Cant Access Router Interface Behind Switch
« on: April 13, 2014, 05:19:26 PM »

Hi there

In order to add more wired connections to my network I connected a switch to one of the LAN ports of the router.  I am able to get internet to the devices connected to the switch, however for some reason I am unable to access the router browser interface using any the devices connected to the switch.  I am only able to access the router browser interface over wifi or if I make a wired connection directly with the router.  Any ideas on why I can't access the router from behind the switch?

Thanks

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

What Mfr and model is this switch?
What speeds does the switch support? 10, 100 or 1000?

I would presume there is an issue with the switch or possible cabling between switch and PC...

Its not the switch as I swapped it with another switch.

And direct LAN PC connect to same port where switch is connected results in a connection?

I presume it maybe the switch having this green feature maybe.

I use a 24pt switch with mine and i can connect to the routers web page with out issue, however my switch doesn't have any green features...

If it's a true switch, then I'd expect all the devices will have an IP address assigned by the router's DHCP in the subnet range of the router, but that'd be the first thing I'd check.
That is to say, if devices directly connected to the router get IPs in 192.168.1.x, then the devices connected to the switch should also be 192.168.1.x.

What is the make and model of the other switch you tested? Are these managed or un-managed switches?

Mines an unmanaged switch. No green features.

Actually my initial statement is wrong.  I am unable to access the router interface with a direct wired connection to router.  I can only access the router interface via WIFI.

Well that's a strange reversal of the usual problem.

You said this happens with two different switches?

Yeah the other switch I tried is just a old router where I disabled the wireless and DHCP.

Yeah the other switch I tried is just a old router where I disabled the wireless and DHCP.
In that circumstance, did you have the Ethernet cable plugged from LAN port to LAN port?
(Just making sure it wasn't connected from the primary router's LAN port to the WAN port on the "switch".)

Not that it matters, as it seems that the problem is accessing the router's configuration by ANY wired connection, not just through a switch.

Try a different wired PC to the routers LAN ports, if this also fails to get the routers web page, I recommend that you return the unit to place of purchase or phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for an RMA.
