Title: DIR 655 Disconnects several times a day
Post by: davidhun on June 17, 2014, 11:50:09 AM
Hi!

I made a new thread after I realised this is the European section of the DIR 655 support group. Sorry.
I would love some help here. I'm having troubles with my router. It's a DIR-655 A4. I feel ashamed but i never updated my firmware on my router till today. I had 1.20EU (2008 version) since i bought it. A few days ago my ping randomly went up to 8000 and i had to unplug the router each time and the problem went away for a bit. I looked up some things on this forum and performed a few tweaks. It seems more stable now but I still have the same problem with high ping. I changed the firmware to 1.37NA (the dlink support page led me to this update) but Im from Europe. Can it cause problems ? If yes can I change the firmware to EU? I didnt preform factory reset after updating the firmware either. Can someone please help me out here ? I'm so desperate. I called my ISP too and they will send some guys to check if there is a problem with splitters, or the modem itself. I would really appreciate some support here. Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english.

edit: I also have these weird numbers on the wireless statistics page:

RX Packets Dropped :7359

FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0) and Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0) and Good Neighbour Policy (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10634.0)

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Hi ! Thank you for the fast reply !

Only wireless connection.
I didnt perform factory reset after the firmware update. Can this be a problem ? Can I preform it now/ It helps ?

The router was working fine. I experienced the first problem a week ago.

I have Cable ISP service.

I have a CBN CV6181E type modem.

Im using g and n wireless mode now, But it was b/g/n i changed it, but the problem still occurs.

I checked nearby routers with inSSIDer. Theres no router using the channel im using (channel 3). It was auto on my setting, now I changed it to channel 3 only. No cordless phons around

The modem is bridged to the router (on the WAN IP adress field there isnt 192.168.2.# number)

Is it a problem that I updated with the 1.37NA firmware instead of EU ?

I only play Dota 2 on my laptop with wireless connection. The ping randomly jumps to 6-7-8000 from 12. When it happens I cant acces to my router through 192.168.1.0

I recommend always doing a factory reset, upload FW, factory reset and set up from scratch. This ensures a good FW update is applied.

I don't recommend using chl 3 as this is a over lapping channel that maybe still used by other neighbors.

How many other neighbors do you have total near you?

Recommended channels are 1, 6, 11 and 13.

Is TS and QoS enabled?

What can I do in this case I forgot to do a factory reset ? I used the 1.37NA firmware even though Im in Europe, is this a problem ? Should I update the firmware to the 1.37EU version ?

I have 5 neighbours. The inSSIDer shows 5 routers in the area. 2 of them using the channel #6, one using channel #11, another one channel #1 and the last one using channel #8.

QoS and TS both enabled.

I have these numbers on wireless statistics page:
 Sent :3017156
TX Packets Dropped :8636
Received :1170767
RX Packets Dropped :7359
Errors :1345

Do they mean anything bad ?

edit: I changed channel to #13

Ah, that could be the problem, You need to use the EU version if your in the EU region...
Download the EU version. I would factory reset the router, attempt to manually load the file using the routers web page. I hope it will take. If it does, factory reset again then setup from scratch.

Use and follow this please:

I downloaded the EU version. I made a factory reset. When i want to upload the new firmware file i get this message:

The uploaded firmware file may not be correct. You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for this device, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.

If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that the device may be too busy to properly receive it right now. In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that you are logged in as a 'user' instead of an 'admin' - only administrators can upload new firmware.

The Gateway will not be reprogrammed.

I downloaded this file from this link: http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router?revision=deu_reva

I cant upgrade it to EU

I was affraid of that, ok, last resort.
Try this using the v1.37EU file, be sure to unpack the .bin file: Emergency Recovery Mode (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=44909.0)

Thanks!

Im sorry but I dont really understand these steps and I dont wanna **** it up so i ask:

Can you explain like I'm 5 these steps:

1.  Plug the Ethernet cable that connects your computer, that was plugged into one of the LAN ports,
2. Setup your PC with static IP - ex: 192.168.0.2 (different from 192.168.0.1)

I have plugged the UTP cable into the LAN 1 port and the other end to my LT.

edit: I scrolled down to the updated post of emrgency recovery. The only step I dont know is how to setup my PC with static ip.

