Title: Replacing fan on DNS-320L
Post by: rlcabral on March 14, 2013, 07:46:08 AM
Hi,

I've bought a new fan (NB-BlackSilentFan XM-1 (http://www.blacknoise.com/en/products/it/12/Noiseblocker-NB_BlackSilentFan_40mm)) and after installing it, the system can't start the fan. The log says: Fan Is Unable To Spin Or Fan Doesn't Exist

Here are the specs of the new fan:
Code: [Select]
Size: 40x40x10 mm
Rated voltage: 12v
Voltage range: 8,5v-13,8v
Input power: 0,36W

Considering the specs of the original fan (AVC DS04010B12U):
Code: [Select]
Size: 40x40x10 mm
Rated voltage: 12v
Voltage range: ???
Input power: ???

I think the new fan should work. I already tested the fan on a computer and it worked normally, so the fan is not defective.

Does anyone know if this fan, or a fan with these specs, works on DNS-320L?

I had the same problem when i changed my fan to a Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX. The problem turned out to be that the polarity is switched on the connector used for the fan. The solution was to cut the plug of the new fan and switch the negative and positive wires around.

I hope that helps.

I wonder who had the idea to made the system with polarity inverted. AVC who made the fan or D-Link who built the board. AFAIK, all the fans in the market are exactly the opposite. Well, at least they are not using 5v fans anymore. It would be a nightmare to find a fan for replacement.

After replacing my fan, i have System Temperature 116°F/47°C and Disk Temperature 120°F/49°C. Is that ok or it is to high? I have set the fan control to Auto (Low/High).

By chance, I also bought the NB-BlackSilentFan XM-2 from Amazon. Of course, ended up paying twice the price as it had to be shipped to Singapore. Also, not sure the differences between the XM-2 vs XM-1. Anyway, here's what I did. The plastic connector block has 3 small holes on side. Gently tug the wires, then with a sharp tool (paper clip or toothpick), press one by one, the 3 metal connectors thru these holes. It should allow you to pull loose the three wires, white, red, and black.

Now you can match the three wires order with the original fan, which is white, black, red, then insert the metal connectors back into the plastic block. Remove the original fan, replace it with the XM-2 fan, connect, and you should now have a very silent NAS box. It really is quite impressive the change in noise level.

How are people finding the new fan, still generally happy?

I've had enough with the standard one as the noise levels are unacceptable being just as bad as my old DNS-320.

Defiantly! I sleep in the room where my NAS is placed, so the noise level were simply unacceptable. The replacement fan is great. I barely hear it, unless it is on high, but even then it's still very acceptable.

Good to hear :)

Is this the right one to order - http://www.amazon.co.uk/NoiseBlocker-Case-Fan-NB-BlackSilentFan-Version/dp/B002DG1QUM ?

If it helps, my model is the NB-BlackSilentFan XM-2 40x40x10
The specs differs slightly, it's 14 dBA, 4 CFM, it spins faster, 3,800 rpm vs XM-1's 2,800 rpm, it will fit on the box with no problem whatsoever. Well, just that you need to switch the wires to make it work.
Other than that, it's a real charm in eliminating the stock box noise.

Hi...

the fan is annoying me very much too... so does chaging the fan is really effective ?
And is the box still cooled down enough ?

Hi, I've recently discovered that the fan control stops working after some time, so it stays always on.
If you restart the fan_control, it detects correctly fan and temperature, and stops it, so I've added a cron job to restart it every 10min, and the fan turns on rarely since then.
You can check if this is the case if you see "Fan not detected.."in the error log.

Hi,

so i've replaced the FAN. About the noise it is awesome... but i'm not sure the auto mode is working properly...
If i put low/high, the fan is spinning... if i set auto mode, i see it always off... despite the t° is going up (i'm with 48-50°C on the system temp and around 45-50° on the hard drives)...

What are your t° ?

Ok... I see. But if the fan has to spin even when the NAS is idle, that's nonsense... i'd prefer to turn back to the old fan ... At least it was not spinning when in idle mode.
Are you sure ?

Same here after replacing it, I set it at Low/High, and you're right, it continues to spin even when the HDD is idle. But then again, with barely no noise, and it should help to keep the circuits temperature in check, why worry? I mean, I would thought the fan is to keep the environment inside the box, cool, right?

BTW I've also seen in the log: "Fan not detected..." message. I believe it's also mentioned in the Firmware Upgrade discussion about it being a bug. In my case, I don't keep the box on 24 x 7, so I'll ignore this symptom for the time being.  :D

Just finished fitting an XM1 but can't seem to get it to spin up, set the fan control to Manual/ Always High and nothing seems to be happening. Have swapped over the wires as per the earlier posts. Any suggestions?

Update, it seems to work if you manually spin the blades then it starts up. Maybe an issue with the DNS not giving it a high enough start up voltage?

Hi,
I think the problem is indeed the lack of "juice"...
In auto mode my 320L will not start the XM-2 replacement fan, even if the box is @ 50C.
If I switch to manual (always high) it will start.
If I go back to Automatic (Low/High) it will slow down after some time, so the speed control does work.
If I go back to full Auto mode, it will stop once the box is @37C but it will never start again.
I've noticed that there is a small movement when I switch back to Auto (Low/High) but it will not start to spin unless you help to get the first spin... This proves that the power is not enough for it.
According to the XM-2's spec http://www.blacknoise.com/de/products/it/12/Noiseblocker-NB_BlackSilentFan_40mm (http://www.blacknoise.com/de/products/it/12/Noiseblocker-NB_BlackSilentFan_40mm) it needs 8V to start...
It would be nice to know how much the original fan needs... and the best would be to modify this thru fun_plug ;)

The starting voltage of the XM-2 is 8 V, so it won't start in low mode. Starting voltage of the original AVC fan ist 5 V. I installed a XM-1, whose starting voltage is 9 V and set the control to manual so it would run all the time. But even then cooling power was not enough so the system shut down on hot days.  It shovels only 0.08 m³ (the XM-2 0.11) while the original AVC 4010_12U does 0.238. Eventually I switched back to the AVC , therefore.

