Title: 895L DD-WRT
Post by: Evgenovich on January 18, 2020, 10:34:46 AM
Hello forum!  I've been away for over a year, and I see now that the 895L is discontinued.

I had fun this weekend with it.  I upgraded my data speed from my ISP, Comcast Xfinity, from 150 to 300 mbps.  My Arris modem (controlled by Comcast) handled the upgrade just fine.  I can plug my PC or an Ethernet switch directly into that modem and get 288 mpbs.  But the DLINK 895L router was throttling things back to 147 mpbs (measured wired thru an RJ45 Ethernet Connection).  Took me a  while to figure that much out.  By reloading the FW, v1.21, I was able to get the 895L to pass 288 mpbs.  But-- as soon as I made ANY changes to the 895L's configuration (like turning on the Guest wifi, or toggling uPnP, or even just disconnecting it from the modem then reconnecting it), it reverted back to 147 mpbs.  So after many hours of trying things I decided to take the plunge and load DD-WRT onto it.  Through this blog, I found that uploading DD-WRT for the 895L would only work if I first loaded the OEM v1.13 firmware or earlier. (Thank you Furry.)   So I tried to load V1.13, and then v1.12.  Neither would load.  Next I tried the h/w factory reset pin.

Well....  It ended up reloading v1.21 instead of the original FW version shipped from the factory, and again it errored when I tried to upload v1.12 or v1.13.   So my question is, how to I successfully load an older FW version from v1.21?

Also-- doing the factory reset actually solved my problem.  The 895L now passes 288mpbs regardless of whether or not I make any config changes.  Actually seems pretty solid.  The reset also fixed an issue I've probably had for over a year-- the QoS function didn't work, and the line speed detection feature under the QoS menu also didn't work.  They seem to work just fine now.

So although the problems were solved, I'd still like to go with DD-WRT for a couple reasons:
1.  D-Link isn't going to provide any more firmware upgrades or support.
2.  v1.13 and above reduced the wireless ERP of the modem, per new FCC rules, decreasing my WiFi reliability on the periphery of my property, and decreasing the WiFi speed within my property.  I'd like to crank the RF back up.

So, my question remains, anyone know how to upload older firmware to the 895L?

Follow this for downgrading the DIR router from v1.2x to v1.1x versions before applying DD-WRT:

Looks like a dead link.  Is there a typo?

No, link is working. It's to the WRT FAQ I made up for getting WRT on the DIR-89x series routers. Explains how to downgrade from v1.2x FW to v1.1x. Link is working.
