Title: Error: Failed to map drive

Hi Everyone,

I've been at this for hours and have gotten no where.  I can't map the drive.  When I try I get the "failed to map drive" error.  I have tried to map the drive through Vista by typing \\192.168.xxx.xxx.  I get a message saying Network Error Windows cannot \\192.168.xxx.xxx.  If I open up Network I do not see the drive there.

If I go into Norton Internet Security and select "View Home Network" I can see that the drive is online and and I can see the IP address.  I can access the drive through the GUI if I type the IP address into the brower.  I can update the firmware and format the drive from there.  So it looks like the drive is on the network.  But it won't map.

I have tried every solution I could find on google.  I have stopped Norton and even uninstalled it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Try this...

To map the drive in Windows:
 
- Go to the Start menu, and select Run
- Type '\\ip_address of DNS' and press Enter (ex. \\192.168.0.10)
- You will log into the drive at this point
- Right click the desired folder to map to your system, and select 'Map Network Drive'
- In the wizard, select the desired drive letter and click on 'Connect using different username'
- Enter the username and password setup on the DNS-323 and click Ok
- Click Ok at the bottom of the page and the drive should be fully mapped

As impossibility of drive mapping in Windows is also present when no external drive is connected the problem is probably the Windows itself. When it happens to me I put the IP address on my PC network card from static to auto, make repair (renew IP address). After doing this I can se all my drives in network. So now I map the drive(s) and after mapping I put static IP on PC card back.

Create a batch job with the contents.

net use \\DNS-323 password /user:user_name

where:

DNS-323 - Network name of the DNS-323, or you can use the IP address of your NAS.
password - Password of the share you wish to access.
user_name - User name of the share you wish to access.

Run this at startup and you'll have access to the shares using XP-Home, and I presume the Vista Home versions as well.



Now drive mapping should work as you expect.

Thank you. Although it was likely you were suggestion a solution for XP users, this solutions also worked for me using Windows 7, although I did not have to connect using different credentials. You can see what I went through to solve this issue here:
