Hello, first of all i would like to apologize because of my bad english.

I own a dir 657 that i got mainly for sharing an hdd content over my small home network, in order to play movies on smart tvs and tablets.

Everything seems to be recognized well, as the media server and its content is loaded and seen by my lg smart tv and others various dlna clients (tough the loading time for starting the server with 1 tb external hdd is 10-12 minutes long) This is no big deal is i planned to keep the hdd  on for the most part of the day.

What completely breaks the experience  is the fact that playing a mkv file on the smartv, connected by ethernet cable, causes a sudden crash of the router, a rebooot i think, as no wifi, and no internet even through cable is available until the router boots up again (1 minute ). This happens 5 to 10 seconds after the device has started playing the file. This makes everything completely useless

I tried all the firmware available (1.00, 1.01 and 1.02 beta), as well as disabling qos features and traffing shaping but no success,

Is there anything i can do to solve this deal breaking bug, or should i give up in using this router as a streaming device? Thanks

• What region are you located?
• Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Is the MKV files the only type of file format that exhibits this problem? Can you try some MP4s or maybe raw DVD files or some other format placed on the drive?
Also be aware that 1Tb maybe beyond what this model router can support. You might try the MKV and other file formats on a small size drive and test to see if same thing happens: Router USB HDD Max Size FAQ

- Yes it has, every single time

The problem is present during the reproduction of any video file i've tried (mkv, lo res avi and mp4), and even on a small 8 gb usb key i tried in order to find a workaround.

I've copied router log when the crash occured, maybe it can help

Ok, seems like there maybe an issue on the router.

Can you connect one of the USB drives to a PC and share out the drive and see if the problem continues?
You may need to connect the drive using alternative means. Maybe a USB to LAN converter could help with this. I don't think there is any solution regarding the router and FW. This router is a bit old now and I don't think it's being developed on any more so if we can find an alternative means to gain you stable access to your media sources, then the router should continue to function for all other services...

You may need to phone contact your regional D-link support office and inquire to see if they can do anything else.
