Post by: D-Link Multimedia on May 21, 2009, 02:16:37 PM
Subject says it all, will use this thread for compiling a list of current bugs. Note that not all of these have been fully verified but it is just easier to keep track of it for implementing fixes.

Uhm, probably a million people ask this, but I thought I'd try... is there a rough scheduled release date for this new firmware?

1. The Power LED CONTROL does not work.  Will dim the lights but not turn off.

2. The FTP SSL/TSL option is backwards.  EX. Clicking the checkbox disables SSL/TSL and unchecking it enables it.

3 The Firefly ITunes server asks for a user name and password that is unknown.

The 1.08 does not improve browsing in the xbox 360. 90% of my folders and files I still cannot see. My xbox 360 sees the dns-323 but forget about seeing files it stores. Hopefully the real release fixes this issue.

Scan your files for any special character, such as @ # % ^ &  and remove them
try to stick to dashes - underscores_ and spaces

I believe the problem is the 360 in this case... it has issues with special characters.

That's not the problem. All my files are 1 word names (no special characters, spaces...etc.) and it still is the same. Besides I had twonky running (twonky running off the NAS and not computer)  and all was read by the xbox360 (without the need of a computer, regardless of name length...etc or how deep folder trees were). I've taken twonky off since the 1.06 came out hoping I wouldn't need a 3rd party application so the xbox360 could see the files, but sure enough 90% of the files could not be seen. I have another dns-323 that never had twonky and still the same issue. If twonky could do it, I'm sure someone at D-link could come up with firmware to remedy this.

Sry to ear that marsandme,

I can says that since I upgraded to v1.06 I had no issues sharing my files to the 360.
I need to mention that I'm only sharing Video file... no MP3 or pictures
Got over 200 folders on the 1st folder level, and maximun only 3 level deep
and each folder level can contain from 1 to 26 individual files.

got over 2500 files shared in this fashion....

And I can't say that the xbox 360 does see all of them... because I did not verify all of them 1 by 1
But I can says that everything seams to be there.. I did some spot check on my TV series.... and
they do appear to be all there.

I wish mine was working as yours is...unfortunately its not. Perhaps different versions of xbox 360's react differently. My 360 was one of the first to come out.

After installing an upgrade from 1.06 to 1.08, the shares that I have defined do not appear any more on the "Network Access" page. The page reports 14 "records," (which is how many shares I had) on two pages. I can click the orange arrows to change between pages, but both pages are blank.

I'll attach a screen shot which shows the page.

[I attempted to attach a screen shot, but when I tried to post the message, I got an error that "the attachments directory is not writable." (And the message itself became un-editable - I had to copy the whole thing and start a new reply.)]

The directories are still shared on the LAN. I can browse them from my computer using File Explorer. They just don't show up in the DNS-323 UI any more.

Also, my impression is that 1.08 is rather slow compared with 1.06. Login takes a long time and the various pages seem to take a long time to display.

For now I'm going back to 1.06.

Xbox 360 shows shared MP3 Albums in alphabetical order by track title, not by track number...

I could've sworn this wasn't a problem with 1.07, though I could be crazy...  I only ran 1.07 for a few days.

Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.08b5

Harddrive 1: Samsung HD154UI 1.5 TB
Harddrive 2: Samsung HD154UI 1.5 TB

Problem 1:
I cannot get RAID 1 enabled.  After each format, I still end up with two separate volumes.  I have not tried reverting back to an earlier firmware to test.

Problem 2:
Since I couldn't get RAID 1 to work, I decided to do nightly FTP copies.  Most of the time I would only get the top-level directories to copy over (and only on the first run - any additional runs would miss any new directories in the source folder).  Plus, sometimes the only thing that would copy over is the first letter of each directory.  Very odd problem.  Again, no files.  I tried doing incremental and not, same results.

Problem 3:
This is actually a continuation of problem #2 above...  I have several videos ripped directly from my Canon HV20 video camera, each about 10-11 GB.  FTP wants absolutely nothing to do with these.  Is there a size limit?

Problem 4:
I have renamed my NAS from the default DNS-<MACADDRESS> to DNS-323 at least 3 times.  However, whenever I hard restart the device it goes back to the default.  This also happened when upgrading to 1.08b from 1.07.

