Here is a simple question resulting from my problem: How to I reset the root user password, and how do I change the file permissions (for a whole directory, if possible) from the DNS console?

If you reset to factory configuration, that should include all permissions and passwords.

Thank you VERY much for this post suggesting to Reset to Default Settings without impacting all of the data on my DNS-323 drives so that I could access my files.  This solution also resolved an access problem that I was having on my new WIN7 PC.  I was able to map the drive but didn't have the permissions to access it.  Windows Explorer would just sit and spin for a long time and then return an error, but not any longer.  I've spent the past 3 Days trying to resolve this issue and D-Link Phone support was no help either.  THANK YOU!
