DIR-890L WiFi Main & Guest Dropping

Hello!  I have a DIR-890L router that worked great out of the box from purchase in Aug 2015 until mid-December 2016.  That is when both the primary wifi & guest wifi started cutting out sporadically.  This happened with a Google TV,  iPhones (4, 5S, 6S), & Amazon Fire tablet.  In an attempt to correct the problem I upgraded the firmware from out of the box 1.06 to 1.10 using IE 11, but this did not correct the problem.  I'm a bit scared to try the 1.11 beta, but I did grab the bin file from Dropbox.

Any advice please?   More detail below.  Thank you for the consideration.

What Hardware version is your router? A1
What Firmware version is currently loaded? 1.10
What region are you located? USA - FL
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?  Brighthouse Cable aka Spectrum line into Arris TG862G/TW-0 cable modem.  Cat5 cable (Cat6 ordered after reading some posts on here) @20 feet to DIR-890L.  One desktop connected via Cat5 cable @10 feet to DIR-890L, also suffering sporadic slow connection speeds but I'm more concerned with the wifi.
Has a Factory Reset been performed?  I thought so (paperclipped the button) but all Wifi & QoS settings were retained - is that normal?
Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?  After the 1.10 firmware upgrade failed to resolve the wifi dropping.
What ISP Service do you have?  Brighthouse aka Spectrum Cable Modem
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?  Arris TG862G/TW-0.  I had Spectrum reset the box remotely - did not resolve problem.
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?  Dynamic
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?   The ookla beta site says 27 ms ping, 72.62 mbps download, 6.07 mbps upload on the wired PC.  When the PC is having one of its poor performance spells I've seen this drop down to single digit download & barely detectable upload speeds.
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure.  All connections are secure.  Cat6 cables ordered from Amazon, will be here Monday.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. ping yahoo.com -f -l 1472 returned a reply; 1474 returned a fragmented packet.  I did not find an MTU setting in the mgmt console.
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.  I'm sorry, I'm not sure where to look for this.
If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. The Arris is bridged, which gives the cable people fits.

Is Smart Connect enabled? Could try disabling it and test.
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?

hi Patchycat,

I too was in a doubt of upgrading the firmware 1.11 on my Dlink dir-890l router. I had issues with connections that it will drop off with the 2.4 ghz band or my iPhone devices would get disconnected automatically and takes a while to reconnect. the 2.4ghz/5ghz would not cycle with the smart connect to give me the best connection around my house, so I disabled and it worked for about a month the issue was back. all this issue was on the firmware 1.10. I came here and looked up the issue related to what I had and they said it could of been an interference issue and possibility not the firmware issue. To make this short do what furrynutz says download on your ios/android phone the wifi scanner to analyze wifi signal around to see if your actually over saturated by so many wifi devices broadcasting. anyways for my issue what I did was I checked my surrounding and then downloaded the firmware 1.11 and I decrease the power output on my wifi to medium and have the smart connect enabled. so far I have about 10+ days with no issue on none of my ios devices  have disconnected from my router and smart connect working how it supposed to be. my ios devices are all iPhone 6s plus (have 6 devices) and android devices ( 3 devices) 2 laptop, 1 wireless printer on 2.4ghz that automatically connects fine, and a 4 game consoles hardwired and all this the router works at his peak without no issue wired or wireless.

anyways tried to upgrade the firmware, than lower wifi power output to medium, and enabled the smart connect, also check with the wifi scanner your surrounding to see if your saturated with to much wifi broadcasting around you drowning out your wifi signal

So do you have alot of wifi neighbors near by. I see that you lowered the power out put of the router which is good when in congested wifi areas.

hello furrynutz first time on this forum to actually comment on somebodys topic but lots of helpful tips to go from.
I am located north America (Miami, Florida). also I live in a saturated area of neighbors that use isp provided gateways so that was I think so far my issue of dropped wifi connection on my devices.

Thank you for the feedback and experience. Thats the one thing we've found in congested areas, reducing the power on the routers wifi seems to help.

Glad it worked for you. I'll mention this as well for others regardless of congestion or not.
