Title: Optimal settings on DIR868L for PS4
Post by: tjemartin on January 25, 2019, 09:19:14 PM
Hello, pardon my ignorance if this has been brought up before, but I'm at a loss of where to look. Here's my situation. I have a 50Meg down/10Meg up VDSL connection (the fastest connection I can get for DSL and also that I can afford). I live in a basement apartment of a fourplex building, my aunt, along with my cousin and her bf live in the apartment above mine. My cousin's bf has a ps4 that is connected to my 868L (running Firmware Version: 2.05 & Hardware Version: B1) through wifi. He's complained to me that my connection isn't fast enough for his ps4 games (not sure exactly what games he has).

I realize that my set up (also with me having my router in my basement apartment, is not ideal), but given my situation, what are the settings on my 868l that I can check and possibly tweak to get the most wifi speed out of the router. I currently have all settings within the firewall section, unchecked. I heard that enabling upnp can help with gaming, but not sure where to check to see if it's enabled or not.

Any help that anyone can give to this noob is greatly appreciated

Thank you,
Tom M

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

How is the PS4 connected? Wireless or wired? Wired is preferred.
Is other Internet traffic happening while the PS4 is being used?

You can review these to see if this can help:

  • What region are you located?
  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Im in Niagara Falls, ON Canada. I am using a SmartRG 516AC modem (I currently have it set in routed mode, with it's wifi disabled, while the 868L is in DHCP mode). The 516AC also has the latest firmware installed (as per my ISP)

I am using Teksavvy Solutions as my ISP (50mbps down/10mbps up VDSL). All connections (including the ps4) are wireless, the ps4 is located in the apartment above mine. I realize that wired connections are always better, but it's not feasible in my situation.

The only other devices connected to my wifi are my cousin's iPhone X and my laptop (I don't do any gaming with it, just basically email, chatting on Facebook, and maybe the occasional youtube video)

IF you have a built in router with the modem, this can be a cause of problems as well:

Whats the distance between the 868L and the game console? Feet?