Control Panel
Network and Sharing Center
On left sidebar, click manage adapter settings
Right click wired connection, then click properties.
Open the IPv4 connection.
The top section is the IP address and will be set to Auto Obatain, Select the Manual IP address.
Enter in 192.168.0.49 for the IP address and 255.255.255.0 for Subnet and 192.168.0.1 for Gateway. Save the setting and Ok all the way out from this window.

I did the exact same steps, but I couldnt get the Succes page. After I changed to static ip I opened a Fire Fox browser page, and typed 192.168.0.1 my after I got a message to wait and the router login page loaded.
What did I do wrong ?

When I unplug the router, then press the reset button, keep holding it and then plug it back again... So i hold it but no amber power button blinking. Just the blue power button, but it not blinks.

Do I have to unplug the internet UTP cable when I'm doin the emergency recovery ? Do I have to wait for the amber light even though the on/off flash is blue and not blinking ?

Keep the LAN cable connected between the router and PC.

I think the blinking needs to happen before you can get to the recovery mode...Doing this wont hurt the router. What your trying to do is get the recovery mode to engage on the router, when this happens, you open up the routers web page in the browser and you'll see the recovery mode on the screen as seen on the pic, or should be something similar.

I did the same steps but doesnt seem to working. No amber light blinking.

Do I have to unplug the Ethernet cable that connects to the routers "Internet" (next to the usb) port and the other side to the modem ?

Don't have to but you can try that...
If you can't get in, I'll check with my Rev A at home some and see if I can get in. I know Rev B and C routers do. Not sure about Rev As though.

A little update on the situation:

I played a game with wired connection and everything was good. I had good ping all along, then I played another game with wireless connection and I had the same lags as before. So it seems like that only my wireless is faulty in my router. A bit strange .If I can't fix it I will buy a new one.

One thing I recommend, for gaming? I always game over wired connections. Wired LAN can handle anything. Some wireless connections can be done however in good conditions. At the moment, your condition isn't ideal until we can get correct FW loaded and go from there. I've ask on user who has a Rev A I believe to review this and post here if he knows about the recovery mode. If he doesn't respond I'll still be looking at mine after work.
Title: Re: DIR 655 Disconnects several times a day
Post by: davidhun on June 18, 2014, 12:13:23 PM
The issue seems really strange for me. I had 1.20EU on my router since I bought it, and it worked great. But 2 weeks ago this problem appeared. The ping randomly went up to 8000 and I had to reboot the router every time. I updated it to 1.37NA (instead of EU) and the high ping problem still appears.

So maybe this problem isnt about the firmware ? Maybe buying a new dir 655 is the solution, since Im not really familiar with other products and this 655 worked great for years.

I can only presume that if it had been working up to some point, then stopped, that something in your environment surrounds may have changed. Usually this is the case with WiFi. If it's working stable up to a point then stops, usually has to do with some interferences or a change in the environment.

If we can get the EU version reloaded, then we can correctly troubleshoot the issue.

Ok, I talked the user with a Rev A, seems that there may not be a recovery mode option on Rev A 655's.  :-\ I'll still confirm with my Rev A4 after work.

However he suggested trying the following:
Go back and use the routers web page to upload the one of the files from this location:
ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-655/Firmware/REV_A/ (ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-655/Firmware/REV_A/)

Copy this file to your local PC:
DIR655A4_FW135WWB02.bin
ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-655/Firmware/REV_A/DIR655A4_FW135WWB02.bin (ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-655/Firmware/REV_A/DIR655A4_FW135WWB02.bin)

Try this in IE first, then try with FF if IE fails. Be sure to disable browser add-ons and PC security and hard wired to the router with PC. Use the normal method to navigate to the file in the routers web page and select this file to update.

Let us know if you get this loaded with out any errors.

Should this version load with out errors, go back in and load the v1.37EU version back on top of it from the UK web site, then if that goes, do a factory reset and set up from scratch.

If you can't get the v1.35WW loaded, Try one of the v1.21WW versions listed in the OLD folder and see if one of those will load using the routers web page. If all this fails, stop there.