Any chance of restoring the functionality where you can have anonymous shares and passworded shares on the same unit?  That used to work, but now it no longer works, all have to be passworded if any are.  I saw a comment about the DNS-321 that they planned on fixing that in a future beta, how about for the DNS-323?

Please, please allow me to play my songs on my .ps3 (or any DLNA device) in the correct track order. This is a huge problem and limitation of the dns-323. I am considering returning mine (I bought it last week) because of this.

This is a well documented problem in various online forums. Doesn't anybody test this stuff?

All my mp3's are numbered "01-<track name>.mp3" and the dns-323 somehow cuts out the "01-" and displays only the track name which would be great if it played in the correct order and not alphabetically.

I beg you, please fix this....it's ridiculous.

Sounds like it reads the ID tags and not the names.  Put the track number as part of the name. :)

As per my post, the track number is part of the name and it still doesn't work. It's already been well established that this machine ignores id tags. If it read id tags, it wouldn't be a problem.

Upnp Server - PS3 does not show folders with MKV files in them when shared directly with PS3.  I can see folders with mkv files in them if I share the dns-323 drives through PS3 server.

That's not a general issue, my fan works properly.  I did notice that you have to pick the Auto low/high setting, for some reason the Auto off/low/high setting does not work as expected.  However, the fan running at low speed is inaudible even right next to the unit.

What ABI will be used in new firmware: new ARM EABI or legacy ABI? In one post was asking for this feature, but it seems, there was no reply on it.
EABI is better, because, at least, we can do debian chroot with new packages :)
Legacy ARM ABI will not be supported anymore in debian.

[Feature Enhancements]
Auto-update external IP report in passive mode

Threads about this:

On the DNS-323's ftp panel settings;

PLEASE ADD A FUNCTION SO THE DNS CAN AUTO-UPDATE THE EXTERNAL IP REPORT ITSELF.

For us passive mode users, this is a need! If I'm at work or out of the city and need to log into my ftp but my ISP changes my IP during the day (since it's not static), then I won't be able to access it (I will be able to connect to server but it will reject me as the report IP will be false). The hole point of FTP is being able to access it from outside the network at all time, making it impossible to update manualy the IP if we aren't inside the network. This function would make the DNS totaly independant and reliable in passive mode.

Since I have alot of people that require constant access to my DNS for professionnal use, if my external IP changes while I'm not at home then they won't be able to access it for hours until I get back and type in my new external IP myself.

I hope you understand what I'm trying to explain, this has nothing to do with DynDNS!  :-X

As fordem explained so well, here is the more technical description of the problem and reason why this is function so important;
When passive ftp is being used, the ftp server will tell the ftp client to make a data connection and it will specify an ip address and a port on which the connection is to be made - and if the ftp server is not configured correctly it will specify it's private ip address, which is what you are experiencing here..

It would be great if we could have an option to auto-fetch the external IP as the user wants to, like every ½h, 1h, daily or weekly.

EDIT: This problem was solved by setting the DIR-655 router TCP endpoint to address restricted. But this function would still be usefull I guess.

[Feature Enhancements]
FTP montly bandwith upload and download limit
Add a feature of monthly bandwith upload and download limit per account would be good to gain control over the ftp activities. I think it might be better than receiving your bill at the end of the month with a bad surprise.

FTP User and Group support with per User Virtual Directories
So we can create virtual directories for groups or accounts with differant types of access to folders at differant locations on the DNS's hard drives. It's kind of hard to share 1 specific folder for 2 distinct users or groupes.

FTP Auto-ban IP anti-flood
Always in the optics of getting better protection, there could be a system that, after so many attemps (10...) with bad password/login in x time (example 1min) then your IP is banned from the DNS for (30min/60min/always). Perhaps this would also be good against brute force. And have a pannel to control these IP's to either keep them on that block list or unblock them (ex a friend tried too many times and just forgot his pwd).

FTP Active Logs
A simple log that could be seen directly from the GUI for direct consultation.

Dynamic DNS Timeout
Simply to be able to customize the delay between the dynamic DNS's update so your IP is always accurate.

