Title: DCS-930L - Firmware Wishlist
Post by: JavaLawyer on August 16, 2011, 04:18:19 AM
Now that the DCS-930 has a dedicated board, we can restart our firmware wishlist.

It would be oh-so-nice if the ftp filename Date/Time Suffix would include a bit of segmenting punctuation, so that instead of:
DCS-930L_2011090114562601.jpg
we could have
DCS-930L_20110901_14562601.jpg
or
DCS-930L_2011.0901.1456.2601.jpg
for easier readability

I hope the dlink developers read this!

It would be nice if the status panel could indicate how many connections of what type are being served.

Upon motion detection (scheduled!), then ftp multiple images, pre- and post-trigger, just like the email does.

Please, have Status page (http://x.x.x.x/stsdev.htm) indicate summary of reporting status, i.e. is email or ftp enabled, is motion detection enabled.
It should be easy to at least have a row if numbers.
And, make the time readout REAL - the time shown appears to be a javascript clock that stops and starts, so it is not truly indicating the status of the camera.

Please provide a choice of 2 fps in the Video panel (currently 1,5,7,15,20,[30]) - perhaps could be 1,2,4,8,15,...
The gap from 1 to 5 is quite large, and 1 is just a tad jerky.
Title: Re: DCS-930L Firmware Wishlist
Post by: acellier on September 04, 2011, 04:22:18 PM
The request for 2 fps video rate should have said "also in motion detector + ftp, or + email, mode"

General - Status page containing the number and type of connections currently served AND ACTUAL TIME OR OPERATIONAL STATUS -
currently, a javascript keeps time incrementing making it appear the camera is connected even when powered off.

Add a specific control for user language
(the French menus after firmware update were a bit of confusion!)
Or at least a help comment on the firmware page, about need to restart after updating!
But, what if I WERE French?

I will  put this on the top of the list:

•Motion Detection - Motion detection email on a user defined schedule

My use case: I want to monitor my home while the kids are at school, so that they return to safe home.

The user define schedule in my case is M-F from 9 AM to 3 PM and don't want to be flooded with motion detection e-mail alerts at other times, when we are home.

Security:  Allow userid for the DCS-930L be defined as a "view only" level, that is can not view or modify settings.

This would be nice also for the MyDLink site but that is not a firmware issue......RDK

This item was previously added to the mydlink wishlist (i.e. request for a guest account with no access to the DCS-XXX settings)

JavaLawyer.....OK for the DLink web site.  However, I was requesting a "view video only" account on the DLink Camera itself.  They allow for setting up accounts, but those accounts are "all powerful", I'd like an option for a "view video only" type so local users could view the camera video but not be able to mess with the settings.......RDK

I concur for both email and ftp.  I'm putting our camera at our campground which is only open weekends and don't want to have to remember to turn it on and off.

Not sure how to categorize this:

For the FTP option, Image frequency 1 sec, File Date/Time suffix, create subfolder by 1 day.  This would create a very large folder size.  Even large multiple folders over an extended period of time.

- Request an option to delete previous folder?  or keep only 24 hours of xx hours then overwrite older files?

I have just discovered that I CAN create additional ID/PW combinations and that they DO NOT have "admin" authority to access and change the camera setting.  So please remove that item from your list.

Also I strongly second the requests for a combined Schedule and Motion Detection trigger for FTP and E-Mails.

Thanks....RDK

Motion Detection: Add delay interval for emails to prevent the camera from sending too many emails within a short time span (i.e. only send a motion detection email if 5 or 10 minutes have passed from last email alert)

Already included...

Motion Detection - User defined minimal interval between motion detection emails (to avoid flood of emails during a prolonged motion detection event) (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 minutes)

Can you please, please add an option to bump up the wireless power? If it's beta I'm willing to test it. : )

Turns out I can't use wireless because it can't detect my network (unless in the same room). I've tried changing channels, upping my router's transmission power (mW). No wireless joy for me.

Unfortunately, this list is only for changes impacting firmware. Increasing the wireless power may cross into the realm of hardware and may impact the technical specifications.  ???

I sure helps to get those extra angles when I'm in a hurry to shove the webcam into a dove's nest and connect the power and ethernet, without spooking them so much that they abandon the eggs. ;D

  • [Bug] Password - Passwords created that exceed the maximum length (8 characters) are not rejected, only the first 8 characters are accepted (firmware should reject the password and generate an error message)

I got hit with the same issue but in all fairness, the fieldbox for setting the password is only 8 characters long and your web browser won't let you type any further- if you press keys on your keyboard it just doesn't go anywhere! There's a message above which says passwords must be 6-8 characters if I recall correctly. That being said, I don't understand why the 930L only supports 8 letters yet the 942L supports more!

