45096.0.  I think the problem maybe was in step 2 where they state to "SETUP-->NETWORK SETTINGS-->  DHCP SERVER SETTINGS: Left the defaults except for the following: enabled NetBIOS announcement and selected the Broadcast only option for the NetBIOS node type."  I changed this to "Learn NetBIOS from WAN."  Since then, things have been stable.  I'll post an update after I pass a reasonable up time.

Usually NetBios is not used much any more. Is there if ISP happen to provide services for it however it's OFF by default.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

:'( I hope this fixed it.  However, now my father is really mad, since he has nowhere near the tolerance I have for these problems.  The DNS relay is not working on this router.  Fortunately, someone else had the exact same problems as my father and me (we both have the DIR-827) with a different router ( ASUS RT-N66U).  He said this:

"Long story short: The current Asus firmware (3.0.0.4.260) does not allow disabling of DNS Relay, which seems to be an issue. I was getting many timeouts and "server not found" errors while browsing the web. This was not happening while I was connected directly to the cable modem; only when the router was installed. Also, it was happening over a wired connection, so it wasn't a wireless issue. To get around it, I manually entered my ISP's primary DNS IP into the router's LAN settings page. That updated the primary DNS IP on my PC's network settings from 192.168.1.1 to 75.75.75.75 (Comcast). Everything started working beautifully after that."

In the DIR-827 we can disable the DNS relay function, so after updating my manual internet connection options with the primary and secondary DNS servers from my status page under the WAN section,  I disabled the DNS relay function.  Now I can see SSL web pages in addition to non-SSL pages.

Have you considered upgrading to a Motorola SB 6 series cable modem? I'm wondering if the 5 series could also be and issue here. DNS relay should be working. Your the first person to mention that disabling DNS relay and inputing manual DNS addresses on the router seems to help or fix this. There is a possible issue with FW however to really test this would need to try a different modem. All the routers i've tested cept for the 827, DNS relay has worked either ON or OFF and using SB 6 series modems. There was one build on the DGL-4500 and DIR-855 years back that fixed a DNS relay issue and hasn't been seen since. The 827 and 857 are close in core HW and FW so I presume I don't think there would be any issues. Anything possible though.

I would check with Charter to see if they employ any connection boosters or anything out of the ordinary. I would test a different modem with the 827 to see if DNS relay exhibits the same thing. Ask for a more recent or better modem then the 5 Series. Possible this could be a ISP issue. When was the last time your ISP modem was updated or replaced by what you have now?

Curious, is this the first time you have been having problems with some secure web pages loading. You've had this router for a while now haven't you? Was it working when you first got it or doing the same thing back then?

Well, I've been stable for just over 22 days  ;D with the DNS relay disabled and the DNS servers manually entered.  The 5 series Motorola modem is mine (not renting). and I'll upgrade to a 6 series Motorola when this one dies.  This issue with secure web pages not loading has always been a problem from day one.  That's why I put the DIR-827 back in it's box for several months.  Also, yes, I've had the DIR-827 for 13 months now.  Since, I've never managed to have a stable connection for more than a week without rebooting, I've made up my mind that the DNS relay is the problem.  Until I have some other problem with my network, I'll consider this issue closed for the time.
