  • Macbook Pro, OS X 10.9 (Mavericks)
  • DIR-655, Hardware rev. B1, Firmware rev. 2.05
  • Western Digital Elements Desktop 2 TB Harddrive (link)
The MBP is connected to the DIR-655 via WAN (i've also tried LAN without any change), and the HDD is connected via USB. The harddrive has its own power supply and works normally when connected via USB to the MBP

I've tried following SharePort versions, including SX Virtual Link:

  • SharePortUtility_101b05_macos106_multi_20100525 - Result = Crash upon open
  • ShareportUtility_111_macos107_multi_20120329 - Result = Crash upon open
  • mac_shareport_utility_300 - Result = Doesn't find harddrive ("No device serves were found...")
  • SharePortPlus_V420R1_Mac - Result = Doesn't find harddrive ("No device serves were found...")
  • DIR-655_REVB_SHAREPORT_PLUS_UTILITY_4.20_MAC - Result = Doesn't find harddrive ("No device serves were found...")
  • sx-virtual_link_mac_3120 - Result = Doesn't find harddrive ("No device serves were found...")

I have no idea of getting this to work  ???

Any solutions?

Any chance of trying a small size drive? 500Gb is about the max support size.

I can try this with my 655 v2.11 and Mac Book this evening and see...

Thanks for the reply  :)

I've just tried with a 32GB SanDisk USB pen, ExFAT formatted, but that doesn't show up either in SharePort Plus 4.2 or SX Virtual Link

NTFS is only supported format for drives connected to the router using SP.

Reformatted to NTFS with Disk Utility, and plugged in the DIR-655 again = still doesn't show up

NTFS 32Gb USB and v4.20 SP?

Before I recommend any FW updates, let me try my 655 with v2.11 and OSX 10.9 this evening and I'll report back. I suppose you don't have an older version of OSX loaded to you? I have 10.9 and 10.7.5 I'll be testing...

NTFS 32Gb USB and v4.20 SP?

Yup.

I actually tried to update the FW to 2.11 but got an error doing so. Also the release notes only said something about 'Enhanced IPv6' and 'UPnP Security Vulnerabilities Addressed' so I didn't thought to much about it.

I have no other version than 10.9, but I have Windows 7 Bootcamp'ed - nonetheless I'm only going to use SharePort with Mac OS X, so trying to make it work with Windows doesn't change anything i guess.

Thanks for taking the time to test, I really appreciate it.

Ok, l'll check on this when I get home. I'll post my results.

250GB NTFS USB external drive connected to DIR-655 B1 v2.11
Mac Book Pro 2007 LAN wire connected to DIR-655

OSX 10.7.5:

Was able to watch a .avi file from the drive in Quick Time.

OSX 10.9:

I noticed that I had to open the main drive on OSX to see the SP drive. Once I selected it, it mounted the desktop icon.

Was able to watch a .avi file from the drive in Quick Time.

My USB drive has external power so I connected the power as well so the drive was getting what it needed.

Good to see that it works with Mac OS X 10.9, but unfortunately I don't have any USB drive with <500 GB, so I guess it's not going to work at all, though I might update the firmware and follow your brief guide.

Is there any documentation on the max supported size of 500GB?

Not much information, just what I've been told by D-Link and users experiences.

One thing to consider as well, performance on the USB port is not the greatest. Yes it works well however in regards to large size drives, the router would need to catalog everything on this large drive and should it become full, it would take a long time for the router to complete any sort of cataloging if you make changes or add files. I personally would not recommend using a large size drive in this case. If you need something like a large size drive to be shared, I recommend sharing the USB drive out on the online dedicated PC, use a NAS device instead or use a USB to network adapter.

Thank you for the input and as said, I really appreciate it. I will consider getting a dedicated NAS device instead.

Hope you find something that works for you. Check out the DNS series NAS. Can post in any of those forums for help and information before buying.  :)

Good Luck.