They don't have to be on the next firmware, a simple add-on application pack injected by the pannel "ADD-ONS" would be an alternative.

But then, with these features I guess that would make the DNS-323...perfect?  :-X

I like the idea of the anti-hammering login restriction, that's one reason I've been reluctant to allow the DNS-323 FTP to be exposed publically.

Remember you bought a "simple" NAS with some additional features.
There are already NAS with these features i.e. Synology or QNAP.
Just have a look at these and their price.
I'm using the Synology DS series for my FTP servers.

You got what you paid for  ;D

But to be honest, the DNS-323 is a good and reliable NAS for its money.

Just because it's not an expensive NAS, there's no reason it can't have a couple of features.

I agree.

The ftp server is already in it; Why not make it better with 2-3 extra features? Most freeware ftp servers offer these, I guess they have become standard functions.

Some addons mentionned are security related and cannot be neglected (ex: Anti-hammering, Logs...). Others, just offer more flexibilaty such as virtual folders, since two accounts cannot "share" the same folder.

I think for alot of us, we took the DNS because we trust D-Link (I only buy D-Link stuff for my network) and bought this DNS mainly because of the price but more even because of the ftp. If there wouldn't be an ftp server integrated, then I wouldn't have bought it.

Somebody probably suggested this.

Is there any reason to have the web configuration/apps pages broken into two logins? If not, I think it should ALL be under one login.  Password is the same. I find it difficult to manage the BT app and then move to the config page in order to shut down the app.

The reason I shut off the app is: NAS wont sleep with it running.

Does anyone even monitor these suggestions?

Thanks All

Been waiting for 1.08 to be able to play my Panasonic camera's AVCHD Lite footage on my PS3 without having to rename my .MTS files.

I decided to upgrade from 1.07 to 1.08b8 as the feature list now included support for .M2TS files, however I still have to rename my .MTS files for the UPnP server to "see" them and stream to the PS3.

I also noticed that after the 1.08b8 update the fan was on constantly even though the setting was auto, I had to change the setting to something else then back to auto to resolve that. Also the new FTP SSL/TLS feature didn't work until I ticked the checkbox to only allow SSL/TLS then untick it again. I guess this is why they recommend resetting to defaults after a firmware update.

No other problems so far, but if you could just look into the .MTS file extension...thanks!

Have you tried resetting the unit to defaults yet to see if .MTS was working? Make sure you also hit the refresh button to rescan your folders.

Not reset to defaults yet.

I have refreshed using the button but still does not show the .MTS files.

I have renamed the .MTS files to .M2TS and they are now visible and work perfectly.

Are you confident that resetting to defaults will make .MTS files appear? Does your 1.08 unit show them?

Cheers

Hi

I installed version 1.08 beta and it runs smoothly, at least if I compare it to the previous official version in respect to access and performance.  ;D
Looking to the case and LED lights themselves it strucks me that even if no computer in the network is active (all are switched off) and only the router (D-link 825), modem ( Zyxel ADSL modem) and the NAS are active the lights of the NAS (especial the right handed disk light) is flashing if it is working very hard.
The NAS should be configured as going to sleep mode if no network activity is ongoing. It seems not to be the case. ???
Is this a bug ?
Anybody else observing this 'ghost' activity ?

Thanks for your feedback.

Not sure if this was mentioned before but fix up the FTP Access List

Simple setup: folder B is in Folder A

Under the network access tab, I am able to Give User_A Read/Write access to Folder A and only Read access to folder B.

In the FTP Server tab, I am not able to achieve this. You can only have 1 ftp access list for User_A. the only way to achieve this (the read/write access portion of this) is to have 2 separate user accounts and give both of them the appropriate access for either Folder A or Folder B. Or give User_A Read/Write Access to Folder A and give anonymous access Read Access.

Both of the options don’t cut it. Allow us to create nice and how ever complicated access lists we want.  For instance, in my setup, I don’t want to give anonymous access, I only want ftp access via 1 simple login user name and define the appropriate access to each and every folder.

Also, another very useful addition which would compliment this very nicely would be a third option from the 2 (Read and Read/Write access), give a third option for Delete Access.

