Struggling speed with 30 down and 5 up
« on: January 31, 2014, 11:33:56 PM »

Hey all,

I recently updated my speed to 30 up and 5 down which is quite nice i may say except my router cant seem to push that unless I do a factory reset and dont do any changes to the settings. Now when I say changes it seems my security seems to bog it.

With a factory reset I can hit my 30 down easily almost hitting 35 down, I have no issues with upstream so no need to talk on that. Its just my downstream. When I am revert to old settings I can barely reach 25 mostly averaging around 20. I am on 2.4ghz multichannel currently on 6 802.11G ONLY. Security settings are WPA Personal, WPA mode WPA2 Only and Cipher type on AES. I have tinkered with the settings and WPA and cipher type on TKIP make it even slower.

Now those are the only settings I adjust after a factory reset. I use old SSID and password and I dont think that is the problem. I am on time warner btw.

After doing a factory reset, do a set up from scratch. Don't reload a saved config.
On Wifi using WPA2 and AES only as AES only has the best performance.

Test your speeds out wired as wireless has many variables that may cause false positives.

How are the wired speeds. Good?

What channel are you using on the 4500?
Any other WiFi neighbors around you?

wired speeds are good. So far what I have noticed is that if I am on G my speeds max out at 20~25 but when I have G and N I hit my wired speeds of 30-35mbs but it fluctuates.

Wireless channel is on 6 and yes 4 other networks visible.

Believe it or not I found out what it was. Since I was on G I would top out at 20-24ish mbs but now that I have G plus on 2.4ghz I hit 30-35mbs, what I should be getting.

G plus is on the router or the wifi on your client? I don't remember seeing G plus on the 4500.

Glad its working better for you now.