The DCS-932L has the same limitation. Even though the warning text is present, there's no overt message if you try to type further. There were many users who couldn't log into their DCS-93X because they thought there 9+ length password was accepted, when in fact, just the first 8 characters were saved.[/list]

I know I may be dreaming here to ask for this given its in the more expensive 942L model but would it be possible too get some kind of OSD as well with a time and date stamp on the live feed when viewed on the iOS app? This is a sure way of knowing whether or not there are new images loaded, adds detail to the screenshots, etc. doesn't have to be super fancy but happy with date and time, or if feeling really generous, camera name and or custom message as well.

Just thought I'd poke my head in here to see if there were any release notes accompanying the 1.06 firmware release that I pushed out to all 6 of my cameras moments ago.

Nope!   >:(

I also see that the wishlist continues to grow and that motion detection on a schedule still eludes us after 1.5 years!  ???

(sigh) Quite frustrating. All in all though, all 6 cameras are still running strong.

Motion detection - as well as reducing the frequency of e-mails, could you also please make the setting apply to FTP posts? Reducing the sensitivity means that some events are missed, but when a trigger occurs there are still a flood of images to look through, up to seven per second, whereas one every second or two would be plenty.

Thanks,
Tony Heaton.

1) Fix the Time-zone issue.  Every time you change the timezone the device gets confused.

2) The other issue is that I wish these supported secure logins, AFAIK they are plain text, not over SSL.
This should be a quick fix to allow this over SSL, port 443...

3) Add a feature that would allow motion detect only during certain hours, like so many other vendors do (like even FosCam).

I would like the feature that gives some information on in what area movement is detected in the email or in the acctual image.
I guess the hardware in the camera is not powerfull to manipulate the image, but writing a text string in the email in what block detection is over the threshold should work.

You can change the time zone, or the offset, then change it back, then hit save, and it will have the wrong time, or it will display the correct time on that page, until you start watching video, and then the Video time is off...  same on the DCS-930L.  If syncing to say north-america.pool.ntp.org (or another verified working varient) it NEVER syncs to the right time (it does on all windows boxes and any other device I ever tried).

Hello,

I noticed that when FTP upload is in use in case of motion detection, camera is uploading images every 2-3 seconds. I this could have two reasons - or just fixed fps, or FTP connection is taking some time; most probably to upload each photo camera is opening an FTP connection and closing. So would be nice to keep FTP connection open for some period, i.e. motion detection - open FTP - upload X photos - no motion for 30 seconds - close FTP.

Thanks.

I'm not sure I fully understand what you are proposing here. Are you suggesting the FTP session should remain open until all images from the motion detection event are pushed to the server? (rather than open/close, open/close, open/close, etc).

I can't find this feature in the compiled list nor in my device (1.06).

Upon motion detection (scheduled!), then ftp multiple images, pre- and post-trigger, just like the email does.

I would like to request that the DCS-930L firmware support ftps in a future release.  Yahoo is disabling ftp Feb 19, 2013...so my webcam feed from the dCS-930L magically disappears on that date.
Thanks,

Is there a model in your product line that will allow me to send email on motion detection during a specified schedule? This product is worthless without that feature. Not sure what this product is for otherwise. The schedule feature sends pictures at a specified interval. Does one really expect the user to troll through hundreds of emails daily to see if anything happened? Or, if I set it to motion detection. Is it for my own amusement to take random photos of me while at home and send useless emails to myself?

The most troubling aspect is I just purchased this product 3-20-2013. nearly 2 years after original posts requesting D-Link to resolve this issue and the issue still exists! Exactly what does D-Link garner from its forums. This puts a bad taste in my mouth about the whole D-Link product line. Look for these products to be shipped back to your inventory. Very dismal performance D-Link

One thing I do not like in the wireless setup page is that it shows the pre-shared key that you previously entered in plain text.  None of my other WiFi connected devices (nor does my router) do this - they all just show dots instead for security purposes so that your WiFi network password is never displayed.

I'd like the 930 to do this as well.

You would be better served by buying an updated camera that has these features.

For real - Nothing is going to happen for a 930L.