Just because I give a user read/write access, doesn’t mean I also want them to be able to delete the files/folders.

Essentially, allow complex user access, like you can define in either Windows and/or Linux.

Would just like to suggest a feature that would drastically improve the usefulness of the UPNP server.

1- Ability to specify different folders for different media, e.g. select a folder for music, a folder for photos and a photo for video instead of a root folder for all.

2- Ability to view refreshed index file "locally" through the administration section.

Thanks ;)

I am running 1.07. Using UPNP, Genre is only showing correctly with ID3V1 tags. If ID3V2 then it shows as other. Is this being fixed in 1.08?

Also, having different directories for different media files in the UPNP server would be a great thing to have.

Thanks

When I create an account named "ftp" then the account is created successfully, but it does not show up in the list of accounts. If I try to create the account a second again I get error "account already exists". Perhaps the firmware should PREVENT users from creating any accounts named "ftp".

Do I need to re-load Factory Defaults in order to erase this "hidden" account?

Unless this is quite different, it's pretty standard to restrict account names that clash with system resource names.  Try creating a folder names CON or PRN with Windows, for instance.

Daylight saving dates are checked for consistency but only in a Northern hemisphere centric fashion. So here in the southern hemisphere putting in the 3rd of October as the starting date and the 3rd of April as a finishing date gives an error and the end result is I cannot set daylight saving.

And this is why I reported it as a bug. The firmware should not allow creation of a user accounts named "ftp", because it is impossible to delete the account after is has been created. The firmware already blocks the account names "root" and "admin", but it does not yet block the account "ftp".

Have you tried resetting the unit to defaults yet to see if .MTS was working? Make sure you also hit the refresh button to rescan your folders.

I have reset to defaults using the web interface and button on back, but still .MTS files do not show.

I have also updated to 1.08b09 which is available on the UK support site, reset to defaults again, no change.

If the .MTS files are renamed to anything else for example .MP4 or .M2TS they appear and play fine.

First off, did you reset to factory defaults and reconfigure after changing the firmware?  If not, do that first.

If that still doesn't do it, try this.

Turn off power management, save the results and restart the NAS.

Next, set it to Auto (low/high) save the results and restart the NAS.

See if that doesn't solve the problem.

Enhancement request: Email alerts don't work with some SMTP servers like Yahoo.com or Terra.es which require plain authentication. By default, DNS-323 doesn't use "plain" option and it is not possible to setup it without "hacking" around in the Linux directly. Specific details here: http://forum.dsmg600.info/viewtopic.php?id=3563

My enhancement request is to add in the Web UI another combo asking for the specific authentication method: ‘plain’, ‘cram-md5’, ‘digest-md5’, ‘gssapi’, ‘external’, ‘login’, or ‘ntlm’.

Cheers for the reply, yes I reset to factory defaults after changing firmware then formatted then configured.

Have tried your suggestion, although I had no problem with the fan (unless I change the HDD hibernation to less than 1 hour, then for some reason it stays on high constantly!) the problem I have is the HDDs don't stop. I'm sure I had this issue a number of firmwares ago but it went away somehow...

I have since reset to defaults again and the power saving works, the HDDs hibernated after about 30 minutes - even though the default setting is 5 minutes. Changing the setting to my preferred 1 hour stops hibernation all together :(

I'm using 1.08b09 from the UK support site and A1 hardware.

I think I've managed it now by using the reset button on the back of the unit. I notice that setting the NTP server to any valid NTP server produces a message which says it can't connect to the server - but it actually does because the time is updated.

I agree 1.08b08 worked better in my experience when changing settings.

Dlink don't usually publish beta firmwares on their product support download page. No stickies about the new firmware, nothing on "Latest technical alerts". No replies on here. This morning it came up by itself without reloading the settings. I did read about putting back defaults and dit try that. First time it was not succesfull, but now it looks ok. Keep fingers crossed.

@gunrunnerjohn: Yes beta, so what? First make a good, checked back up before using it. The only things to be lost then is time. And this is the betacode section right?

If nobody tests beta (and I am a small private programmer myself) no bugs are ever gonna be found and repaired. The same applies when people do test but don't report them ;)

Since when do dlink release beta firmware on their official support download page? Unless you look at the end of the filename nothing else indicates it's beta.

