Motion detection DCS-936L
« on: April 02, 2017, 05:45:05 AM »

After hours of experimentation with my DCS-936L, I have discovered a setup that works, in a limited fashion. My 936L produced multiple false detections in almost every location and sensitivity setting I tried. My conclusion was - this camera is UNUSABLE FOR MOTION DETECTION. However, I kept experimenting and came up with this solution.
This camera cannot be used near a window or be aimed outdoors if you are using motion detection. If the camera is aimed in a room with little or no outside lighting, it can be adjusted to provide somewhat reliable motion detection. My solution was to set the camera up AWAY FROM WINDOWS and set it on IR NIGHT MODE ONLY. I STOPPED motion detection emails. I use PUSH NOTIFICATION ONLY. This setup seems to be working so far.
I recommend these setting to users who are experiencing problems with false motion detection on the 936L. Good luck.

Update:4/6 This solution seems to be working. I am getting TOO MANY PUSH NOTIFICATIONS but I can deal with that. I have re-set the camera to allow one email notification every 2 hours (7200 seconds). This does not overload my email. I am convinced that the false detections occur each time the camera adjusts to ambient light. The camera appears to constantly readjust to even the slightest change in room brightness. I would still not recommend this model.

I found that shadow light movement seems to cause false detections. I too found that having this camera in a room with windows and no actual motion, the ambient day light from sun and general light becoming int the mornings and fading in the evenings causes false detections. I've sent this to D-Link for review. Hoping for something in the future.  ::)

I contacted tech support on this issue yesterday and have an open case in regard to the 936L motion detection problem. I have three of these cameras that are constantly re-focusing and triggering the motion detection. Mine don't have anything to do with clouds or movement of the sun. It is simply a small refocus of the pixels that triggers a motion alert.  I have tried to put them on night vision and while that helped a slight bit, I still get 90% of the false detections that I was getting under the normal day view.

Two of my cameras are located outside and are protected underneath the eve's of the house. So I don't have a situation where it is pointing out a window. The IR night vision won't work anyway if you point it out a window. I also have one in the living room and it has the same pixelating issues that the other cameras have (and it is a room that gets no direct sunlight).

I have a fully functioning DCS-2630 that has zero issues with motion detection and works perfectly. This leads me to believe it is an issue with the 936L as all three of mine have this issue, even when adjusting the sensitivity down below 10% (which then creates a situation where the camera does not detect actual motion of a person when the get near it). I asked to tech support to expedite this and get a firmware update out ASAP.

You mentioned that yours is workable in the short term, but in my opinion putting the camera away from all windows, not aimed outdoors, set to IR mode only, and turning off the email notifications essentially makes it unusable as a practical security measure and requires and immediate firmware fix from D-Link.

I do appreciate all your help FurryNutz, it is very nice of you to try and recreate these issues and help us out. I would have been much more aggressive getting this fixed a month ago when I purchased the cameras, however I had a bigger issue regarding playback that took D-link support a month to figure out. If you have a special character in the password of the camera it would not play back the clips on an iOS phone or tablet.

So I had two major issues with these cameras and have just recently got the 1st one fixed. Need this motion stuff repaired now as well. This can't be isolated to just a few users judging by the same problem with all my cameras. I also took two back to Best Buy when I originally purchased because they had the same issue. So I have five of the 936L's that all do the same thing.

Should D-link solve this problem, the 936L is will be a solid option for an economical security setup in the home.

Thanks for the info.

I understand your frustrations. I'm glad one problem was fixed. Good know about special characters. Seems to be a hang up on these cameras. I don't use special characters however will keep this in mind.

D-Link is aware of the issue at hand. It maybe a refocus issue or possible light movement. From what I can tell with my one camera in a big room with windows and light coming in from the sun and such. Just seems that light or movement of light maybe a factor. Of course if the camera is re-focusing, I would presume this could be the real issue as well.

I've given all my info to D-Link and ref'd all links to this issue here in the forums. They have my returned camera as well so I hope they can reproduce and get this issue fixed. I do like this cameras video. Clarity is stellar.

I hope your cameras will be ok outside under the eves. Eventually they may exhibit problems due to there not weather proof and not supported out side. Humidity and such will have adverse effects on non weather proof cameras.  ::) These are kind of spendy cameras to have out side.  :-\

Users will need to be patient while D-Link reviews this and makes fixes. I hope.  ;)

I just picked this camera up a few weeks ago and do have it pointing out the front window. It picks up many false motions which I can live with. The problem I have is it is not picking up motion of someone walking right in front of the camera. I even have sensitivity set to 60% with no success. It will pick up sometimes but I just had someone walk up and down my path and even stop in front of the camera in broad daylight and it did not detect them. They went back and forth about 4 times with 10 to 15 seconds between each time. Also the full pathway is in view of the camera. No areas are turned off for detection either.

I have my sensitivity set to a minuscule 10%. That has dropped my false detections to just about 10 per day. But I have the same issue you have, it doesn't pick up motion it should catch. It only picks it up if you walk right up to the camera.

Same issues.... waiting for a firmware update. Called tech support and have a case number but they have not called back in over a week.

Thanks for posting. Yes there is a known issue with motion detection. I have passed my test results to D-Link for review and they are aware of the issue in the many threads that users have posted. I hope to see a FW update that corrects this.

Please be patient.

I purchased a new 936L several days ago and it's fairly close in PQ to my 2630Ls.  Comparative screen shots taken.   BUT here's the important part:   There was no motion detection issues until today.  Checked the detection field and it was completely different from yesterday.  That's right... the field changed by itself.   What's even more strange is that the shape, even if relocated, was not congruent to the original.

Have redone the field and kept sensitivity at 50%.   Will give follow-up.

All 936L users:   Please intermittently check the selected field.

What browser are you using to configure the motion detection area?
Recent FW version or shipping?

I presume the camera hasn't moved since you configured the motion detection area?

It was moved, but I recall changing the mask.  Time will tell.  This will be embarrassing if you are correct.

I had mine set up initially as well however moved it and remember looking at the detection area was the same but the video behind the detection area wasn't the same. Keep us posted on what you find out. Can do some tests to see what you find. I can help if needed.

Hi all,

I just want to say that I am also having the same problem. I bought my DCS-936L from Best Buy about ten days ago (mid-April 2017). This seems to set off for no particular reason and doesn't catch the movements that happen right in front of it. This can't even detect a car backing up with reverse lights on!!!! Somehow, this detects minor changes in lighting, thought. This seems like a nice camera and the software to manage it actually quite good, but this inability to detect motion that matters is really embarrassing for the company...

Yeah,
They are so embarrassed that they have not done a thing about it so far.

Hello - I purchased the DCS-936L after having positive experiences with the DCS-930L, and the 936L is constantly giving me false alarms. After working through various settings for hours on end, I have nothing to show for it. I have tried to reset and update the firmware but it still does not work. It seems that the camera is constantly refocusing no matter what mode I put it in. The constant false alarms are going off every minute, but the camera fails to detect people or cars, which is why I purchased it. I walk back and forth in front of it and no notifications are generated. Please advise what I should do and please advise if there will be a firmware update soon.
