This is what I've been running and so far it's fixed the problems I was having with the router:

Setup -> Internet -> Manual Internet Connection Setup
Primary/Secondary DNS Server:  Manually enter your DNS settings (this is optional but I manually change my DNS server because I like to use OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/

Setup -> Wireless Settings
Security Mode: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: WPA2 Only
Cipher Type: AES
802.11 Mode:  Use only the modes that are needed for your devices.  For example, I only have G and N devices on the 2.4Ghz, N and AC devices on the 5Ghz.  So my settings are Mixed N + G for 2.4Ghz and Mixed N + AC for 5Ghz.
Wi-Fi Protected Setup: Disabled.  Sometimes the router would fail to reboot and I was forced to power cycle.  Disabling this seemed to have fixed it.

Setup -> Network Settings
Local Domain Name: dgl5500.local (you can enter anything - I use Avengers.local).  DNS lookups weren't functioning as expected on a Windows PC until I set this settings.
Enable DNS Relay: Disabled.  Disabling the DNS relay made a huge difference for me and fixed various devices from suddenly not being able to access the internet.

Setup -> Streamboost
Enable StreamBoost Bandwidth Control: Enabled
Enable Auto Bandwidth Estimation: Enabled - StreamBoost accurately estimates bandwidth in all my test with a Cable modem.  If it's incorrect then disable ABE and enter high numbers like 100/50, test your speeds at http://www.speedtest.net/, then manually enter the speedtest numbers.  DO NOT LEAVE IT AT 100/50.
Automatically update StreamBoost: ***Update*** Try leaving SB Updates enabled first and disable only if the my network/statstics pages stop working for you.

All other settings are default I believe.  I have some DHCP reservations but that's about it.

Have you left the Auto Update SB enabled and rebooted the router when you've noticed that the router has become unstable? Is the router stable after the reboot?

I presume we need to test this out and let D-Link now about this if this is an issue.

Previously with StreamBoost Updates enable and DNS Relay Enabled, when I ran into problems with Skype and the Active Devices/Statistics stopped functioning I would reboot the router from within the router page.  Yes after rebooting it was good again from anywhere between 1-4 days and then I'd see problems.

What I have not tried is leaving DNS Relay disabled and re-enable the StreamBoost Updates.  Those are the two most recent changed before I stopped needing to reboot every few days.

Would you turn Autoupdate back on for SB and see what happens over the next couple of days. Then if you notice that the router is not working well, reboot it and then check again? Post your findings...

Also is HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled on the 2.4Ghz radio?

HT20/40 Coexistence is enabled.  As far as wireless connectivity goes, it's been solid.  My devices don't disconnect at all.  Although I only have a few phones connected to the 2.4Ghz.  1 Android (Nexus 5) and an iPhone 5.  There's also a Wii U and an Xbox 360 but those don't get used much.  5Ghz I'm connected through my PC with an Asus PCE-AC68 PCI-Express Card (866.5Mbps very solid connection).  Xbox Ones are solid on the 5ghz too.  There's only 1 other 2.4Ghz router from a house nearby and no other 5ghz networks.

D-Link would like to know what you mean by the router being "unstable"? Can you give some details on what you and the router are experiencing when this happens?

When I say unstable I mean that the way the router functions at day 1 is not consistent.  For example, day 1 fresh boot the active devices pages work, properties, and statistics all function (with the exception of the statistics drop down menus those have never functioned in this build).  Skype calls work as expected, streams are good on video apps, etc.  After a few days people can't hear me on skype randomly and I have to end and restart the call every few minutes, the above mentioned router pages stop working, and streams buffer a lot or error out.

After disabling DNS relay and turning off streamboost updates the router works great whether its day 1 or 8 days later with no reboot.

So I guess when I say unstable its more about streamboost and various router pages.  The wired connection, wireless, and wan are all good.

IMO there is some sort of problem that happens when streamboost tries to run its upload/update/restart process.  I enabled SB Updates again I'll keep you posted.

I have been experiencing the same issue as B.Banner I will try the fixes mentioned above and see if this fixes the issue. I seem to still experience wifi drop outs where I get 50% packet loss or higher if I try to ping the router. I also will start experiencing slow web page performance unable to see my devices bandwidth usage random page timeouts even when trying to login to the router etc. My router has also bombed every time I try a firmware upgrade and I have to recover it back. I am not sure if anyone else has experienced this or not. Typically none of these issues exist (except for the firmware upgrade) until it has been up for a day or two. Eventually it is unusable and needs to be rebooted to obtain access.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.

• Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
• Turn OFF DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

 
Wireless Configurations

• Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
• What wireless modes are you using?
• 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
• Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
• Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
• What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
• What wireless devices do you have connected?
• Any cordless house phones?
• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
• If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
• Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
• Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement

Odd.  Try my settings and go through furrys post.  Packet loss shouldn't be happening I get no packet loss unless I take my phone far away into the 80db range.  I'm curious if this is on 2.4/5ghz/ both? And what device are u getting packet loss from? 

You say u have not been able to update the firmware?  Make sure u update from a wired device using Firefox and restore factory defaults both before and after the firmware upgrade.

Yes   I am just waiting to finish testing my current router settings with DNS Relay off and SB Updates re-enabled before moving on.

I will also confirm following banners suggestions have also helped me.  Streaming video no longer suffers issues and the router is better with "crapping out". 

So basically, it seems more stable over time.  I normally have to reboot once a week, otherwise video and network quality suffer as the router gets laggy itself.