I've got exactly the same problem: since i've bought and install a XM-2, even always running, the temperature of my NAS increases and after a while, it shuts off. I'm going to switch back to the old AVC fan, even with the noise :(

I have installed now a Noctua NF A4x10 distributed by Amazon. It is a litte bit noisier than the Blacksilent fan but much more quiet than the original AVC  :). Though the cooling power does not quite reach that of the AVC it seems to be plenty enough. The fan starts and  rotates in low mode - never went up to high mode yet. Also I went back to FW 1.01 where the fan switches off when the disks are not in use, which  was not the case with 1.02 or 1.03  :(. The latter ones show temperature in the configuration menu, 1.01 does not  ???. Temperature is ok, however, as one can check with disk temperature in the menu.

I have to add that tempereture is shown when I use firefox instead of Chrome ;D

Have fun

Okay, thanks for news. But, it delivers only 0.137 m3/s so it's very lower than the AVC. Is this flow enough ?

I would also like to add that the board provides only 5V to the fan, which is not enough for it to run normally (otherwise it won't start).
You need 12V for the fan. Luckily, the board has such an option. You need to resolder the inductor from position L1 to L2 and voila - fan gets 12V instead of 5V (see image). I took my board to a repair shop and they did this for me for $5.

Has someone figure out how to add a second fan? Maybe as an intake?
And could you add the second fan to the same connector of the original one by splicing into the cables so it gets the power from there (12v right?) and maybe control it also?

After 2 years or so, my XM-2 fan bearings gave in. Still worked but the noise was unbearable. Ordered the Noctua NF-A4x10, but replacing was a bit of a challenge. It's slightly thicker, the mounting screws just barely made contact with the frame. Have to "stretch" the case a bit get fit back the metal frame with the new fan, and most important, the wires, the black and red wire, need to be switched (just like with the XM-2).

Unlike the XM-2, the Noctua NF-A4x10 works in the auto setting. When the DNS-320L boots up, the fan spins momentarily at the the start up sequence testing the fan setting, i.e., Set Fan-Control Mode to Auto ("Off/Low/High").

It's a very quiet fan for sure.

Hi there all. A bit radical I know, but I just removed the old fan completely, and fitted a Gelid Silent 8 (80x80mm) fan to the top of the NAS. The reason I did this, was temperature related rather than noise. I just thought that the NAS running at over 49c and both drives constantly over 45c was too much. After the mod the system temp never goes above 36c, and the drives (which are in continuous use) run at 35-36c. I had to reverse the polarity of the fan plug wires in order for the fan to work, and I run the fan at maximum - which is still much quieter than the original. Noise in general is not an issue for me as the NAS is in a temperature contolled cabinet (which sits at 25c) so I don't hear it at all.
Obviously, the NAS will not win any beauty contests, but I am convinced that I have added some longevity to both the unit itself and the hard drives.

I'm considering doing this myself.
Did you place the fan blowing air in or out?
Thanks.

Hi. Sure, I'll try and post some pics over the weekend. I mounted the fan on top of the unit, sucking air out. I removed the old fan and I placed some black duct tape over its inlet holes. I also used some black silicon to block the vent holes in the top cover; my intention being for the new fan to draw air from the bottom air holes all the way through past the disks and out through the top. It works great!

Ok. Here's some pics as promised. Like I mentioned previously, it's not going to win any beauty contests, but it does work really well in terms of cooling.

Yes, I'm running it at max speed, but it is much quieter than the original. The auto function didn't work when I tried it, but I didn't troubleshoot it as having the fan permanently on wasn't an issue for me, and I didn't want any more downtime.

Stock fan (http://m.dhgate.com/product/avc-ds04010b12u-4010-dual-ball-bearing-12v/257266869.html#Viewsdr) - 28 - 36 CFM
Noctua A4x10 (http://noctua.at/en/nf-a4x10-flx/specification) - 8.2 m3/h

According to online converters (http://www.convertunits.com/from/cubic+m/hr/to/cfm) 28 CFM is 47.5 m3/h !!!

I also decided to replace the noisy fan yesterday. This is what I did:
The new fan has ultra low noise. Auto fan control works too. However, I set it to run "High" constantly. The new fan sucks air out of the chassis, so cold air flows in at the bottom/back (where the original fan was). When it is in idle, it is aorund 33/34 C degrees.

Hi I've replaced the old fan with the noctua and it is great.
however :
- the fan speed is not correct on the web interface.
- it has not resolved my problem with the temperature sensor even if the temperature is not > to 39°C (if i'm rebooting the nas cannot start and has a blue led blinking... I had to put it in the fridge to be able to get it work again)

any idea?

Possible that you might need a bigger fan. If the replaced fan isn't working well or right, there maybe possible irreparable damage as well. Might try mounting a large fan under the DNS. Something like a laptop cooler could work well.

On the hairy edge of still be hot. 102F. Over time there will be some HW degradation due to the heat. If there has been interruptions in FAN and air flow and the unit has not operated correctly, other damage could also be a factor.

Does the DNS have ventilation slats on the bottom of the case?