This page lists it just like the others... http://www.dlink.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c=TechSupport_C&childpagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLTechProduct&cid=1197319419183&p=1197318962293&packedargs=OuickLinksParentID%3D1197319419183%26locale%3D1195806691854%26packedargs%3Df9ffeaf4e83ab6d0166b8cc93b23ebbc3d83540f46ceb58f26706558f9479c4ec3df1411a95e2d40b8161bf516969212f4b253493c501653965d4b39148b4c34&pagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLWrapper

I was a bit surprised to see it on the standard download page, but the file name in the archive gives it away.  The release notes also mention beta.

It's interesting that 1.07b1 is represented as a beta in the title, but the 1.08b9 doesn't say beta on the page. ;)

They must run a loose ship over there in the UK. :D

I agree with you. Beta in the filename should be enough to warn for possible problems.

And they did add a changelist to the zip-file  ;D which also tells it's beta.

All download support pages ive ever seen clearly segregate beta from release and labour the point to prevent joe public who doesn't know what beta is from running in to problems. Nothing says the word beta until you download it. I'm not going to list a page of examples and I won't keep on saying it- it's not obvious enough.

What happened to the sharing and security - I have a mac and it all worked before going to 1.08.  My existing shares seem to work, except I had a Time Machine backup going to one share, and that now asks for authentication when I try and connect using Time Machine.  I can connect normally to the share - so that would suggest perhaps the smb or sharing method has changed?

SMB has appeared as a share type - strangely, as it's not like there is an option to have any other type.

The users/groups option never worked for me using a mac anyway, now it seems to work, but I can't work out how and can no longer connect properly.  I tried using 'connect as' and I can't get any credentials working - I've tried server\username etc - no go.

Frustrating.  Might have to go back to 1.07, which is a shame as there look to be some nice new tweaks to 1.08.

I'm not sure that's the case with the latest UK firmware.

I have password protected shares and anonymous shares coexisting without any problems. Out of interest, can you boot a client on your network with a Ubuntu live CD and see whether it behaves the same when you browse the shares on the DNS-323.

Make sure you reset to defaults using the button on the back if you decide to try it, I had numerous problems until I did that. I may have also done it more than once for good measure! Since then it has been perfect for me anyway - apart from having to rename .MTS files to see them on my PS3, but I can live with that for now.

DNS-323  Samba bug with 1.08 b08/b09

I have “My files”, “My Pictures”, “My Videos”, “Contacts”, and “Favorites”  all located on a D-Link samba share. In order that the share works as expected in a Windows 7 environment, and in particular so that Desktop.ini files work but don’t show, I have am running samba with the following common options;

create mask = 0777
force create mode = 0000
directory mask = 0777
force directory mode 0777

and the following options on the share;

map archive = yes
map system = yes
map hidden = yes

I have had problems saving word files that are already on the share, which sounds like the bug described in the release notes for 1.08b07. So I attempted to upgrade from my current version (1.08b05) to the beta 1.08b09 from the UK D-Link site.

This has caused serious problems. It appears that the Win7/Samba combination changes file attributes when directories are scanned by Windows 7. For instance, if I open Internet Explorer 8 and look at my “Favorites” then I briefly see the links but almost immediately Windows does some sort of scan and they all disappear. A subsequent check shows that the hidden bit has been set (one of the execute bits on the Unix side) so the link no-longer shows. As soon as I switch to another sub-folder of favorites, they also disappear. I can’t remember if it was just the “hidden” attribute or if the “system”  and "archive" attributes are also affected.

In any case, I reset the firmware to 1.08b05 and reset all the file attributes to 766 (or 777 for Desktop.ini, directories  etc). I subsequently found 1.08b08 in this forum so tried that also – with the exact same result. I don’t know where 1.08b07 is but suspect the bug was introduced while trying to fix the word/excel issue.

I’m now back on 1.08b05 and consider that the above bug is serious enough that I couldn’t use those later releases so am still stuck with the Word saving problem. Does anyone know what is actually going on here? Does it happen with other Windows versions?