Ok, going to have one user come take a look at this and see if he can offer up some help. You might want to start looking for another DIR series router.  ::)

I can confirm that I could not gain any recovery mode on my Rev A4 yesterday so all Rev As don't have this feature unfortunately.  All Rev B and Cs do and all newer generation Rev A routers do.

sorry, busy busy!

Okay... so if i'm following correctly, we have a DIR-655 A4 EU model running NA firmware and we want to get it back to the EU firmware. i flashed my router to the EU firmware tonight, so i'm pretty sure this will work. basicly, D-Link started region locking the firmware at v1.35 and above because of all the monkeying around we did with the Russian firmware at 1.34. they also locked the firmware so that you can't downgrade to any firmware lower thanv 1.35. here's what you do

1. download all the files you need from the link below and off the D-Link website. just change your region in the top right corner to get the files you need
2. connect to your router using wired connection, and reset using the interface.
3. downgrade your router to v1.35NA (when i did this, i downgraded my version one at a time. ie, v1.37NA to v1.36NA, then V1.36NA to V1.35NA. you may be able to downgrade directly and there's no harm in trying).
4. Upgrade to this special modified version of 1.34WW
     ----https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=81FD429371E369B8!11748&authkey=!AJ8bfZgfbFl1cq4&ithint=file%2c.bin---
5. Upgrade to 1.37EU
6. Reset again

i hope that helps. if i'm honest, it seems the problem shouldn't been in the region your firmware is in. the only difference should be the wireless channel's you can use due to local law. however, by changing back you might fix the problem by removing a variable or fixing a bad flash.

anyways, i'm off to try and figure how to flash a DIR-655 from EU back to NA...

Hey there again ! I'm really sorry i didnt updated my situation. So heres the thing.
My father bought a brand new router cuz he got angry and thought it will be the right choice. Despite I told him to buy another D-link product he f**ked up and managed to buy a Ds-link one. When I got home (i had to leave house for about 3 weeks for work) I wasnt really happy, but he insisted installing the new one.
So the new one was fine for about a month. Yesterday all of the pc's WLAN connection slowed down drastically. So i decided to try the D-link one. I followed every single step, but I couldnt downgrade the 1.37NA to 1.36NA. Then when I tried the 1.34WW one it finally worked. I was so happy. I managed to upgrade it after to 1.37EU. The router is working perfect now.

I wanna thank everyone in this thread who helped me, especially FurryNutz. Thats what I call proper product support. I will happily recommend this brand to anyone in the future. Thank you very much for the help !

AWESOME!!! ;D  Glad you got it back to what should be loaded and it's working well for you.

Do a router configuration back up to file so you have it if you need to later on. Keep it safe.

Enjoy now.  :)

ILooks like I made the same mistake, I accidentally flashed my A3 with an NA firmware instead of EU. I managed to follow shawn46's instructions and downgraded from 1.37NA to 1.35NA. However, the modified 1.34 firmware he posted is no longer available and I can't upgrade to 1.37EU. I'd be very happy if someone could reupload the modified firmware and help me make my router EU again.

Edit: I'd also like to know what the differences are between EU and NA firmware versions.

Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48135.0)

You might send a PM to both of these users and see if they have this file.

Keep us posted.

Some features differ between NA and EU regions. Specially in WiFi.

Yay, my router now has the 1.37EU installed!  ;D

I managed to find a 1.34WW recovery firmware from a German D-Link ftp server ftp://ftp.dlink.de/dir/dir-655/driver_software/ . In the index info file  DIR-655_fw_reva_134ww_RecoveryFromNA-Firmware.zip is described as "Firmware to reinstall a EU-Firmware when a NA-Firmware is installed for Rev.A"

Direct link: ftp://ftp.dlink.de/dir/dir-655/driver_software/DIR-655_fw_reva_134ww_RecoveryFromNA-Firmware.zip

This firmware allowed me to overwrite the NA firmware and all I needed to do was to drop in this firmware and then upgrade to the latest 1.37EU. No hassle at all.

So, my problem is solved now. :)
