Another DIR-635 dropping connections!
« on: April 01, 2012, 02:49:50 AM »

Hi everone!

I know there are many threads about this, but i wanted to have all information regarding MY problem, in one place, insted of hi-jacking other threads with my problem.  :)

My router keeps dropping the wifi, its not regular, last time (yesterday) it was working fine about 6 houres before my phone disconnected and couldnt connect. It said approving, getting IP and then it just disconnects (i have a samsung galaxy s2 with android 4), my girlfriends iphone also dropped, my computer couldnt connect. So i used a laptop with cable to the router and got the log. Didnt see any weird things i think. I put the log in the bottom of this post.  :)

I have a router that i got from my ADSL supplier, this is very bad range on wifi so i have now connected the D-link to a port on that one, and using d-link for wireless connections.

The routers FW is 1.09

In the Setup > Wireless settings:

I have searched for other hotspots and changed my channel to get as far away from the other used channels. Im now using channel 1 and the closest hotspot is at channel 5. The wireless channel is at 2,412 ghz channel 1, 802.11 mode is mixed n,g,b, channel width is auto 20/40, transmission rate is best (automatic), and its visible.
Securitymode is WPA, wpa-mode: wpa2 only

In Setup > Network settings:

DHCP server is active, DNS relay was turned on, but tried to turn of, but disconnects anyway, tryed to  reserve ip adresses for all units but still dropping. The always broadcast is on, tryed to turn it of but disconnects anyway.

In Setup > Advanced Network:

UPnP is turned on, and multicast streams is on.

In Setup > Advanced wireless:

Transmit power: Low (got very good coverage in my house still)
802,11d enable: Not enabled
WMM enable: Enabled
Short GI: Enabled

In the Advanced > QOS Engine:

Enable QoS Engine : Enabled
Automatic Classification : Enabled
Dynamic Fragmentation : Enabled
Automatic Uplink Speed : Enabled
Measured Uplink Speed : 784  kbps
Manual Uplink Speed : kbps   <<
Connection Type : Auto-detect
Detected xDSL Or Other Frame Relay Network : Yes

The Dynamic DNS is not enabled.

The log from the wireless:

Wireless Statistics

Sent :    2633552
Received :    1035262

TX Packets Dropped :    1298
Errors :    26782

Hope anyone have any good tip for me, im about to throw this **** out the window! (And yes, its many years since i bought it, probably 5-6 years). At first it worked very well. But then started to drop out, and have been doing that last years, but havent been used. But my router delivered from my adsl supplier has a ****ty range on the wifi, so instead of buyng a new wifi router i want to try to fix this if its possoible. Think i payed over $200 when i bought it..! :-/

So i hope i can get it to work and save some money :)

Log from the router in the next post -->

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
The hardware verson is: A1

What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
FW verson is 1.09

What region are you located?
Norway, Møre og Romsdal

Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
All my devices are wireless connected to the router

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
I have DSL/ADSL

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
The ISP modem/router is a Thomson TG784 (Think its a router with modem)

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
Thomson TG784

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

The IP adress under the WAN is: 192.168.1.110
The Gateway is the IP adress for the Thomson router (192.168.1.1)

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Now its using all, in Auto mode

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Set to auto 20/40

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Securitymode is WPA, wpa-mode: wpa2 only

What wireless devices do you have connected?
A stationary computer (wifi)
2 laptops (wifi)
One Samsung Galaxxy S2 and one Iphone 4 (wifi)
And one IP camera (wifi)

Any cordless house phones?
No cordless phones

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
There are a few, have checked the channels, and now using channel 1, the closest one is at channel 5

Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Thanks, as you see i have wrote in red, all the answers.
Will try all you suggested and see what happends.

Thanks again! :-)

I recommend trying to either bridge the DSL modem or use the DMZ if it has this option in the modem and input the IP address the 635 routers gets from the modem and put that in the DMZ.
Does the DSL modem have a wifi radio as well?

Try some of the single or G and N modes and test on the 635.

Keep us posted.

I have now turned off everything you listed, but not changed the G,N,B mode. Will se if any of that i have done now works first. Will come back with the result.

Im not sure i know what the DMZ is? Can you explain that?

My Thomson modem has a wifi radio, i have deactivated this as i use the wifi from the D-link.

The problem with the Thomson, is that it is very hard to find the correct menu, its not user friendly AT ALL! And some menues i think are locked from my ISP, so i cant change everything i want. I HAte this modem/router.

EDIT: Actually, i can configer the router again, using bridge, or PPP, and there is also a profile called Tussa (my ISP's name), but im afraid of destroi something so i dont have any internet :P

Maybe i could use the D-link as a modem and a router, and remove the Thomson? Or that might not work  :-\

You have to use the Thompson as the ISP modem. DLink routers can't perform as Modems.

You also need to change the mode from Mixed all modes to single mode G or mixed G and N to test.

I recommend contacting the ISP to help you bridge the modem correctly.

You have to use the Thompson as the ISP modem. DLink routers can't perform as Modems.

You also need to change the mode from Mixed all modes to single mode G or mixed G and N to test.

I recommend contacting the ISP to help you bridge the modem correctly.

Okay,

But when bridged, i need the wifi on the ISP modem to connect with the wifi on the D-link, and the modem only works as a modem, not a router?

I hope it will work now, but time will show.

Will get back with the results.

Thank you so much!  :)

You only need the modem to be just a modem, the wifi and router on the modem need to be turned off. Let the 635 router handle all the router and wifi management.

If you dont use B mode then I recommend changing the modes from mixed all to G and N. This will help the WiFi radio and make it a bit more stable.

Glad it's working for you.