David

not sure if this has been asked or not, but is there a way or a way that you can allow us to see who is connected via ftp? Maybe it's just me, but I can't find the current users connected in the logs or otherwise. This would be a great feature (if not already added) and also, is there a way to throttle bandwidth without the user losing connection? And, can you add a feature to throttle only certain users?

Thanks

Here's another bug, and sorry if it's been repeated by someone else, in a different way.

I have both bays filled. I have one drive set as a public drive, leaving the access as Any. The other drive, I set as personal and have it locked by username and password. In the Network Access page, I have disabled the Any option for the second drive completely.

When another user tries to connect to the NAS, even when mapped just for the open volume, it prompts for a username and password.

Under 1.06, it would only prompt if they tried to access Volume_2. Under the latest 1.08 Beta, it prompts as soon as the mapping hits the \\NAS\ level. Anything below that requires authentication, even if it's only trying to go to the public Volume_1 share.

Both computers in question are using Windows 7 RTM.

This is not a polite behavior in p2p networks... Although, there is already a configuration option for such need.

I read some topics about RAID configuration got lost after the upgrade and even data got lost when restoring this configuration. Is this still the case, or is this upgrade as safe as previous ones?

Thanks,
Anton

Well, I went from 1.07 to 1.08, and my RAID-1 data was fine.  This is only a sample of one, but it worked for me. :)

FW v1.0.8, Bit Torrent Package v1.0.0

Change in behaviour. If adding a torrent from file, the default behaviour used to be that a manual start of the download was required. It now starts automatically.

Adding a torrent via URI still requires a manual start.

The behaviour should be consistent, I'd like it to be automatic start when adding a torrent via either method.

Suggestion for improvement:

Running the setup wizard may be useful the first time the system is configured. After that, it is less useful. It would be nice to change the default page for the Admin Console to something other than the wizard once the unit is configured, such as the status screen. An option to run the wizard would still be nice, but is not a particularly useful default.

Bug?

Setting the Tools -> System -> Config Inactivity Timer does not seem to work assuming it does what I think it does. If it is supposed to control the amount of time you can sit idle in the Admin configuration page before having to log in again, then I don't think it works. I set mine to 999 minutes, but I still have to log in every few minutes if the console sits idle.

Missing Help Info:

Tools -> Power Management -> Power Recovery Settings

The "Helpful Hints" talks about hibernation and fan control but does not say what Power Recovery Settings are for. I assume this is used in the even of restoration of power after a power failure. Enabled would mean the device powers up, disabled means the unit must be manually powered on.

Enhancement request:

The new status page shows lots of great information such as Rx/Tx, temperature, uptime etc. It would be great if the fan speed (or at least on/off) was indicated on this page. Many use the device remotely and have no idea if the fan is running or not. This is conjunction with the temperature can be important information.

Similarly, knowing if the HDD's are in hibernation or not would be extremely useful.

[Feature Enhancements]
FTP montly bandwith upload and download limit
Add a feature of monthly bandwith upload and download limit per account would be good to gain control over the ftp activities. I think it might avoid receiving your bill at the end of the month with a bad surprise.

FTP User and Group support with per User Virtual Directories
So we can create virtual directories for groups or accounts with differant types of access to folders at differant locations on the DNS's hard drives. It would be nice to be able to share 1 specific folder for 2 distinct users or groups.

FTP Anti-flood Auto-ban IP (Anti-hammering)
Always in the optics of getting better protection, there could be a system that, after so many attemps (say 10...) with bad password/login in x time (example 1min) then your IP is banned from the DNS for (1hour/1week/always). Perhaps this would also be good against brute force or simply people trying to get in. And have a pannel to control these IP's to either keep them on that block list or unblock them (ex a friend tried too many times and just forgot his pwd).

But then, with these features I guess that would make the DNS-323...perfect?  :-X

In addition to these suggestions I made a while ago...

Automatic AES-128 folder/disk encryption
Just another feature to get more protection for our private data, specialy if the DNS has a door open such as an FTP server and you have backups/files such as your bills or other personnal documents. More and more NAS's are adding this feature, I think it's just normal these days.

Well, I guess I'll sit and wait for the next firmwares. Heh..

PS: Are there any of these features on the list for the next firmware already?
