300Mbps wireless speed limit of approx. 9Mb/s???
« on: November 24, 2011, 11:36:46 AM »

Hi,

My problem: The bandwidth seems to be limited to approximately 9Mb/s over the wireless network connected at 300 Mbps connect  ???  :(

3 TESTS
I have a server connected to the DIR-655 at 1Gbps LAN and done the three following tests (all 3 tests downloading +1Gb file(s) from the server):

1) Connecting laptop#1 via 1Gbps LAN I achieve approximately 55Mb/s download speed. This test to show the server/hardware including the router is capable to transferring much faster than 9Mb/s.

2) When downloading to a single laptop (laptop#1) over the wireless network I achieve approximately 9Mb/s (300Mbps connection)

3) When downloading to two laptops (laptop #1 & #2) the total speed is still 9Mb/s but shared between the two laptops (running at 300 Mbps & 150Mbps connections)

Is 9 Mb/s the (hardware?) limit over the wireless network?

Thanks in advance,
Per

PS: The DIR-655 hardware/firmware versions are: A4/1.31EU

Thats about right then. Wireless is different and max xfer speeds i've seen on avg is about 10Mb.

I had hoped that I was not right, but I had made an error in the configuration :(. So your comment raises some additional questions:

1) But 300Mbps approximately equals 30Mb/s. Where is the 20Mb/s "lost"? Is it a limitation in the backbone of the router? Or how should this be explained?

2) What is then "earned" by having the laptop connected at 300Mbps compared to any speed above 100Mbps?

3) Where in the technical specifications is it stated that the router is only capapble of transfering 10Mb/s over the air? (so I avoid this limit when buying a new router)

You have to understand that 54, 100 and 300 are connections speeds that are different from actual xfer speeds. These are actual connection speeds between the device and the router. There are many variables that dictate how wireless performs and is used. This is the nature of the beast and is the wireless standard. Even on a wired LAN connection at Gb connection speeds, we never see anywhere near or close to connection speeds. This as been the standard with OEMS since the beginning of time.

Some reading.
http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireless/f/wirelessspeed.htm

http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireless80211/a/aa80211standard.htm
These are but a few articles that explain some things about wireless and I'm sure there are others that go into detail more.

This nature of the beast is the wireless standard for every wireless router Mfr. Some Mfrs may or maynot handle better then others. However the speeds are average and generally about the same for all wireless routers.

I just did a 1Gb file xfer from my MacBook Pro thru a DGL-4500 set up as a AP setup for 5Ghz Single mode N connecting at 270Mb and was only seeing about 8Mbs sending the file to a wired server connected via Gb. Just the nature of wireless. I do agree that wireless should be much faster. Again there are many variables in dealing with wireless. Devices on each end, set up configurations, drivers and external interferences as well that contribute to performance.

@Alien: You wrote "300MBit is the connection speed. the max speed is then 300/8=37,5 MB/s".
Due to overhead I would assume the correct number is more close to 300/100=30MB/s, that's why I wrote "Where is the 20Mb/s 'lost'?" (loss = theoretical max speed minus experienced speed = 30MB/s-10MB/s = 20MB/s) ... From FurryNutz answers, I assume we can conclude the wireless protocols are extremely inefficient ... Initially I had hoped, I just had a poor configuration of my network card or router
