Windows 8.1 phone won't connect to wireless network
« on: May 17, 2014, 09:25:04 AM »

I upgraded my Windows 8 phone to the 8.1 Preview for Developers. Prior to the upgrade I had been able to connect to my home wireless network without a problem. I FINALLY found the solution - it seems, like the Galaxy 4, you need to change the Cipher type to TKIP and AES. Once I did that, I'm connected again!

I hope this helps someone.

When I first made the cipher change, my phone connected and I thought the problem was solved. Unfortunately I noticed a day later that the phone was no longer on my wireless network. I rebooted the router, and it was able to connect again. After another day, it was the same situation that a router reboot solved. Today in frustration I have tried using WPA only. Hopefully this will work. I don't know what else to try.

This phone, before the 8.1 upgrade, had no problem with the wireless network. I also have an old MacBook that wouldn't connect via wifi either until I changed the cipher type.

I don't understand much about this stuff but something different is going on with this router - I used to be able to connect the MacBook with a DIR-655 that I had before and the problem didn't start until I upgraded to the 857 (I connected with Ethernet to get it on my network so it wasn't urgent that I problem solve). Every other wireless device (iPad, iPhone, HP notebook, KindleHD) connects no matter what changes I make  (my Kindle Paperwhite needed a wireless network reset today when I made the WPA only change, but it connected.)

Since the Galaxy4 phones are apparently having the problem too, is there any advice or solution available? I'm determined to figure this out (I can't connect my phone with ethernet!)

Thanks, Kathy

  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.

Thank you SO much for all your helpful suggestions! I'll give each a try next week. BTW, I'm using firmware 1.04 which I think is the latest.

I tried the auto WiFi setup yesterday (as opposed to manual setup) and, as of now, my phone is still connected. Since it normally gets about two days before it drops, it's premature to declare victory.

Since my phone has the developer Windows 8.1 release, it may be that the problem is with the new OS. Since all my other devices (except the old MacBook) have no problem, I'm suspicious of my hardware (which worked fine before the upgrade.)

This is my first experience with D-Link router WiFi issues. Like most things I took a consistent stable connection for granted. When you think about it, it's amazing that so many devices of different types routinely work flawlessly - I've put this on my list of things to remember to appreciate!

Thank you for your help - I'll let you know what I discover.

Ya, if the phone was working before the OS update and now it's not after, that would be a point of suspect...
Hope it keeps working. Keep us posted.

I have a Nokia Lumia 635 and it works perfectly with mine but I am running the QoS modded firmware.  I don't think that would actually make a difference though as I don't believe anything to do with the WiFi has been changed.  My phone has the T-Mobile WiFi Calling app for Windows Phone 8.1 in it which works flawlessly on this router for me whether I am talking on it or using WiFi instead of data for browsing and downloading.
