Title: DIR 826L drops WiFI
Post by: frustratedpaul on December 28, 2012, 11:36:24 AM
I have a Dir 826L.  Hardware vers a.  firmware 1.02.  It is connected to TimeWarner box from which we get their services (the DLink is doing the routing).  We have two networks, and two guest networks, and almost all the time we are all on 2.4 network.  We have potential to have 9 devices using networks.

I use a Toshiba, with win 7 home, use Firefox, and experience no problems.

Some of us use Android phones, and notice no issues.  Some of us use Apple phones, and notice no issues.

My family uses Apple computers, Mountain Lion, and Chrome, and they experience the following problems:  start computer, they may get on line or they may not and have to search to the network (which is discoverable), select our network, give password, and sign in.  After 10 to 60 minutes, they will be disconnected from internet.  Then, they will search for signal, usually find the signal and select it, sometimes with success, most of the time getting the password prompt again, which sometimes works and sometimes does not.  Occasionally they will be told there is no signal, search again and again, find signals, find our network, and repeat above.  All computers have been instructed to remember the networks, and they seem to.  At any point when things do not work, unhappiness is expressed toward the one person who has a signal.

I've rebooted router, checked cords, etc.  I even tried reserving their IP address on DHCP reservation list.  I've followed the usual advice offered on this forum -- Qos, port, advanced stuff settings left alone.
These measures do not help.

What does not happen:  router is not hot, router has not rebooted, router seems to be working normally (for me), the wind is not blowing, etc.  We notice no signal strength variance.  Our apple users do not experience this problem at other locations, just at home.  No issue on LAN, but we don't use it much.

Router logs show their device joined, and then they leave.  We also just started getting this message on lof:  user.warn: syslog: Warn: select() failure; Errno(4): Interrupted system call

I surely appreciate your kind assistance.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)

What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed and then set up from scratch again?
When the connection goes down on WiFi, does the wired LAN connections still work to the router and internet?

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0)
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50738.0) Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6)

Wow, thanks for fast reply.
I live in North Carolina.  TimeWarner modem is Arris, TM402P/110.

Don't know if wired works when wireless is down.  But, wireless is down only for the majority,  and not for me on Win 7.

Tried adjusting 2.4 network to mixed g and n, and my wireless disappeared and could not connect.  Got on LAN, and adjusted back so at least wireless is back.
Have not tried a factory reset.
QOS is off, traffic shaping is not engaged. DNS relay is on.
DCHP is on for all devices.  UPnP on, multicast streaming enabled.
WAN port speed is auto.
I do not see endpoint Independent for tcp and udp in firewall settings.
My connecting cable is not marked, but has factory ends.  Will try a different cable.
Security settings are what you suggest.

Another oddity, when  I loook at my network  on computer, the DIR 826L appears, then disappears.  Wireless signal stays, just the image on the screen blinks.

Many thanks

What wireless mode does your computer support. I'm wondering why when switching to Mixed G and N mode, why your PC would not reconnect. It should easily reconnect if your PC supports G or N modes.

Does the WiFi disconnect if you turn off ALL wifi devices as a test, then use one device, test and then graduate turning on other devices?

Be advised that I think this model Modem has a built in router possibly.
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm)
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Keep us posted.

Hi FurryNutz,

Thanks for the welcome.   :)  The router's hardware version is A1, and it's Firmware version is 1.04.  I'm in Ontario, Canada.

I've done a couple of the things you said to try in the original post:

- I've set the wireless to mixed G and N, turned off 5 GHz completely (we don't use it)
- Reserved the IP addresses of most of the devices on the network.
- Turned off Advanced DNS service
- Set the wireless channel to 11
- Channel width is 20/40 MHz
- DNS Relay is on

However, a couple of the options you mentioned weren't available in the menu.  I think it may be because I'm running Firmware version 1.04.

As of a few minutes ago, we were still experiencing some signal droppage.

Any suggestions?   :-\

Thanks,
MDKG

FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.

Hi FurryNutz,

Yes, a factory rest was performed before the firmware update.  We had experienced some problems a while ago, and I had called in to D-Link Technical Support.  He told me to do the Factory Reset and upgrade the firmware, so I did.

As for wireless devices, we have:
- 1 Desktop computer
- 4 laptops (2 Macbooks, 2 PCs)
- 4 Smartphones
- 2 Game Consoles

There are about 20 wireless routers in the area, including ours.

There are some cordless phones in the same room as the router.  I'm not sure what band they operate on though.

Thanks,
MDKG

Having that many neighbors could be contributing to your Wifi drops along with these cordless phones if they are operating on or near 2.4Ghz.
Links> Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0) and Good Neighbour Policy (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10634.0)

You need to find a open and clear channel to use if possible on 2.4Ghz. 1 6 or 11 is preferred...depending on what your nieghbors are using.

One thing to try:

Do you have any devices that support 5Ghz?

Hi FurryNutz,

I checked the inSSIDer program.  Most of my neighbours were on channels 1, 4-8, 6, 9 and 11.  So I put the router on channel 10 and I'll try it out.  I also changed by 2.4 GHz transmit power to Medium.

Thanks,
MDKG

Keep us posted. You have a crowded area. It would be good if you can upgrade or use 5Ghz.

Hi everyone,

So after changing to the router to Channel 10, and adjusted all the other settings that have been mentioned, I was still experiencing a lot of droppage, sometimes even worse than before.  I switched the router back to Channel 11, and now it's working decently, but we're still looking for solutions.  I can't switch everyone over to the 5GHz network, because not all of the devices here have the capability to utilize it.

My next step is to look for an alternate location for the router and see if that helps.

Can you detail us which devices that have LAN and USB ports available? If any of these devices have these connection ports, you could upgrade theses to 5Ghz. You need to migrate as many devices away from 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz as possible as it seems that your area has many other neighboring WiFi routers near by and are probably the main cause of this router dropping WiFi on this radio. I bet that 5Ghz will work way better.

I have this same router and it works great for me however I only have hand full of neighbors near by so channels are not congested.
