Title: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: caspeer on July 12, 2011, 09:48:01 AM
Hello there. I hope I don't mess up with this post but here's my problem.
I bought my d-link 615 a few days ago and managed to connect it to my network and so on but I have a problem when it comes to my download speed. My usual speed is somewhere between 7.5-8 mb/s but when I have the router installed it's limited to 5 mb/s. Do you know why this might be happening?
Ah yes... I forgot to mention, I'm talking about my LAN connection.
Ty and have a nice day :)

What HW version is your router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turn off QoS options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

My router is the one in the link:
http://www.emag.ro/routere_wireless/router-wireless-n-300mbps-d-link-dir-615-cu-4-porturi-10-100-switch--pDIR-615

I looks like it started working after verifying the settings you mentioned but the speed has some weird fluctuations.... One second I have my max speed, the other it goes down to 1-2 kb/s

 DIR-615
Hardware Version: H1
Firmware Version: 8.00

My internet connection is one based on my MAC address. I don't really know what kind it is but what I can say for certain it is that it's not from my telephone. I presume it's cable...

As for the last two questions I don't really know what they mean. Could you please explain? Ty

Was curious if your ISP modem that the router is connected to if it has a built in router as well as the modem part or if it's just a stand alone modem with out any built in router features. If it has a built in router, this can cause connection issues having 2 routers on the same line and network.

What is the brand name and model number of the ISP modem?
You are wired to the router from the PC, not connecting wireless?
Is the Wireless radio on and running? Are you using it?
You can set the WiFi mode from Mixed to Single mode G or Mixed G and N if you have N supporting devices.

I really don't understand what I need to answer for the questions...
Are my motherboard details needed? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2960#ov
It's a GIGABYTE p43-ES3G motherboard

The pc is connected directly from the network slot in my motherboard to the router with the cable I got when I bought the router.

What is the modem brand and model of it that the router is connected too?
There is a another box that the 615 router is connected to that it's connected to your Internet Service provider. THis is the modem. Just curious on the brand name and model number if it.
Your mother board information isn't necessary here.

I don't have any other devices connected to or from my network cable.... It comes from a network switch mounted on a telephone post on my street
Title: Re: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: FurryNutz on July 12, 2011, 11:02:37 AM
Interesting, no modem. I guess thats down the street some where.
Ok, then,

Do you see any speed problems if the router is bypassed and the cable from the telephone post goes directly to your PC?
Title: Re: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: caspeer on July 12, 2011, 11:06:33 AM
Yes I do. That's why I made this topic, because my internet connection is working as it should. The router seems to be the problem...
Title: Re: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: FurryNutz on July 12, 2011, 11:07:36 AM
Yes you do see this problem if the PC is directly connected to the telephone lan cable an the router is not connected?
Title: Re: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: caspeer on July 12, 2011, 11:10:39 AM
So to make myself clear:
When I connect directly thru my network cable, my connection is perfectly normal. It works great.
When I connect via the router, the problems start appearing...
Title: Re: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: FurryNutz on July 12, 2011, 11:16:00 AM
Ok, now I understand.

SO in my first reply to your posting, Have you set up the router with those settings to see if anything has changed?

It's possible to maybe teamviewer in and check the router settings for you.

Is there a more resent FW update for your region?
Title: Re: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: caspeer on July 12, 2011, 11:22:20 AM
I did the setting you made and i got up to my max speed but it still dropped suddenly from time to time. I'm going to reset it, try setting it again and paying attention to what you said. Brb in a few :D

EDIT: Well I'm back... It seems to be working ATM and hopefully it will remain that way.
BTW what does the QoS setting stand for? What does it does. Just out of curiosity.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service)

It helps to ensure that network data is being send and received well for devices and applications set for or it. In most cases, general internet usage for home users does need this option.

For people who game like Xbox or Play station and PC games, it's preferred to set this up.

Unfortunately these routers don't provide any bandwidth management. I would use QoS and set up rules however I think this model router doesn't allow for specific rules to be set up like say a 655 or others. If it had rules for QoS, then you could put who ever is torrenting in the rules along with everyone else then prioritize the torrenter to a level that every still can get internet with out being effected by the torrenter.

What HW version is your 615?

hey. just here to say that the router works wonderful. it's been a few weeks and i haven't had any problems. the signal range is awesome. my concern was that the signal won't pass thru all the wall/rooms of my apartment but it even reaches 4 floors down to a bench where i usually relax. i'm very pleased of the router and how it works. thanks for the help with setting it up  ;D

i have simillar problem. i cant go up to more then 130mbps on 1 computer, on other more then 65mbps, and with 130mbps net is slow too, on cabel all is ok 100mbps real download speed and so on. but wireless just real 67mbps max on 130mbps connection
Network places max speed in 1m range to router on wireless just 2mb/s speed

Using mixed modes will produce lower connection speeds. FYI, you can not attain the same transfer speeds as wired connection due to external interferences, radio signal quality and the nature of the beast that wireless can't go that fast...yet. I usually see about 5-15Mbs between my laptop and a server on the same network.

Always test the speed connections using a wired connections. Wireless can not give the same or reliable readings.

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? 00.00.00.00 dont know mine dns

These should be filled in or you  an fill them in by using the Primary and 2ndary DNS addresses found under Status/Device Info/Wan section on the routers web page.

Hey. I had a friend over the other day and he connected his laptop to my wify network so he could get some stuff. He only had wify b&g and could only get up to 2.5 mb/s. Is that the max speed for g devices?
And after he left my router wouldn't go up to it's max speed. My pc is connected via cable and should have reached ~9mb/s. Did the router do something to limit my speed or could the internet provider's server had done something? It returned to normal after a while but I don't think that's normal...
Ah and another thing. The laptop kept on getting the "!" sign on the wireless icon in the try area. It was connected to the network but not to the internet. Why is that?
Ty for your time in advance  ;D

Title: Re: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: FurryNutz on August 05, 2011, 11:49:44 AM
I don't think this is a problem accept maybe that your PC hw doesn't support any higher connections while using this wireless mode. Attaining higher connection speeds means that your PC hardware must support the modes and frequencies that some routers have. Like to attain 300Mpbs connections on wireless, the router and PC hw must support single mode N, 5Ghz and Security of AES only.

It's possible that your attaining the 130Mbs connection speed based on the PC hw you currently have in which the router and pc are working as designed. When using Mixed mode G and N at 2.4 Ghz, this will be the maximum Speed you'll see.

You must understand that the connection speeds differ from actual file xsfer speeds in which you will not see the same speeds as the wireless signal and technology is effected in many ways that prohibit seeing the same xfer speeds as connections. At most, you should see upwards from 5Mbs-to maybe upwards 15Mbs file xfers depending on where your getting the xfers from, either on the same in house network or externally from a web site. Many factors here. Any other WiFi routers in the near by area? Any cordless house phones?

don't rly know that info since it was on a friends laptop. it was a acer spire laptop with wireless b&g. I can't understand why it would loose the connection to the internet but not to the network. does that usually happen via wireless ?
Title: Re: Problem with my download speed limit
Post by: FurryNutz on August 11, 2011, 07:04:01 AM
If your loosing internet connection and not the internal network means there is a possible problem with the router on the WAN side or up stream from the router to the ISP modem or the ISP modem is losing the connection thus the router is working as designed and just not getting a connection however internal networking is fine.

I recommend setting WiFi to single mode G and test with out any WiFi security for a while and see how it goes. I would also test the Wired connection to see it it exhibits the same connection problems.

I recommend the following:
What HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

I use N standart only

Are you sure your Devices support 5Ghz and connections speeds up to 300? Not all devices support this.

If you are using Single mode N. only other thing you need to make sure is the security mode to set to AES only and Channel width is set for AUTO 20/40.

Read the sticky for information.

what could be the problem so that my router's internet icon is orange instead of yellow/green? that icon was orange until now and the network worked so-so from what you can see from my previous posts :p

It turned to yellow/green by itself yesterday and works wonderful now. Could it be from my internet provider or something?

Since your on Cable, what make and model cable modem do you have?
You might try to see if you can check the ISP cable modem logs or history.
Sometimes you can go to the modem's web page at 192.168.100.1 and see. Not all modems have the same address. If you can find the logs, look for any down time around the time frame that you see the router go down. The reason the router is going down is probably due to the loss of data signal from the ISP modem and not the routers fault.  ::)

The globe should be green I belive all the time unless there is a connection issue. Possible cable between the wall outlet an the modem which I would swap out. I would also call the ISP and ask them if there is any down time on your line and have them verify there connection.

So it would be an outside problem. My plug-in or how it's called. The part that goes into the modem has that little tooth broken and maybe it doesn't stay all that well inside. Could that be the problem?

the clear plastic spring lever? Yes, those are notorious for breaking off. I would get you a new cable that runs from the wall out let or where ever it comes from to the router and see. Cat6 or 5e is preferred.

Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

I turned off QoS

i didnt find DNS Relay under Setup/Networking
i can set up only one dhcp reservation for ip addresses
all the devices are set for obtaining ip adress automatically
there is no tcp and udp option under advanced/firewall.

now i have to test it, and if it works i will let you know
