Dir-615 not detected in add hardware
« on: January 05, 2011, 12:49:50 AM »

I am running under windows 7 ultimate

My DIR 615 doesn't show up with a wireless network icon.
When I go to add wireless device its not being detected.

However I can log on and config the router properly and it is working on WAN and Lan.

The wireless config worked and my ssid is showing up on all other computers and they successfully connect to the internet via the DIR615.

When I installed an dlink usb wireless device it was detected and works properly.

For some reason windows 7 is unable to detect the presence of the dir615

The 615 will not show up in Add Hardware.

Does your 7 PC have a wireless adapter installed? What is your 7 installed on? Laptop or desktop?

My Dir 615 is installed on a desktop computer.

There is the 615 router connected to the computers ethernet port and a dsl modem connected to the dir 615.

For some reason I no longer get a wireless network icon or the ability for windows 7 to access any thing related to wireless.

Never the less I can log onto the router and set wlan and wireless. Wlan ppoe contects to the internet and my other computers with wireless cards pickup the ssid and provide internet access.

Is the problem with;
 windows7
dir 615 settings
a hardware problem

How is the 7 PC connected. Wired? Does the 7 PC get an internet connection if wired to the 615?

Thanks for trying to help. Maybe this description will make more sense.

Windows 7 Desktop
Dir615 router via ethernet cable LAN 1 jack  ===> Desktop Windows 7 Computer
Dir615 router via ethernet cable Internet port ===> DSL modem

Acer Laptop
USB Wireless Adapter Dwa-160A2

1) The Dir615 hardwired to the modem and computer gives the desktop working internet (WLAN)
2) The Dir615 is also successfully configured to wirelessly act as a source of wireless internet with a
SSID of piggie showing up on the laptop .

The problem is when trying to add a wireless network on the Windows 7 Desktop no wireless device is being detected.

I am not getting recognitional that a wireless device is connected.

FYI
D-Link DIR-615 User Manual 86
Section 5 - Connecting to a Wireless Network Using Windows® 7
It is recommended to enable wireless security (WPA/WPA2) on your wireless router or access point before configuring your wireless adapter. If you are joining an existing network, you will need to know the security key or passphrase
being used.

1. Click on the wireless icon in your system tray (lower-right
corner).
2. The utility will display any available wireless networks in your
area.

Ok this helps.

We need to know if your Windows 7 desktop has a wireless card adapter installed. If not then you can't connect your desktop via wireless to the WiFi on the router. I presume that your wired connection is preferred for your Desktop?

You can install a PCI wireless card on the desktop, then at that point your desktop will see and can be configured to join the WiFi on the router.

1. Why do you want wireless on your desktop if it's already connected via an ethernet cable to the router?
2. Is there a wireless adapter connected to the desktop, either an USB-based one like the Dwa-160A2 you mentioned, or an internal one?

I think he is wanting to network his wired desktop to his wireless laptop? As for Windows 7 not being able to discovery the DIR-615, I think he means on a network map? First reason that comes to mind if Mac cloning? If the PC is seeing the same mac as it's own from the device it might ignore it on the map. Just a theory.

Thats true to. However if he's on the same work group and has either end shared out with a folder(s) he should be able to map to either one. I have 7 on my DT and my Mac sees the shares just fine. 7 is wired, Mac is wireless. I presume the LT should do the same thing.

Mac as in Mac address, not Mac as in the computer. Usually when you run the CD the router clones the mac address of your computer onto it so to escape ISP charging you more for mult connections. That could have a effect on the map, but I have never tested it.

Yes Harry I know the diff between the mac.  :P

I was just using what I have set up as an example.
Well guess will see what they report back on. Just sounds kinda silly trying to add HW and add a network when the system is connected and can be networked and shared out as they have it set up already..  ::)

FurryNutz, I really appreciate your help and the input of other users on this forum.

I am going to simplify the question

Assume a desktop computer with a dir615 router hardwired to it with an ethernet cable.

In the same room there  is a wireless access point from an other machine with a ssid called xyz using no security what so ever. I am trying to use the feature mentioned in the DIR manual to access this wireless
access point.

Connecting to a wireless network

The manual states;
It is recommended to enable wireless security (WPA/WPA2) on your wireless router or access point before configuring your wireless adapter.

Doesnt the 615router include hardware to act as a wireless adapter or are they refering to an other piece of hardware in addtion to the 615 router .

They are refering to another adapter. The DIR-615, if running stock firmware, can not act as a adapter. The internet connection is coming from the WAN and going to the WLAN and LAN. It cant take a internet connection from the WLAN and bring it to the LAN. Plus you cant have drivers via a ethernet. Well you can, but their your NIC drivers, the drivers that run your Network Interface Card.

My question is why do you need it to do that? Would would you need to connect a wired desktop to something connecting to a wireless access point? Networking? Printer? Game console? The router acts as the hub(general way, not technically) between the PC and the access point, so they are connected that way, so trying go use a wireless adapter on the desktop to connect to the access point is redundant.

Thank you for that answer.

I couldnt get the Dir615 to act as a wireless router because it is not designed to do that.

Reading the manual on setting up the wireless networking  did not make it clear that they were refering to useing the dir615 AND a wireless adapter and not just the DIR615.

Now that I have a properly installed wireless adapter installed along with the DIR615 router on my Desktop computer I can connect to an other WAP (with permission from the owner I pay half the bill)that supplys internet via a cable modem. This 2nd network is set up with Overplay Vpn and allows me access via a US based IP address ( I am located out side the USA) to watch HULU.com)