Ok, me again. I'm using the ftp time scheduled upload to create frames for a time-lapse movie. This works nicely but the sky is strongly overexposed (i.e. often just plain white). I tried adjusting the brightness, but this appears not to affect the exposure - only the jpeg processing. This means that I don't see the clouds any better - the sky just becomes a bit more grey. I would like to be able to adjust the camera exposure. I presume it is a fixed aperture, so this would mean adjusting the exposure time. The camera obviously sets this automatically: it would be great to have a similar dropdown to the brightness/contrast controls allowing step adjustments to the exposure (-5 to +5, probably in 0.5 EV units, so -2.5 to +2.5 EV).

Not sure if the intent is already on the wish list but here is my request.

Going to ftp, motion detection automatically saves a image at a user defined level. For example, motion detected, camera then sends via ftp to storage 1 image every x seconds for x minutes then resets. This will give us a kind of live view or video recording as frames when motion is detected. Something similar to the email but I would set it to record 1 frame a second for 3 minutes giving me 240 images for one motion detection event.

Storage on a NAS is cheap!

At that rate, the request might as well be the ability to FTP video for a user defined interval following a motion detection event.  ;)

WOW, I finally had time to check out the (motion detection triggered) ftp frame rate (/interval) controls in the 1.09 firmware.
The controls now work!
I tried setting for 1,2, or 3 fps; or 2 second intervals - all work at long last.
This is with a remote (across the continent) ftp server.

Also. we have not experienced a "zero-byte" file since installing the new firmware 3 weeks ago.

Title: Re: DCS-930L - Firmware Wishlist - FTP Test Message
Post by: acellier on February 12, 2014, 01:32:29 PM
Some background:
When one clicks in Setup/FTP to send an FTP Test Message, the camera stores the test message in the server at "Host Name"+"Path".
(incidentally, explicitly placing a "/" at the beginning of Path *appears* to be optional under v1.09).
However, before writing the TestMessage image to the server, the camera generates a Date/Time Suffix folder (at least, when that option is selected) named as the appropriate time interval inside the appropriate Day folder. If there are no motion triggers during that interval, then this folder remains empty. This can lead to confusion.

Recommendation: Test Message should go into the new created folder; or, do not create new folder, in response to TestMessage request.

This behavior was discovered while reviewing server logs, during troubleshooting of the inability of DCS-930L cameras to write to named domain as Host Name (workaround: numeric IP).

Can we have a log file or does onboard memory size not allow this.

General request:

Can we have an option to make the green indicator light flash anytime the camera is being viewed remotely, internal on the network, or both?  I see it flashes when I access via a hardwired LAN, but I'd also like the option for it to flash when someone from the outside is viewing it remotely.

Basically, steady light = no one viewing.  Flashing light = someone, somewhere, viewing.  Or maybe even different flash patterns to indicate if being viewed by a remote user or one on the wifi network.

Thanks for considering.

Thank you

Hello,

I've owned a DCS-930L for a while now and only lately I've noticed something bothersome.
I've always viewed the camera from video (ActiveX for example). And anytime I viewed it - the camera LED was blinking. It was the feature that gave me a great feeling of security - If someone was watching my camera and managed to bruteforce the password - at least I'd known they are watching and I could turn the camera off.

I know the chances someone would do that are extremely low, but this feature was the only thing that made me calm and allowed me to freely use the cameras.

So the issue is that I found out it is possible to access the cgi (/image/jpeg.cgi) and view it, and the camera's LED won't blink.

I would like to ask if it is possible to implement a feature that would make the camera blink whenever someone is connected to it at all (such as to any page via the browser)? It would make me, and I bet other users, feel more secure. I'm the only one who has access to the camera so it will make me feel at much ease knowing it will blink when someone else is.

Thank you for your time reading my post. I would be very happy to receive any comment from the D-LINK team or the community.

P.S.
Is the source code of the firmware available somewhere? Or is it completely closed  :-[?
Anyway thank you again, I'm happy to see the community here and the available, recent (!) updates ;D

Very many thanks for the latest 1.11 firmware - the minimum FTP post interval has completely solved my problems of being swamped with images on motion detection. Congratulations on a job well done.

I guess my biggest request would be the WiFi password thing.  Good wpa passwords should have spaces and punctuation... so I would request:

wpa password to should allow non alphanumeric characters (such as spaces, commas, apostrophes, periods, questions marks and the like)

It's hard to discern the referenced noise from that video, as most recording devices will pick up some form of ambient noise.  :-\

If that's the case, then the delta could be a HW issue.
